Signore delle Ombre/Lord of Shadows (Cassandra Clara)

"Signore delle Ombre" (Lord of Shadows) è un romanzo del 2017 di Cassandra Clare. 

Fa parte dell'universo di The Shadowhunter Chronicles che è composto da romanzi urban fantasy con una forte componente romantica, ambientati in luoghi ed epoche diversi, ma basati sulla stessa premessa, cioè che tutte le leggende sono vere e demoni, licantropi, vampiri, fate e molte altre creature fantastiche si nascondono fra di noi. Per difendere i comuni esseri umani esistono delle persone speciali, gli Shadowhunters, che grazie al loro addestramento, a rune magiche e al loro sangue parzialmente angelico, riescono a vedere e combattere queste creature.

"Signore delle Ombre" è il seguito di "La Signora della Mezzanotte" (che ho recensito qui) e sarà seguito da un terzo libro. La trilogia costituisce la serie "The Dark Artifices", che a sua volta è la quarta serie dell'universo Shadowhunters, dopo "The Infernal Devices" (che ho recensito qui), "The Last Hours" (che deve ancora essere pubblicata) e "The Mortal Instruments" (di cui ho recensito i primi tre libri qui), da cui sono stati tratti anche un film (che ho recensito qui) e una serie tv (che ho recensito qui).

Questa nuova serie è ambientata a Los Angeles 5 anni dopo il sesto e ultimo libro della saga "The Mortal Instruments". La protagonista è Emma Carstairs, che indaga sulla morte dei suoi genitori intanto che il rapporto con Julian Blackthorn, il suo "parabatai", con cui ogni relazione amorosa le è preclusa dalla legge Shadowhunters, diventa sempre più intenso.

In questa secondo romanzo la trama si complica intrecciandosi all'instabile situazione politica in cui tutto il popolo fatato viene vincolato da trattati ingiusti dopo essersi schierato dalla parte sbagliata nell'ultima guerra. A questo si aggiungono le storie di tantissimi personaggi vecchi e nuovi.

Ho fatto davvero fatica a leggere questo secondo libro. Sicuramente la scrittura non è incredibile (e la traduzione è ancora peggio), i personaggi forse sono troppi, alcune situazioni sono davvero ingenue, ma penso che il problema principale del libro sia che trovo insopportabili i protagonisti. La protagonista è una terribile Mary Sue, il protagonista un Marty Stu emo. Invece mi piacciono molto alcuni dei personaggi secondari.

Leggerò anche l'ultimo libro (magari stavolta in inglese che scorre meglio) per completezza e per scoprire il destino dei personaggi che mi stanno simpatici, ma in generale non sono soddisfatta.

"Lord of Shadows" is a 2017 novel by Cassandra Clare.

It is part of the universe of The Shadowhunter Chronicles which is composed of urban fantasy novels with a strong romantic element, set in different places and times, but based on the same premise, that all the legends are true and demons, werewolves, vampires, fairies and many other fantastic creatures lurk among us. To defend the common human beings exist special people, the Shadowhunters, who, thanks to their training, to magic runes and to their partly angelic blood, can see and fight these creatures.

"Lord of the Shadows" is the sequel of "Lady Midnight" (which I reviewed here) and is going to be followed by a third book. This trilogy makes the series "The Dark Artifices", which is the fourth series of the Shadowhunters universe, after "The Infernal Devices" (which I reviewed here), "The Last Hours" (which has yet to be published) and "The Mortal Instruments"  (of which I reviewed the first three books here), which was also adapted into a movie (which I reviewed here) and a TV series (which I reviewed here).

This new series is set in Los Angeles 5 years after the sixth and last book of "The Mortal Instruments". The protagonist is Emma Carstairs, who investigates the death of her parents while her relationship with Julian Blackthorn, her "parabatai", with whom every love affair is precluded by the Shadowhunters law, becomes more and more intense.

In this second novel, the plot becomes complicated intertwining the unstable political situation in which the fairies are bound by unjust treaties after having chosen with the wrong side in the last war. This main plot is enhanched by the stories of many old and new characters.

I really struggled to read this second book. Certainly the writing is not incredible (and the italian translation is even worse), the characters are too many, some situations are really naive, but I think the main problem of the book is that I hate the protagonists. The main character is a terrible Mary Sue, the protagonist is a Marty Stu emo. Instead I really like some of the secondary characters.

I think I will also read the last book (maybe this time in English) for completeness and to discover what will the characters I like do, but in general I am not satisfied.

La maschera d'argento/The Silver Mask (Cassandra Clare e Holly Black)

Per il white day la Pelosa Metà mi ha regalato La maschera d'argento (The Silver Mask), il quarto libro di "Magisterium", una serie urban fantasy scritta da Holly Black (famosa soprattutto per "Spiderwick - le cronache" e la trilogia de "La fata delle tenebre") e Cassandra Clare (famosa per la serie "Shadowhunters"). In teoria si tratta di una pentalogia, per cui è il penultimo romanzo della serie. Nel 2014 è uscito, "L'anno di ferro" (trovate la mia recensione qui), nel 2015 "Il guanto di rame" (trovate la mia recensione qui) e nel 2016 "La chiave di bronzo" (trovate la mia recensione qui).

I presupposti di "Magisterium", soprattutto all'inizio, erano molto simili a quelli di Harry Potter. Nel nostro mondo esiste una scuola di magia, il Magisterium, dove va a studiare chi scopre di avere capacità magiche. Il protagonista è Callum Hunt, che da bambino è stato l'unico sopravvissuto ad una delle stragi compiute da un mago malvagio. All'inizio della serie viene ammesso al Magisterium e stringe una forte amicizia con i suoi compagni Aaron e Tamara. Alla fine del primo libro Callum fa una tragica scoperta riguardo alla propria identità che cambia completamente la sua vita.

Durante la serie, le forze del Nemico della Morte, il mago malvagio che ha scatenato l'ultima guerra magica, si sono gradualmente rafforzate e, ne "La maschera d'argento", riescono a rapire Callum, che è costretto a rimettere in discussione i suoi valori e affrontare il suo passato... e i suoi sentimenti.

Sarà perché finalmente viene affrontata la questione centrale su cui si basa la lotta fra "bene" e "male", sarà perché finalmente la sottotrama romantica assume importanza, sarà perché ci sono un paio di colpi di scena belli e non scontati, sarà per il senso dell'umorismo un po' infantile, ma ho divorato pagina dopo pagina.

Certo, ci sono delle ingenuità. I cattivi non sono del tutto convincenti e il colpo di scena finale sembra un po' forzato. In più, di nuovo, non sono affatto convinta della traduzione (continuo a leggere la serie in italiano solo per prestarla a mio marito). Eppure, rispetto al libro precedente, che mi ha quasi annoiato, non c'è paragone. Non vedo l'ora di leggere la conclusione della saga.

