Viaggio di nozze in cina: 29 maggio, Datong/Honeymoon in China: 29th of May, Datong

On the morning of the 29th of May the taxi driver we met the night before comes to pick us at the hotel. After a few meters, he stops and invites two Chinese girls to get into the car. The girls came with us to the temple, but even though they spoke English, we did not have the courage to ask if they were relative of the drivers or tourists like us. In any case, the price set for the trip didn't drop and I suspect that the girls paid too (but less).
The trip was an adventure: the taxi driver had a fake seatbelt and a sleazy guide. When he passed two lorries on a curve on the wrong side of the road, I thought we'd be dead. Luckily we arrived and came back alive and safely.
On the other hand we made a very long queue to enter the park (the ticket for the park costs 100 CNY and that for Temple 25 CNY) and a THREE HOURS queue to arrive to the temple because there was a disproportionate amount of tourists, mostly Chinese.

The temple was built in the 6th century. It seems a delicate construction, but undergoes continuous restorations, of which the last one was really recent.
The bizarre location at 80 meters on Mount Heng's flank was to prevent floods and to achieve a better isolation for the monks.
The temple's inner rooms are pretty, but not impressive because of the small size. The real view is the combination of Buddhist architecture and height.

Unfortunately, the crowd does not allow us to stay for a long time, but it is still an unforgettable visit (especially on the last floor which had a rather low railing). Fortunately, there is a suggested way so almost no people walk in opposite directions. For people who suffer a bit of dizziness like the Hairy Half, it is still a feasible visit.
The park is modern, not ugly, but not so fascinating, with a cave with an artificial waterfall and an artificial riverbed with a bridge.

Intanto, ovviamente, inizia a piovere.

Our reckless taxi driver brings us back to Datong, trying all the time to convince us to make other trips with him. Since within two days we are going tho leave and that the caves we want to visit tomorrow are best reached by bus, we decline.
Given the tremendous queque we did at the temple, we arrive in the early afternoon. We do a little shopping at a nearby supermarket, eat something and decide to explore the city. Meanwhile, of course, it begins to rain. The rainy season started.
Our first impression of Datong is not positive. All around there are work is in progress, deserted and ruined houses, ruined roads, electric wires hanging in the air. The area around the station and our hotel is one of the worst we see. We meet many fruit and vegetable stalls and we see for the first time a very big, round and thorny fruit that smells like rotten fruits, the durian.

Going to the old town, we arrive at an area where the renovation works are already over. There are modern areas with skyscrapers, wide roads and even an amusement park with a ferris wheel.

I'm fascinated by the propaganda signs that seem to focus on the army, with heroic sweaty soldiers waving weapons with red flags in the background.

I insist on finding a noodles restaurant in Yingze Jie suggested by Lonley Planet. We find a lot of fish stores that discharge smelly liquids on the sidewalks, but not the reported restaurant (also because the Chinese name is not indicated). We stop at the end of the street at Prince Duan Rice Noodles, a small, modern, but a bit aseptic and spartan place, similar to a fast food. There is no English menu and the waitress speaks only Chinese, but we still manage choose from the photos on the menu. I take a noodles soup with a steak, mushrooms and vegetables, my husband chooses another soup with a set of ingredients that the waitress add at the table: two yolks, ham, mushrooms, vegetables and two servings of noodles (actually he didn't knowhe was taking this much).
Noodles are one of the specialties of the Shanxi region and these are great. The portions are abundant, we struggle to finish everything. We pay a total of 62 CNY, really cheap.

Finally we arrive at the old town, almost completely reconstructed destroying the old historical center and moving the inhabitants, methods thatunfortunately  in China are widespread. The works are far from finished, they are even rebuilding a Ming palace that had completely disappeared. Although they are not original, the walls, with many towers and a ditch, are really impressive, especially with night lighting. We enter and take a quick walk, focusing on the main pedestrian street. I find an all for 2 CNY shop still open and I buy a necklace, music headphones and some little presents.
The lighting is really low, but we see a huge square surrounded by wooden buildings, two temples, some towers... we'll come back tomorrow to see everything well.

@Simona: grazie ^^
