Like every year, I went to Artigiano in Fiera, the fair dedicated to craftmanship from around the world, held every year in Milan from the first to the second weekend of December.

After so many years, the impression is to see every time the same things, but they are so many and so beautiful that there is always something to wonder about, such as cardboard lego and wooden coffee pots, or beautiful umbrellas with bizarre handles.

As always, one of the attractions of the Fair is the food, both the tastes at the stands, and the foreign dishes difficult to find otherwise. As always I took the delicious French croque baguette (with chevre and spicy salami) and this year I also tried the Spanish patatas bravas, unfortunately not up to those eaten in Spain (but at Lidl I found the sauce to make them at home...).

We bought many Christmas gifts, especially food, but also a lot of food for us: the usual Sardinian pane carasau, culurgiones and bottarga, Sicilian pistachio pesto and Calabrian nduja, but also very good apple cider with elderberry and mint, Sicilian oregano, Knödel handmade on the spot with speck and cheese (those bought in the Europe section) and delicious coconut sweets.

This year, for the fair, we hosted some friends from Rome who brought us the real porchetta of Ariccia (Delicious!!! I will never eat it again in the north) and coppiette, strips of spicy dry meat, from Ariccia too. In short, we ate all the weekend long.

This year as well I couldn't resist the charm of the Indian stands, where this time I did not limit myself to the "all for 1€" baskets. I bought a statement electric blue hair decoration, all sequins and big stones and a tubular necklace with golden beads, each one for 1€, but I also bought 8€ of electric blue and orange tassels to make other earrings of this type and golden earrings with a particular hook for 5€.

Spero funzioni.

Since from about a month I have a stiff neck that comes and goes, my Hairy Half, as an early Christmas gift bought me for 20€ a memory foam pillow made with aloe which is actually very very comfortable. I hope it works.

Viaggio di nozze in cina: 4 giugno, Xi'an/Honeymoon in China: 4th of June, Xi'an

Today is the big day: we go to see the terracotta army!
This cultural heritage masterpiece was discovered by chance in 1974 by some peasants who, digging a well near the site of the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first Chinese emperor, found an underground chamber with thousands of terracotta soldiers and horses in battle formation.
The first problem is to get there, as the museum is out of town. We know there are tourist buses departing from the train station, so we go there with a city bus. Once we get off we start looking around. The bus 915 stops in front of us even if we are not at the stop and the driver makes frantic gestures for us to get on. We blindly decide to obey. Fortunately it is the right bus (one way 16th CNY). Evidently seeing two foreigners looking around, the driver has assumed our destination.
The bus leaves us a quarter of an hour of walk away from the site, and we have to do it under a heavy rain. We go to buy the ticket (150 CNY) and enter the complex, which is very big, with gardens.
The first building we enter is the museum, which houses not particularly interesting exhibitions about the history of the site, but also two bronze scale chariots, each with four horses, one with a parasol and a larger one with openable doors.
It is the first impact with these invaluable and, above all, beautiful artworks.

It is time to see the main attraction, the terracotta army, which is divided into three pavilions. We begin by chance from the second, which contains about 1300 warriors, but above all some statues of soldiers of different rank and some weapons in showcases, to allow the tourists to admire them closely. They are amazing. What they see is true, they all have different faces and details, but reality is superior to the imagination: some still have traces of color (they should have been so realistic, all painted!), the hairstyles are really refined and even the sole of the shoes is full of details.
We continue with the third pavilion, the smallest, that hosts what is believed to have been the headquarters of the army, due to the high number of statues of officers, and a room probably used for sacrifices (it seems that once on the tombs of the Chinese emperors were made human sacrifices, so one of the hypotheses about the army is that it was the substitute for a sacrifice).
We finish the visit with the first pavilion that is the largest, the most famous, and consequently the most crowded. Toget to the front, from which there is the most beautiful view, we have to fight, but it requires some time anyway. It contains about 6,000 warriors (of which only one third is on display). The mass is really impressive.