For the white day, the Hairy Half gave me "The Silver Mask", the fourth book of "Magisterium", an urban fantasy series written by Holly Black (famous for "Spiderwick - the chronicles" and the "Ironside" trilogy) and Cassandra Clare (best known for the "Shadowhunters"  series). In theory it is a pentalogy, so this is the penultimate novel in the series. The Iron Trial" was realeased in 2014 (you can find my review here), "The Copper Gauntlet" in 2015 (you can find my review here) and "The bronze key" in 2016 (you can find my review here).

The assumptions of "Magisterium", especially at the beginning, were very similar to those of Harry Potter. In our world there is a school of magic, the Magisterium, where people who discovers they have magical abilities go to study. The protagonist is Callum Hunt, who as a child was the only survivor of one of the massacres performed by an evil wizard. At the beginning of the series he was admitted to the Magisterium and made a strong friendship with his schoolmates Aaron and Tamara. At the end of the first book Callum makes a tragic discovery about his identity that completely changes his life.

During the series, the forces of the Enemy of Death, the evil wizard who unleashed the last magical war, gradually strengthen and, in "The Silver Mask", they manage to kidnap Callum, who is forced to question his values ​​and face his past... and his feelings.

It may be because finally the central issue on which the struggle between "good" and "bad" is based is dealt with, it may be because finally the romantic subplot takes importance, it may be because there are a couple of nice and not obvious twists, it may be for the childish sense of humor, but I devoured page after page.

Of course, there are ingenuities. The bad guys are not entirely convincing and the final twist seems a bit forced. In addition, again, I think the italian translation wasn't so good (I continue to read the series in italian just to lend it to my husband). Yet, compared to the previous book, which almost bored me, there is no comparison. I can not wait to read the ending of the saga.

Le cronache dell'Accademia Shadowhunters/Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy (Cassandra Clare, etc.)

"Le cronache dell'Accademia Shadowhunters" (Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy) è una serie di racconti del 2016 ambientati nell'universo "Shadowhunters" creato da Cassandra Clare ed è uno dei quattro companion book della serie. Le aurici sono la stessa Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson e Robin Wasserman.

I racconti vedono protagonista Simon Lewis, uno dei personaggi principali della parte della serie ambientata ai giorni nostri. Dopo gli eventi della guerra contro Valentine, Simon, che ha perso la memoria, tornando ad una specie di punto zero mentre il resto del mondo sembra andato avanti, decide di diventare uno shadowhunter per cercare di recuperare i suoi ricordi e rientrare a fare parte del mondo magico a cui ormai i suoi amici appartengono.

Diventate un cacciatore di demoni però prevede la frequenza dell'Accademia a Idris, il paese degli shadowhunters. L'accademia è mezza diroccata, in pessime condizioni igieniche e serve pessimo cibo. Lì Simon si fa nuovi amici e nuovi nemici, soprattutto fra chi pensa che gli unici veri shadowhunters siano quelli di sangue puro.

All'interno dei racconti, i nuovi personaggi risultano più credibili di quelli vecchi. C'è un buon colpo di scena, ma per il resto il libro si regge tutto su Simon, il protagonista più umano e divertente delle prime saghe.

Lo consiglio ai fan di Simon, gli altri possono passare.

"Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy" is a 2016 series of stories set in the "Shadowhunters" universe created by Cassandra Clare and is one of the four companion boock of the series. THe authors are Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson and Robin Wasserman.

The stories feature Simon Lewis, one of the main characters of the part of the series set in our time. After the events of the war against Valentine, Simon, who lost his memory, returning to a kind of zero point while the rest of the world seems to have gone on, decides to become a shadowhunter to try to recover his memory and return to be part of the magical world to which his friends are now belonging.

To become a demon hunter, however, he has to attend the Academy in Idris, the country of the shadowhunters. The academy is half in ruins, has a poor hygiene and serves bad food. There Simon makes new friends and new enemies, especially among those who think that the only true shadowhunters are those of pure blood.

Within the stories, the new characters are more credible than the old ones. There is a good twist, but otherwise the book stands on the character of Simon, the most humorous and entertaining one of the first sagas.

I recommend it to Simon's fans, other people can pass.

Trattoria russa Tre Orsi (White Day)

Per il White Day io e la Pelosa Metà siamo andati alla Trattoria russa Tre Orsi, un ristorante russo in Viale Certosa 181 a Milano.

La vetrina era dipinta con un paesaggio bucolico che sembrava uscito da una fiaba.

L'arredamento dell'ingresso era così così, con tende troppo luccicanti e arredi di carta per un battesimo. L'interno però era più carino, con quadri di varia qualità e arredi e finiture in legno.

Il cameriere era in divisa e molto gentile e disponibile e c'erano degli avventori russi.

For White Day the Hairy Half and I went to the russian restaurant Trattoria Tre Orsi,in Viale Certosa 181 in Milan.

The window was painted with a bucolic, fairytale-like scene.

The decor of the entrance was so-so, with too shiny curtains and paper furnishings for a baptism. The interior, however, was nicer, with paintings of various qualities and wooden furniture and finishes.

The waiter was in uniform and very kind and helpful. There were also russian customers.

Ci è stato dato un antipastino di ottima vodka e cetriolini.

We got an appetizer of excellent vodka and pickles.

Come antipasto abbiamo preso entrambi i blini alle uova di salmone, serviti con panna acida, che erano deliziosi.

Da bere abbiamo provato una birra russa niente male.

As a starter we both chose salmon blini, served with sour cream, which were delicious.

We also ordered a pretty good Russian beer.

Come primi ci siamo divisi gli spaghetti con panna e uova di salmone e i pelimeni (ravioli russi) alle uova di salmone (sì, adoriamo le uova di salmone, soprattutto io).

As first courses we split  spaghetti with cream and salmon roe and pelimeni (Russian ravioli) with salmon roe (yes, we love salmon roe, especially I).

Sebbene fossimo pieni, abbiamo preso anche il dolce: blini al miele, noci, nocciole e anacardi e blini con una favolosa marmellata di rose in cui ho trovato diversi petali.

I prezzi non sono bassissimi, ma nemmeno spaventosi (specie se si usano le convenzioni che si possono trovare sulla pagina Facebook, su The Fork o se si prende un menù). Direi che ce la si può cavare con 20-25€ a seconda di quello che si prende.

Although we were full, we also got a dessert: blini with honey, walnuts, hazelnuts and cashews and blini with a fabulous roses jam in which I found several petals.

The prices are not very low, but also not very high (especially if you use the discounts you can find on the Facebook page, on The Fork or if you take a combination menu). I would say that you can get away with a 20-25€ bill depending on what you take.

La Pelosa Metà mi ha anche regalato il quarto volume della serie "Magisterium" di Cassandra Clare e Holly Black, "La maschera d'argento" (The Silver Mask).

E' stata proprio una bella serata, ci voleva proprio perché sto avendo un pessimo periodo al lavoro.

La forma dell'acqua/The shape of water

Sabato scorso, per festeggiare San Valentino in ritardo, io e la Pelosa Metà siamo andati al cinema a vedere "La forma dell'acqua - The Shape of Water", l'ultimo film diretto da Guillermo del Toro, vincitore del Leone d'oro per il miglior film alla 74ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia, di due Golden Globe per il miglior regista e la miglior colonna sonora originale e di ben tredici Oscar.

Il film è ambientato a Baltimora negli anni '60, durante la guerra fredda. La protagonista è una donna muta che convive con l'amico Giles, disegnatore pubblicitario fallito, e lavora come addetta alle pulizie in un laboratorio segreto governativo. Il suo mondo cambia quando viene portato al laboratorio per essere studiato un misterioso uomo anfibio e con lui arriva il colonnello Strickland, un uomo pieno di sé e violento verso la creatura nonostante sia chiaramente senziente.
Ho apprezzato la scelta di attori fuori dai canoni di bellezza standard e soprattutto di personaggi legati da un comune senso di emarginazione che li rende interessanti e umani. In effetti i personaggi con meno spessore sono quelli con meno problematiche, maschi bianchi in posizioni di potere, che diventano quasi macchiette.
 Tuttavia, nonostante l'ambientazione storica ben fatta e qualche scena molto cruda o anche troppo realistica, non si tratta di una storia che pone al centro una critica sociale, ma di una storia d'amore che è fondamentalmente una fiaba.
Sono i personaggi e l'unione a volte stridente fra realistico e fiabesco, uniti alla splendida fotografia e alle bellissime musiche, a rendere impossibile rimanere indifferenti davanti a questo film.
Io l'ho trovato meraviglioso, lo consiglio senz'altro.

Un mio veloce acquerello ispirato al film/A quick watercolour of mine inspired by the movie

Last Saturday, as a late Valentine's Day celebration, the Hairy Half and I went to the cinema to watch "The Shape of Water", the last film directed by Guillermo del Toro, winner of the Golden Lion for the best film at the 74th Venice Film Festival, of two Golden Globes for the best director and the best original soundtrack and of thirteen Oscars.

The film is set in Baltimore in the 1960s, during the Cold War. The protagonist is a mute woman who lives with her friend Giles, a failed advertiser artist, and who works as a cleaner in a secret government laboratory. Her world changes when  a mysterious amphibious man is brought to the laboratory to be studied and with him arrives Colonel Strickland, a man full of himself and violent towards the creature despite it is clearly sentient.

I appreciated the choice of actors out of the beauty standards and above all of characters linked by a common sense of marginalization that makes them interesting and human. In fact the shallower characters were those with less problems, white males in positions of power, who became almost caricatures.

 However, despite the well-done historical setting and some very brutal or even too realistic scenes, it is not a story that focuses on social criticism, but on a love story that is basically a fairy tale.

It is because of the characters and the sometimes jarring union between realistic and fairylike elements, combined with an awesome photography and beautiful music, that it is impossible to remain indifferent to this film.

I found it wonderful, I definitely recommend it.

Rivers of London, Moon over Soho, Whispers Underground

"Rivers of London" è una serie di libri dall'autore inglese Ben Aaronovitch. Al momento la saga è costituita da 6 libri: "Rivers of London", edito nel 2011 e vincitore del Galaxy National Book Award per il Nuovo scrittore dell'Anno, "Moon over Soho", sempre del 2011, "Whispers Under Ground", del 2012, "Broken Homes", del 2013, "Foxglove Summer", del 2014, "The Hanging Tree", del 2016, e varie storie brevi. Io ho letto i primi tre libri, che recensirò qui.

La storia a partire dal 2015 è anche stata adattata in una serie a fumetti sceneggiata dall'autore con Andrew Cartmel e disegnata da Lee Sullivan. 

La serie è ambientata nella Londra dei giorni nostri. Il protagonista è il figlio di un jazzista eroinomane e di un'immigrata della Sierra Leone, Peter Grant, che ha appena finito la scuola di polizia. Durante un caso Peter si ritrova a raccogliere la testimonianza... di un fantasma. A seguito di questa esperienza, Peter si ritrova reclutato nientemeno che da una misteriosa unità speciale della polizia di Londra, composta solo dall'ispettore Nightingale, un uomo che sembra uscito da un'altra epoca, che si occupa di risolvere i casi soprannaturali. Peter si ritrova così ad imparare la magia e scoprire le creature magiche che abitano Londra mentre tenta di risolvere i casi che gli vengono assegnati. Intorno a lui si muove un universo di personaggi, in primo luogo la collega Lesley May, una poliziotta decisamente più dotata del protagonista, per cui Peter ha una cotta, la misteriosa Molly, una creatura sovrannaturale che lavora per la centrale di polizia capeggiata da  Nightingale, l'ispettore capo Seawoll e il sergente Stephanopoulos della omicidi.
Nel primo romanzo, Peter si trova ad indagare su si un serial killer mentre tenta di fare da paciere in una faida fra vecchi e nuovi spiriti del fiume Tamigi e dei suoi affluenti.
Nel secondo, si ritrova ad affrontare il fascino di una donna estremamente sexy mentre indaga su di una serie di omicidi di jazzisti. Intanto si profila all'orizzonte un nemico estremamente pericoloso...
Il terzo romanzo si svolge principalmente nella Londra sotterranea fra la metropolitana, dove viene ritrovato il corpo di un giovane statunitense, e le fogne.
In tutti i casi la vera protagonista è Londra, con i suoi luoghi iconici, la sua storia e i suoi misteri.
La serie, con la sua magia e il punto di vista spiccatamente ironico del protagonista, sembra un mix per adulti di Percy Jackson e Harry Potter, mescolato con un buon romanzo giallo. Il target non è fraintendibile, per via delle scene di sesso e violenza, ma soprattutto perché la narrazione è chiaramente matura, senza angst e turbe adolescenziali.
L'ho trovata una serie stupenda, che non vedo l'ora di andare avanti a divorare.

The series is set in modern-day London. The protagonist is Peter Grant, the son of a heroin addicted jazz player and of an immigrant from Sierra Leone, who has just finished the police academy. During one investigation, Peter ends up gathering the testimony of... a ghost. Following this experience, Peter finds himself recruited by no less than a mysterious special unit of the London police, dealing with solving supernatural cases, composed only by Inspector Nightingale, a man who seems to have emerged from another era. So Peter finds himself learning magic and discovering the magical creatures that inhabit London as he tries to solve police cases. Around him moves a universe of characters, first of all the colleague Lesley May, for whom Peter has a crush, a much better police officer than the protagonist, the mysterious Molly, a supernatural creature who works for the police station headed by Nightingale, Chief Inspector Seawoll and Sergeant Stephanopoulos of the Murder Investigation Team.
In the first novel, Peter finds himself investigating a serial killer while trying to act as a peacemaker in a feud between old and new spirits of the river Thames and its tributaries.
In the second, he finds himself seduced by extremely sexy woman as he investigates a series killings connected by jazz. Meanwhile, an extremely dangerous enemy looms on the horizon...
The third novel takes place mainly in the underground London, between the subway, where is found the body of a young American, and the sewers.
In all cases the real protagonist is London, with its iconic places, its history and its mysteries.
The series, with its magic and the distinctly ironic point of view of the protagonist, looks like an adult cross between Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, mixed with a good mistery novel. The target can't be misunderstood, because of the scenes of sex and violence, but above all because the narration is clearly mature, without angst and adolescent worries.
I found it a wonderful series, which I can not wait to go on devouring.