We get back to Xi'an at late lunch time and stop to eat in a very austere restaurant opposite the Shaanxi History Museum.
I take noodles with chili pepper and cucumber that are definitely not up to those of Pingyao. The Hairy Half chooses a strange flat sandwich that turns out to be nothing but the famous rúu jià mó, the so-called Chinese hamburger, a typical street food of the region.
It is a baked flat bread, stuffed with meat cooked with more than twenty spices for a very long time. The meat is usually pork, but in this case it is mutton, as is often the case in Xi'an because of the Muslim community. It's so good that we order another one to divide.

We spend the afternoon visiting the Shaanxi History Museum. The entry is free, but limited to 4000 tickets per day (2500 given in the morning from 8.30 am and other 1500 in the afternoon from 1:30 pm) so we end up quequing a bit.
The museum is wonderful, full of beautiful artifacts divided into rooms according to the era, telling the history of the region from prehistory to the Qing dynasty in chronological order. On the ground floor there are also four original statues of terracotta warriors.

There is also a section dedicated to very rare Tang wall paintings (618-907 AD), depicting court life scenes. However, the entrance is very expensive (300 CNY) and is already late, so we end it not seeing it.

We get off the bus near the bell tower and the drum tower, which, with the night lighting, are particularly beautiful.
Since we are tired and the area is full of malls, we enter a couple of them looking for a place to eat. I finally see on sale the cute upholstery backpacks with teddy bears I've seen rocked by a lot of guys and girls, but the prices are exorbitant. I give up.
Today we don't want to eat Chinese cuisine, we go to a Korean restaurant. The Half Hairy eats rice with curry and cheese, I choose eel rolls, both good. We also take a mango juice and a delicious tea with caramelized honey grapefruit skins.

On the way back, I finally satisfy my desire for shopping when we meet Miniso, a Japanese chain that sells a bit of everything at very low prices. While staying in Xi'an I go to various branches and buy: a rectangular fashionable backpack, a eye mask that can be put in the freezer, a pink usb cable, three hair scrunchies with bows, a frog airplane pillow with a matching eyemask and a Moomin wallet (as well as a scary quantity of gifts) spending very little. I am really satisfied.

Pineapples, chamomile and mint

Orecchini/Earrings: fatti io/selfmade
Ape/Bee: Hobby Show (2€)
Cardigan: fatto io/selfmade
Maglietta/Tee Blumarine, mercatino delle pulci/Blumarine, thrift market (5€)
Gonna/SkirtPrimark (4£ on sale)
Calzamaglie/Tightsmercato di via Ampere, Milano/Ampere Street open air market, Milan (0,5)
Scarpe/Shoes: Tally Weijl (12,95€ on sale)

The other day I tried to put a few leaves of fresh mint in my chamomile and I liked the result a lot!
Did you knew that, if left to infuse too long, chamomile has exactly the opposite effect to the relaxing  onethat is traditionally associated with it? I discovered it only recently, but suddenly those nights spent with wide eyes after drinking an extra strong chamomile had a lot more sense.

Da federa a maglietta/From pillowcase to t-shirt

Do you remember the pillow that I bought at Valvassori Peroni street market for 1.30 € attracted by the whales pattern? Well, as I planned, I turned it into a T-shirt.

I used a simple technique, copying the silhouette of a shirt that fitted me well and bending the cut in two in order to have a symmetrical result.
In theory the sleeves should be cut separately to get a better result, but I didn't care about it and the t-shirt come out well.

Then I made the hems and, since it was a bit short (to keep the pattern straight I had to use the pillowcase on the long side) I added a strip of light blue lace on the bottom. I like the result a lot.
A good way to turn pillowcases with a print that look good even vertically into tops is this.

I went for a walk to the market of Valvassori Peroni street in Milan.
In a used clothing stall I miraculously found a T-shirt of the collection made by the blogger and illustrator Fifi Lapin for Pimkie. At the time I had not bought anything because it was all so expensive. For example, this shirt was sold for 22.90€! Unfortunately it was stained, and not knowing if the stains would come clean, but wanting it the same and I asked for a discount and I paid it 2€. But the karma punished me: the stains came clean, in return something bleeded in my washing machine and it became pink, sigh!