Bright

"Bright" è un film del 2017 co-prodotto e diretto da David Ayer e scritto da Max Landis per Netflix.

L'ambientazione è un urban fantasy, una sorta di futuro, molto simile al nostro mondo, di un fantasy classico, di quelli con umani, elfi e orchi e un signore oscuro che vuole dominare il mondo. Questo futuro è molto simile al nostro mondo, ma le divisioni in classi sociali sono anche divisioni razziali: gli elfi sono in cima alla piramide e gli orchi in fondo, ancora disprezzati dopo 2000 anni per essersi alleati con il signore oscuro. E di fatto quello che il film riesce a mostrare molto meglio di tanti con ambientazioni realistiche è il razzismo che permea la nostra società.

Il film ricalca lo stilema dei buddy movies con due poliziotti male assortiti (in questo caso un orco e un umano) costretti a collaborare.
Mi è molto piaciuto l'inizio in medias res e l'assenza di spiegoni, ma lo svolgimento della trama è un po' troppo confusionario.
Rimane comunque un'idea geniale e un film che mi è piaciuto molto. Pare che ci sarà un seguito e non vedo l'ora di guardarlo.

"Bright" is a 2017 film co-produced and directed by David Ayer and written by Max Landis for Netflix.
The setting is an urban fantasy, a sort of future, really similar to our world, of one of those classic fantasy books, with humans, elves and orcs and an obscure lord who wants to dominate the world. The divisions in social classes are also racial divisions: the elves are at the top of the pyramid and the orcs at the bottom, still despised after 2000 years their past alliance with the dark lord. And in fact what the film manages to show much better than many with a realistic setting is the racism that permeates our society.
The film follows the buddy movies concept with two mismatched policemen (in this case an ogre and a human) forced to collaborate.
I really liked the beginning in medias res and the absence of explanations, but the development of the plot is a bit too confused.
However, it remains a brilliant idea and a film that I really liked. It seems there is going to be a sequel and I can not wait to watch it.

La nave degli scomparsi/The Ship of the Dead

Finalmente ad ottobre è uscito negli U.S.A. "La nave degli scomparsi" (The Ship of the Dead), l'ultimo romanzo della saga "Magnus Chase e gli Dei di Asgard" (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard) dell'autore statunitense Rick Riordan. Riordan è famoso per i suoi romanzi young adult che inseriscono antiche religioni negli U.S.A. di oggi. La sua serie più famosa è quella dedicata agli dei dell'antica Grecia, "Percy Jackson e gli dei dell'Olimpo" (Percy Jackson & the Olympians), che ho recensito qui, seguita da "Gli eroi dell'Olimpo" (The Heroes of Olympus) in cui inserisce anche le  loro controparti romane, che ho recensito qui. Riordan ha scritto anche una serie dedicata agli dei egizi, "The Kane Chronicles", che ho recensito qui, più un crossover fra Olimpo ed egizi, che ho recensito qui.

Qui avevo già recensito i primi due libri di questa nuova saga dedicata agli dei nordici, "La spada del guerriero" (The Sword of Summer), del 2015 e "Il Martello di Thor" (The Hammer of Thor) del 2016.

Confermo che è la saga dell'autore che ho preferito. Trovo sempre divertentissimo l'umorismo demenziale che è il trademark dell'autore. La trama non è originalissima, non fosse per il modo geniale in cui il protagonista risolve in confronto finale. Ma quello per cui questa saga si distingue dalle altre, anche dalle precedenti di Riordan, sono i personaggi, originalissimi come ideazione (una valchiria musulmana, un nano modaiolo, un elfo sordo e addirittura un personaggio genderfluid), ma anche estremamente umani e credibili.

Mi sono ritrovata a fare il tifo per la coppia principale come un'adolescente in crisi ormonale.

Ormai all'orizzonte nell'universo delle divinità di Riordan si prospetta un mega crossover con la saga di Percy Jackson, la cosa allo stesso tempo mi intriga e mi spaventa.

Intanto mi preparo leggendo la saga destinata al dio Apollo.

Finally in October came out in the US. "The Ship of the Dead", the latest novel by the American author Rick Riordan of the saga "Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard". Riordan is famous for his young adult novels incorporating ancient religions in the US. of today. His most famous series is the one dedicated to the gods of ancient Greece, "Percy Jackson & the Olympians", which I reviewed here, followed by "The Heroes of Olympus", which also includes their Roman counterparts, which I reviewed here. Riordan also wrote a series dedicated to the Egyptian gods, "The Kane Chronicles," which I reviewed here, plus a crossover between the Olympus and the Egyptians, which I reviewed here.

Here I already reviewed the first two books of this new saga dedicated to the Nordic gods, "The Sword of Summer", published in 2015 and "The Hammer of Thor", published in 2016.

I confirm that it is the saga of the author I liked most. I always find funny the crazy humor that is the trademark of the author. The plot is not very original, if not for the brilliant way in which the protagonist solves the final match. But what made this saga stand out from the others, even from the earlier ones by Riordan, are the characters who are very original (a Muslim valchiria, a fashion victim dwarf, a deaf elf and even a genderfluid character), but also extremely human and credible.

I found myself shipping the main couple as a teen in full hormonal crisis.

At the horizon of the universe of Riordan's gods, I think there is a mega crossover with the Percy Jackson saga, which at the same time intrigues and frightens me.

Meanwhile, I will get ready reading the saga dedicated to the god Apollo.

Il Cerchio/The Circle

Per questo Halloween vi propongo "Cirklen", un film svedese del 2015 girato da Benny Andersson, basato sulla trilogia urban fantasy young adult di Engelsfors, scitta dagli svedesi Sara B. Elfgren e Mats Strandberg e pubblicata dal 2011 al 2013. La trilogia è composta da "Il cerchio" (che ho recensito qui), "Il fuoco" (che ho recensito qui) e "La chiave" (che ho recensito qui).

Avendo adorato i libri, ho voluto vedere assolutamente il film seppure in svedese sottotitolato inglese.

La trama riprende molto bene quella del primo libro e anche questo film è idealmente il primo di una trilogia.

Le protagoniste sono sei ragazze dello stesso liceo della piccola città svedese di Engelsfors: Minoo, una "secchiona" di famiglia ricca che non riesce ad interagire con i suoi coetanei, Rebecka, che si è fidanzata da poco e ha disturbi alimentari, Vanessa, una ragazza popolare e vistosa che esce con uno spacciatore in barba al patrigno poliziotto, Anna-Karin, una ragazza di fattoria grassottella che sempre stata vittima di bullismo, Ida, una dei bulli e Linnea, giappo-goth con situazione familiare molto disagiata. Il misterioso suicidio del migliore amico di Linnea, Elias le spingerà ad unirsi per indagare, scoprendo un complotto soprannaturale che ha radici in tempi remotissimi.

Il lato migliore dei libri era il punto di vista inaffidabile delle ragazze, impossibile da rendere in una film.

Nonostante questo il film è riuscito a non deludermi. La storia era molto fedele al libro e le attrici perfette nei loro rispettivi ruoli.

Lo consiglio senz'altro, anche come modo per avvicinarsi ai romanzi.

For this Halloween I suggest you "Cirklen", a 2015 Swedish movie shot by Benny Andersson and based on the young adult urban fantasy trilogy of Engelsfors, by the Swedish writers Sara B. Elfgren and Mats Strandberg and published from 2011 to 2013. The trilogy is composed by "The Circle" (which I reviewed here), "Fire" (which I reviewed here) and "The Key" (which I reviewed here).

Having loved the books, I absolutely wanted to watch the movie even if in Swedish with English subtitles.

The plot follows very well that of the first book and this movie is ideally the first of a trilogy.

The protagonists are six girls of the same high school in the small Swedish town of Engelsfors:Minoo, a "swot" from a wealthy family who is unable to interact with her peers, Rebecka, who recently found a boyfriend and has eating disorders, Vanessa, a popular and showy girl who goes out with a drug dealer in defiance of her police officer stepfather, Anna-Karin, a plump farm girl who was always bullied, Ida, one of the bullies and Linnea, a Japanese-goth with a really difficult family situation. The mysterious suicide of Linnea's best friend, Elias, push them to join forces to investigate, discovering a supernatural plot that has roots in a remote past.

The best side of the books was the unreliable point of view of the girls, that is impossible to show in a film.

Despite this, the film did not disappoint me. The story was very faithful to the book and the actresses perfect in their respective roles.

I would definitely recommend it, also as a way to approach the novels.

The Magicians - season 2

Visto che avevo apprezzato la prima serie di "The Magicians" (che ho recensito qui), non mi sono lasciata scappare la seconda, uscita nel 2017 e sempre costituituita da 13 episodi da 45 minuti ciascuno.

La serie è tratta dalla trilogia fantasy "The Magicians" (2009), "The Magician King" (2011) e "The Magician's Land" (2014) dello scrittore statunitense Lev Grossman (ho recensito il primo romanzo qui, il secondo qui e il terzo qui) che ho adorato.

La trama riprende dal colpo di scena del finale della scorsa stagione ed è ambientata a metà fra la Terra e Fillory. Le strade dei nostri "eroi" si dividono: Quentin è ossessionato da Alice e dalla propria depressione, Julia vuole fermare a tutti i costi il dio che ha evocato ed Elias e Margo rimangono da soli a gestire il regno di Fillory. La serie si chiude con un nuovo colpo di scena.

Dei cambiamenti nei personaggi avevo già parlato nella recensione della prima serie. Ovviamente la seconda segue le basi gettate nella prima.

Ancora una volta, rispetto ai libri, la storia si muove molto più velocemente. Quello che mi ha colpito di più è stato come, pur seguendo altre strade, la serie arrivasse comunque ai nodi si trama dei romanzi.

E ancora una volta, anche per chi non avesse letto gli originali, la storia è perfettamente comprensibile e godibile, e anche se è un po' meno tagliente e anticonformista, risulta comunque estremamente originale nell'ambito dei fantasy "scolastici" alla Harry Potter. Rimane un prodotto maturo, con scene di sesso e violenza anche molto forti (ma mai "troppo", la gente fa sesso vestita e non si versa praticamente sangue).

La seconda serie mi è parsa all'altezza della prima, non superiore e non inferiore. Ora aspetto con ansia la terza!

Since I really liked the first series of "The Magicians" (which I reviewed here), I binge watched the second season, released in 2017 and consisting of 13 episodes of 45 minutes each.

The series is an adaptation of the fantasy trilogy "The Magicians" (2009), "The Magician King" (2011) and "The Magician's Land" (2014) by the american writer Lev Grossman (I reviewed the first novel here, the second here and the third here) wich I really loved.

The plot starts from last season's twist at the ending and is set between Earth and Fillory. The streets of our "heroes" get separated: Quentin is obsessed with Alice and his depression, Julia wants to stop at all costs the god she has evoked, and Elias and Margo remain alone to rule of Fillory. The series closes with a new cliffhanger.

Of the changes in the characters I had already talked in the review of the first series. Obviously the second follows the bases built in the first.

Once again, compared to books, the plot moves much faster. What impressed me most was how, while following other ways, the series came anyway to the plot cored of the novels.

And once again, fthe story is perfectly understandable and enjoyable by the people who haven't read the books too, and although it is a bit less sharp and unconventional than the original, it is still extremely original in the panorama of Harry Potter like "school" fantasy stories. It remains a mature product, with very strong sex and violence scenes (but never too "too much", people have sex while dressed and there virtually isn't any blood).

I think this second series was at the level of the first, not higher and not lower. Now I look anxiously forward to the third!

La torre nera

"La torre nera" (The Dark Tower) è un film del 2017 diretto da Nikolaj Arcel. È tratto dall'omonima saga di Stephen King che io ho amato moltissimo. E qui già si intuisce il primo problema del film: 7 (e più) libri sintetizzati in un film di 95 minuti? Un disastro era prevedibile, ma visto il mio amore per la serie ho rischiato lo stesso.
Il film ha per protagonista Jake Chambers, un undicenne di New York che, dalla morte del padre, fa sogni vividissimi che convincono le persone intorno a lui instabilità mentale. Ma i sogni sono veri: gli inservienti dell'istituto psichiatrico in cui la sua amata madre e il suo nuovo compagno hanno deciso di mandarlo, sono le creature malvagie che indossano pelle umana che ha visto nei suoi sogni. Jake scappa e, attraverso un varco, finisce in un altro mondo dove incontra Roland, un misterioso pistolero un tempo votato alla protezione della Torre Nera che garantisce l'equilibrio dell'universo (Terra compresa). Ora però Roland è in cerca di vendetta contro l'Uomo in Nero, che invece la vuole distruggere.
Ovviamente della storia dei romanzi si è fatto un gran taglia taglia. Rimangono solo alcuni personaggi fortemente modificati sostanzialmente il tutto è stato trasformato in un fantasy per ragazzini. Il che di per sé fa rabbrividire i fan della saga, che si ritrovano una storia molto diversa, a volte in contrasto con l'originale, ma non presuppone che il film sia brutto. E invece è proprio brutto.
La trama è frettolosa, emotivamente imperniata su legami paterni che si creano in tempi troppo brevi, con un cattivo troppo mostrato, che non riesce a fare paura, con un finale non solo semplicistico e banale, ma anche poco soddisfacente.
In conclusione "La torre nera" è un film orribile per i fan della saga di King e bruttino anche per chi non l'ha mai letta. Meglio evitarlo.