At another used clothing stall I bought a pair of tweed shorts for 1 €. They had no buttons, but I took it as an opportunity to use the cute buttons I have aside.

I went a little crazy and bought for 1.30 € a pillowcase attracted by the beautiful whales print with the aim of turning it into a t-shirt.

Even worse madness, I bought a pair of burgundy velvet leggings for 1.50 €, which probably will make me look podgy. I was fooled by my penchant for velvet and by having seen a very similar pair on the site of H&M (available in purple or black) on sale for 10€.

I also found a book by Kinsella, "The undomestic goddess", for 5€, I hope I'll like it!

Cuscino patchwork/Patchwork pillow

I started my sewing class, it was great!!!
I was expecting sweet slightly plump housewives like the tv series'ones, and instead 2 of 3 were women with a sort of harsh humor and the owner was also very thin. But there was still a homely feeling!
The downside is that you pay for the material, and it's quite expensive. But doing some calculation this cost is balanced with the the cost of the lessons that is incredibly cheap (about 2 euro per hour), so the class still costs very little and they let you take home the scraps, which makes me very happy because their fabrics have wonderful patterns.
But what I liked the most was the lesson. For my first 3 hours I chose patchwork. Being my first time, after making me choose the fabrics, the teacher made me realize the simple scheme you see above. She taught me to measure parts with the set square and cut with the wheel (always adding 1.5 cm on each side for the seam -already added in the scheme), then I had to sew them together by machine, first smaller squares and then the larger, ironing them to eliminate the relief of the seams as they grew larger.
They had spectacular sewing machines that cut the thread by pressing a button, that had a thing that put the thread trough the needle and other wonders like this. I discovered that there is a special foot for patchwork. And I learned a few tricks, such as using the foot as a reference for sewing straight, do not sew outside the fabric because the thread can get knotted and if the thread below gives problems you need to re insert the one above. It may seem trivial, but since I'm self-taught for me every teaching is pure gold!
After I finished the pattern I was asked if I wanted to go on to create a blanket or make a pillow. I opted for the pillow so I could have a finished product in one lesson and eventually try something different next time. First I cut four strips of fabric to outline the basic scheme and reach the size of a standard pillow. Then we made the back so that we didn't have to add the zipper.
I am so proud of the result! *W* When I'll have a house of my own, my patchwork cushion will end in the place of honor in the living room!

Mascherina/Eye mask

I have problems sleeping with this heat and the light that filter trough the blinds make it worst, so I decided to make a night mask.

Difficulty: very easy. Basic sewing or sewing machine utilization skills needed.
Materials: thick fabric, lace, sewing material

I chose fleece as fabric because it is soft and i didn't have to hem it. I cut the shape using the example of the extent of my glasses. Those lucky enough to see well can use sunglasses. Then I added a nice elastic after measuring my head so it was not too soft or too tight.

To prevent light to filter I added a layer of the heavier fabric I had around, jeans, I cut a slightly smaller shape because I didn't want it in contact with the skin (it's rough) and I sewed it on the base with a nice sewing machine point (but quite randomly). Then I added eyelashes made with pompom thread to make it nicer.
Of course you can decorate as you wish, but you should never use hard items unless the mask is not purely decorative because they can be annoying or even be dangerous when you sleep.

Fate/Fairies

Ritagli di outfit in qualche modo fateschi raccolti negli anni.

From my fashion scrapbook: fairish outfits.

From an issue of Grazia of some years ago. The first girl inspired me for years. When I cut off this phot it was the period of the pijama-by-day fashion. This is one of the few outfits where this fashion actually does look good. As for me I think the right nightgown can look like a girly dress with no effort. At the time I was also fascinated by the lolita like mini hat and I decided I had to buy one. Now I have 3 and I never use them XD
And I am also in love with the way her lipstick is applied (I copied it a lot) and with the super puffy hairstyles of all the girls (I tried to copy it until I understood I needed a lot of Rita Levi Montalcini like super strong hairspray).

From July's Marieclaire. Photos from the service on Glastonsbury festival. All these women are totally perfect. After seeing them I bought a pair of fairy wings (look at my halloween and carnival outfit).