"The Dark Tower" is a 2017 film directed by Nikolaj Arcel. It is an adaptation of the saga of the same name by Stephen King, that I really loved. And here appears the first problem of the film: 7 (and more) books synthesized in a 95-minute movie? A disaster was predictable, but seeing my love for the series I risked watching it.
The film stars Jake Chambers, an eleven years odl boy of New York, who, form his father's death, has very vivid dreams that convince people around him of his mental instability. But the dreams are true: the psychiatric institute where his beloved mother and her boyfriend have decided to send him, are the evil creatures that wear human skin who he saw in his dreams. Jake runs away and, through a passage, ends up in another world where he meets Roland, a mysterious gunslinger once voted to protect the Black Tower which guarantees the balance of the universe (including Earth). But now Roland is looking for revenge against the Man in Black, who instead wants to destroy it.
Of course, the history of novels was cut down a lot. Only a few heavily modified characters remain, and everything has been turned into a fantasy aimed at kids. Which in itself makes the saga fans shudder, as they find a very different story, sometimes in contrast with the original, but does not imply that movie is bad. But indeed it is.
The plot is hasty, emotionally based on fatherly ties that are created in too short a time, with a too-shown antagonist, who doesn't manage to frighten the public, with an ending that is not only simplistic and trivial, but also unsatisfactory.
In conclusion, "The Black Tower" is an horrible movie for the fans of King's saga but also not so good for those who have never read it. Better to avoid it.

Passenger series (Alexandra Bracken)

La saga "Passenger" è costituita da due romanzi, "Passenger", pubblicato nel 2016, e "Traveller" ("Wayfarer" in originale), pubblicato nel 2017, scritti dalla statunitense Alexandra Bracken.

La protagonista è Henrietta Spencer, una sedicenne di Manhattan che, al suo debutto come violinista professionista, si ritrova all'improvviso scaraventata su di una nave pirata nel XVIII secolo. Lì incontra Nicholas Carter, un giovane che vuole conquistare una vita degna di essere vissuta nonostante sia nato da una schiava.

Da queste premesse si sviluppa una storia d'amore e d'azione, piena di intrighi, che si sviluppa lungo vari luoghi ed epoche grazie all'espediente dei viaggi nel tempo, che mi piace moltissimo. Nella saga i viaggi nel tempo sembrano essere legati più alla magia che alla tecnologia. C'è un vago tentativo di spiegazione scientifica, ma ci sono vari elementi che tendono al soprannaturale.

Ho trovato la narrazione molto avvincente, grazie alla trama intricata (ma coerente) e ai continui cambi di scenario. I personaggi principali sono abbastanza stereotipati, ma interessanti e credibili. Mi è piaciuta la scelta di un protagonista mulatto che viene discriminato per il colore della sua pelle. Altri personaggi, come sono meno realistici, ma nel contesto funzionano. Ho apprezzato l'inserzione di personaggi omosessuali.

L'elemento che ho trovato più debole è stata la scrittura in stile romanzaccio d'amore, pienissima di aggettivi (l'autrice sembra amare moltissimo le metafore basate sulla seta e sul miele). Bisogna però sottolineare che ho letto la saga in italiano, probabilmente in originale è molto migliore.

In conclusione penso che questi romanzi non siano in sé incredibili, ma che sarebbero un'ottima base per una serie tv.

The "Passenger" saga is made of two novels, "Passenger", released in 2016, and "Wayfarer", published in 2017, written by US author Alexandra Bracken.

The protagonist is Henrietta Spencer, a sixteen-year-old Manhattan girl who, at her debut as a professional violinist, suddenly finds herself on a pirate ship in the 18th century. There she meets Nicholas Carter, a young man who wants to conquer a worthy life despite being born form a slave.

From these premises develops a story of love and action, full of intrigues, which evolves along various places and ages thanks to the device of the time travels that I really like. In the saga, time travel seems to be more tied to magic than to technology. There is a vague attempt to give a scientific explanation, but there are various elements that tend to the supernatural.

I found the narrative very enthralling, thanks to the intricate (but consistent) plot and the ever-changing scenarios. The main characters are quite stereotyped, but interesting and credible. I liked the choice of a mulatto protagonist who is discriminated because of the color of his skin. Other characters are less realistic, but work ok in the context. I enjoyed the inclusion of homosexual characters.

The element I found to be weaker the romantic novel-like writing, with many adjectives (the author seems to love metaphors based on silk and honey). But I have to point out that I read the saga in Italian, probably the original is much better.

In conclusion I think these novels are not incredible in themselves, but that they would be a great basis for a TV series.

Riordan è famoso per i suoi romanzi young adult che inseriscono antiche religioni negli U.S.A. di oggi. La sua serie più famosa è quella dedicata agli dei dell'antica Grecia, "Percy Jackson e gli dei dell'Olimpo" (Percy Jackson & the Olympians), che ho recensito qui, seguita da "Gli eroi dell'Olimpo" (The Heroes of Olympus) in cui inserisce anche le  loro controparti romane, che ho recensito qui. Riordan ha scritto anche una serie dedicata agli dai egizi, "The Kane Chronicles", che ho recensito qui, più un crossover fra Olimpo ed egizi, che ho recensito qui.

"Magnus Chase e gli Dei di Asgard" si colloca sulla stessa linea, questa volta con gli dei nordici. La saga sarà una trilogia. Per ora sono usciti i primi due volumi, "La spada del guerriero" (The Sword of Summer), del 2015 e "Il Martello di Thor" (The Hammer of Thor) del 2016. L'uscita dell'ultimo, "The Ship of Dead", è prevista per ottobre 2017. In aggiunta sarà pubblicato "Il libro segreto", dedicato alla mitologia norrena. 

Il protagonista di questa nuova saga è Magnus Chase, senzatetto di Boston (e cugino di Annabeth Chase della saga degli dei dell'Olimpo: crossover alle porte). Il giorno del suo sedicesimo compleanno scopre di essere il figlio di un dio nordico e si ritrova ad affrontare un gigante di fuoco.

In questa saga Riordan ritorna alla divertentissima comicità demenziale dei primi romanzi per ragazzi. La trama è coerente e fila bene, ma il pezzo forte de "Gli Dei di Asgard" sono alcuni personaggi che sovvertono tutti gli stereotipi: una valchiria musulmana, un nano modaiolo, un elfo sordo e addirittura un personaggio genderfluid.

In più Magnus è un protagonista molto simpatico, che fornisce un punto di vista narrante con cui è facile identificarsi.

Non vedo l'ora di leggere il prossimo! Riordan è sempre una certezza.

"Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard" is based on the same concept, this time with the Northern Gods. The saga will be a trilogy. At the moment only two volumes were publishes, "The Sword of Summer", published in 2015 and "The Hammer of Thor", publishes in 2016. The release of "The Ship Of Dead, is scheduled for October 2017. In addition will be published "The Secret Book", dedicated to Norse mythology.
The protagonist of this new saga is Magnus Chase, a sixteen-year-old homeless boy living in Boston (and cousin of Annabeth Chase of the Olympian gods saga: crossover impending). The day of his sixteenth birthday he discovers he is the son of a Northern god and faces a fire giant.
In this saga, Riordan returns to the super funny absurd humor of the first young adult novels. The plot is consistent and nice, but the masterwork of "The Gods of Asgard" are some characters that overwhelm all the stereotypes: a Muslim Valkyrie, a fashionable dwarf, a deaf elf and even a genderfluid character.
In addition, Magnus is a very nice protagonist who provides a point of view with which it is easy to identify.
I can not wait to read the next novel! Riordan is always a winning choice.

Shadowhunters - season II

"Shadowhunters" è una serie tv statunitense del 2016. Si tratta del secondo adattamento della saga "Shadowhunters" di Cassandra Clare, dopo il film "Città di ossa" del 2013 (che è stato un flop), prodotta sempre dalla Constantin Film. La prima stagione è composta da 13 episodi da 40 minuti ciascuno, mentre la seconda da 20.

La prima stagione (che avevo recensito qui) era un po' truzza, ma ancora mi dava delle speranze di poter essere meglio del film e, se non all'altezza dei libri, almeno decente. La seconda stagione mi ha tolto definitivamente questa speranza. I personaggi sono più irrazionali, burini e inespressivi che mai, le trame diventano sempre più insensate, il cattivo non ha un briciolo di carisma e tutte le deviazioni fatte rispetto ai libri mi sono sembrate per il peggio.
Non so se vedrò la terza stagione, ma se lo farò temo che sarà per farmi qualche risata.

"Shadowhunters" is a 2016 U.S.A. television series. It is the second adaptation of the"Shadowhunters" saga by Cassandra Clare, after the movie "City of Bones" in 2013 (which was a flop), also produced by Constantin Film. The first season consists of 13 episodes of 40 minutes each, the second of 20 episodes.

The first season (which I reviewed here) had a lot of weak points, but still gave me hopes of being better than the movie, and if not up to the books, at least decent. The second season has definitely taken away that hope. The characters are more irrational, vulgar and expressionless as ever, the plots become more and more foolish, the bad guy does not have an ounce of charisma and all the changes to the story of the books seemed for the worst.

I do not know if I will see the third season, but if I'll do it I'm afraid it will be to make fun of it.

Miss Peregrine - La casa dei ragazzi speciali/Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

"Miss Peregrine - La casa dei ragazzi speciali" (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children) è un film del 2016, sceneggiato da Jane Goldman e diretto da Tim Burton. E' l'adattamento del del romanzo del 2011 "La casa per bambini speciali di Miss Peregrine" dello scrittore statunitense Ransom Riggs.
Dopo aver letto il romanzo, nonostante non mi sia piaciuto del tutto (trovate la mia recensione qui), e nonostante le pessime recensioni, mi è venuta la curiosità di vedere il film.
La storia a grandi linee è la stessa: Jacob Portman cresce con le storie del nonno sulla casa per bambini speciali, gestita da Miss Peregrine, che lo aveva ospitato durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Da adolescente Jacob si convince che le storie del nonno siano false. Ma un giorno accade un terribile incidente che lo convince a rivedere le proprie convinzioni.
Rispetto al romanzo ci sono varie differenze: il carattere del protagonista è abbastanza diverso, le età di vari personaggi cambiano, il potere del personaggio femminile principale viene scambiato con quello di un altro, lo psicologo diventa una psicologa, l'anno e le caratteristiche del loop temporale vengono cambiati, come pure la battaglia finale (e non solo).
Per rendermi meglio conto del valore del film come opera indipendente dal libro mi sono confrontata con la Pelosa Metà che non lo aveva letto.
Il mio giudizio è in larga parte in controtendenza rispetto alle recensioni che ho letto: in molte cose il film mi è sembrato molto carino, a volte addirittura migliore del libro. Per esempio il ritmo del film mi è parso decisamente più gradevole, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i tagli alla lunghissima introduzione. Anche il protagonista mi è parso più simpatico (mentre l'Emma del libro ha più carattere).
La cosa su cui però sia io sia la Pelosa Metà abbiamo dovuto concordare è che i cattivi, che nel libro sono spaventosi, sono caricaturali e la battaglia finale è addirittura ridicola e finisce per rovinare in buona parte il tono del film, che risulta troppo gotico per i bambini, ma troppo infantile per gli adolescenti.

"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is a 2016 film, written by Jane Goldman and directed by Tim Burton. It's the adaptation of the 2011 novel "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" by the American writer Ransom Riggs.
After reading the novel, although I didn't like it entirely (you can find my review here), and despite the bad reviews, I was curious to watch the film.
The story is roughly the same: Jacob Portman grows with his grandfather's stories about the house for peculiar kids, run by Miss Peregrine, who hosted him during the Second World War. As a teenager Jacob gets convinced that the stories of his grandfather are false. But one day happens a terrible accident that convinces him to review his convictions.
Compared to the novel there are several differences: the character of the protagonist is quite different, the ages of the various characters change, the power of the main female character is exchanged with that of another, the male shrink becomes female, the year and the characteristics of the time loop change, as well as the final battle (and other stuff).
To understand better the value of the film as a work independent from the book I discussed it with my Hairy Half who didn't read it.
My opinion is largely in contrast with the reviews I read: in many things the film seemed very nice, sometimes even better than the book. For example, the rhythm of the film seemed much more pleasant, especially regarding the cuts to the long introduction. I liked more the main character too (while Emma's is more interesting in the book).

The thing which, however, both I and the Hairy Half had to agree on is that the foes, who in the book are quite scary, are caricatures, and the final battle is even ridiculous, and ends up ruining the tone of the film, which is too gothic for kids, but too childish for teenagers.

The Librarians

"The Librarians" è una serie televisiva statunitense del 2014. Per ora è composta da tre stagioni, ciascuna di 10 episodi della durata di 42-50 minuti.
E' lo spin-off della serie di film per la televisione "The Librarian" degli anni 2000, che vedevano protagonista Flynn Carsen (interpretato da Noah Wyle, che adoro da "E.R. - Medici in prima linea"), un brillante studioso assunto da una biblioteca magica per proteggere e arricchire la sua collezione di potenti, ma pericolosissimi oggetti magici.

All'inizio della nuova serie tv, Flynn Carsen si trova a dover risolvere l'omicidio delle persone convocate insieme a lui al colloquio per diventare Bibliotecario. Ne sono rimaste in vita solo quattro, che quel giorno non si erano presentate: Ezekiel Jones, ladro e specialista di tecnologia avanzata, Cassandra Cillian, una matematica con una memoria fotografica che è stata dotata di sinestesia da un tumore al cervello e Jacob Stone, esperto in storia e arte.

In questo modo nasce un'improbabile squadra, sotto l'ala protettrice di Eve Baird, un colonnello dell'antiterrorismo, scelta dalla Biblioteca come nuova Custode incaricata della protezione dei Bibliotecari.
La serie mantiene il tono leggero dei film: i Bibliotecari hanno in mano la salvezza del mondo, lottano e vivono mille avventure, ma nessuno si fa mai davvero male. Tornano anche gli improbabili oggetti leggendari (come Excalibur) e più in generale le soluzioni magiche a problemi altrettanto poco logici.
Tuttavia, se già i film, con tutti i loro difetti, erano simpatici, la serie è resa ancora più avvincente dalle dinamiche che si sviluppano fra i vari personaggi con personalità e abilità diverse.
Dopo essermi divorata la prima, sono già passata alla seconda, dal che si deduce facilmente che mi sta piacendo molto. Certo, è una visione decisamente leggera, perfetta per staccare.

It's the spin-off of the television movies "The Librarian" of the 2000s, which saw as the protagonist Flynn Carsen (played by Noah Wyle, who I love from "ER - Doctors at the forefront"), a brilliant scholar hired by a magical library to protect and enrich its collection of powerful but dangerous magic items.
At the start of the new TV series, Flynn Carsen has to solve the murder of the people who were called with him to the interview to become a librarian. Only four are still alive, the ones who skipped the interview: Ezekiel Jones, a thief and advanced technology specialist, Cassandra Cillian, a mathematician with a photographic memory who got synesthesia from a brain tumor and Jacob Stone, expert in history and art.
This is the birth of an unlikely team, under the wing of Eve Baird, a counterterrorism colonel, chosen by the Library as the new Guardian in charge of the protection of the Librarians.
The series keeps the light tone of the films: the librarians have to salve the world, fight and live thousands of adventures, but no one ever gets really hurt. Also return the unlikely legendary items (like Excalibur), and in general the magic solutions to magic problems.
However, if the films were already nice and funny, with all their faults, the series is even better because of the dynamics that develop between the various characters with different personalities and skills.
After I binge watched the first season, I have already passed to the second, from which you can easily deduce that I'm enjoying it thoroughly. Sure, it's a very light vision, but it's perfect for a break from reality.

"La casa dei bambini speciali di Miss Peregrine" (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children) è un romanzo young adult del 2011 dello scrittore statunitense Ransom Riggs. E' il primo di una serie.

Si tratta di un urban fantasy incentrato su di una serie di bizzarre fotografie antiche raccolte da Riggs.
Il protagonista, Jacob Portman è un ragazzo di una ricca famiglia statunitense, cresciuto con le storie del nonno sul tempo passato durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale in un orfanotrofio di un'isola gallese che ospitava ragazzini speciali, dotati di poteri soprannaturali, sotto la tutela della rettrice, Miss Peregrine. Crescendo Jacob si convince che le storie del nonno siano menzogne costruite per coprire la ben più terribile realtà dell'Olocausto a cui, in quanto ebreo era scampato. Ma un giorno accade un terribile incidente che lo convince a rivedere le proprie convinzioni.
Nel 2016 Tim Burton ne ha tratto un film che mi sembrava interessante, ma ne erano state fatte recensioni pessime. Considerando che in genere i libri sono migliori dei film che ne vengono tratti, ho iniziato ad interessarmi al romanzo originale. La recensione di Katie di I'm a Table, seppure non completamente positiva, mi ha dato la spinta finale.
Quello che distingue il romanzo da una versione Young Adult degli X-Men sono gli elementi horror (niente che un ragazzino non possa leggere, si tratta soprattutto di atmosfere e piccole cose) e la questione dei viaggi nel tempo, che viene risolta con la magia (quindi con un meccanismo molto semplice per il lettore), ma che comunque è un espediente narrativo interessante, forse il più interessante del libro. Infatti si sente che "La casa dei bambini speciali di Miss Peregrine" è la prima parte di una serie nella lentezza dell'inizio. Infatti ci mette parecchio a decollare: solo per trovare la casa Jacob ci mette almeno un terzo del volume. Finalmente, a fine libro l'azione si fa concitata, ma il finale rimane apertissimo.
L'idea del libro fotografico è molto interessante, ma il risultato non è ottimale: nei momenti più improbabili c'è sempre un personaggio pronto a tirare fuori un vecchio album. Sembrano inserite in maniera forzata e a volte alcuni personaggi introdotti in questa maniera si perdono per strada.
Parlando di personaggi, Jacob è un protagonista realistico, ma un po' fiacco. L'idea potenzialmente più interessante era quella che i bambini speciali fossero anziani a cui fosse stata fermata la crescita artificialmente, ma che si comportano comunque come bambini. Tuttavia viene abbandonato quasi immediatamente qualunque approfondimento della questione.
In definitiva un libro con delle premesse interessanti che non riesce a portare a termine, riuscito a metà. Sarei comunque curiosa di leggere il seguito per vedere se il tema dei viaggi nel tempo viene sviluppato ulteriormente e come.

The protagonist, Jacob Portman is a boy from a rich american family, who grew up with his grandfather's stories about the time he passed during the Second World War in an orphanage on a Welsh island which housed special kids, with supernatural powers, under the tutelage of Miss Peregrine. Growing, Jacob gets convinced that the stories of his grandfather are lies built to cover the even more terrible reality of the Holocaust from which, being a jew, he escaped. But one day happenes a terrible accident that convinces him to review these convictions.
In 2016 Tim Burton adapted this book into a film that seemed interesting, but got horrible reviews. As in general the books are better than their film adaptations, I became interested in the original novel. The review of Katie of I'm a Table, though not completely positive, gave me the final push.
What puts this novel apart from a Young Adult version of the X-Men are the horror elements (nothing that a kid can not read, it is mainly the atmosphere and some small things) and the issue of time travel, which is solved with magic (therefore with a mechanism that is very simple for the reader), but that is an interesting plot device, perhaps the most interesting of the book. In fact, it's obvious that "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is the first part of a series, starting from the slow start. In fact Jacob spends at least one third of the volume only to find the house. Finally, at the end of the book the action becomes faster, but the ending remains wide open.
The idea of ​​the photo book is very interesting, but the result is not optimal: in the most unlikely moments there is always a character ready to pull out an old album. It seems forced, and sometimes some characters introduced in this way fall by the wayside.
Speaking of characters, Jacob is a quite realistic, but a little uninteresting character. The potentially most interesting idea was that special children were old people whose growth had been artificially stopped, but still behave like children. However, any deepening of the matter was abandoned almost immediately.
In the end it is a book with interesting premises that he fails to completely develop, only half successful. I would still be curious to read the follow up to discover if the time travel theme is further developed and how.
