Dumbo on the wall (Maimeri)

Ho passato il secondo weekend di marzo a realizzare un murale di Dumbo per la cameretta di una bambina che sarebbe nata a breve.

I spent the second weekend of March doing a Dumbo mural for the bedroom of a baby who would be born soon.

Per riprodurre il disegno scelto dai committenti nella scala che volevano (1,10m), per prima cosa ho dovuto ricavare i contorni e ingrandirlo con Photoshop e Illustrator.

Per riportare il disegno sulla parete ho usato la tecnica dello spolvero: ho fatto tanti buchini sui contorni del disegno e li ho spolverati con un pennello con polvere di gesso. Purtroppo questo metodo ha funzionato solo a grandi linee, ho dovuto ricostruire i particolari.

Ho tracciato i contorni con il gesso e ho iniziato a riempirli usando l'acrilico.

To copy the draving chosen by the costumers in the scale they wanted (1.10m), first I had to draw the outlines and enlarge it with Photoshop and Illustrator.

To copy the drawing the wall I used the technique of pounce: I made a lot of little holes on the contours of the drawing and dusted them with chalk dust using a brush. Unfortunately this method only worked for the rough outlines, I had to reconstruct the details.

I traced the contours with chalk and I started filling them using acrylic.

Nelle foto sopra vedete il processo. Ho cominciato con colori piatti, poi nuvole (a spugnatura), poi luci e ombre.

Ho usato i colori acrilici della Maimeri (comprati al Brico). Di alcuni colori sono stata più soddisfatta che di altri. Il giallo è quello con la coprenza peggiore. Anche dopo tre-quattro passate si vedeva l'azzurro sottostante. Ho dovuto passarci sopra il bianco, che invece è piuttosto coprente, e poi ancora il giallo.

Anche il rosso non è molto coprente. Il grigiazzurro è il colore più coprente, il rosa e il blu sono mediamente coprenti.

In the above photos you can see the process. I started with flat colors, then clouds (made with a sponge), then lights and shadows.

I used the acrylic colors by Maimeri (bought at Brico). Some colors satisfied me more than others. Yellow was the one with the worst coverage. Even after three or four coats I could see the blue below. I had to do it over with a coat of white, which was rather opaque, and then again with yellow.

The red wan't very too. The blueish gray was the most opaque color, while pink and blue were moderately opaque.

Per ultimi ho fatto i contorni, usando un colore più scuro dell'area contornata e solo in pochi casi il nero per un risultato più leggero.

Sono molto soddisfatta del mio lavoro!

Lastly I drew the outlines, using a darker color than that of the contoured areas and black in only a few cases for a lighter result.

I am very satisfied with my work!

Come avere una cover per smartphone sempre diversa (e foglie e pettirossi)

Il mio vecchio cellulare mi stava lasciando, così mio marito me ne ha comprato un altro come regalo anticipato dei 30 anni.

Stavolta ho optato per una cover trasparente. L'ho scelta per provare una nuova idea per avere un cellulare sempre diverso: infilare fra lo smartphone e la cover un disegno.

In questo caso ne ho fatto apposta uno a tema autunnale. Mi piacerebbe anche provare foglie e fiori secchi.

My old cell phone was breaking down, so my husband bought me another as an early 30-year-old gift.

This time I choose a transparent cover. I wanted it to try a new idea to have an ever changin mobile phone: to insert a drawing between the smartphone and the cover.

In this case, I did an autumnal themed one. I would also like to try dried leaves and flowers.

In questo periodo sono anche riuscita a fare due paia di orecchini con la shrink plastic, uno con delle foglie e uno con degli uccellini.

During this time I also managed to make two pairs of earrings with shrink plastic, one with leaves and one with birds.

Come accorciare temporaneamente una collana/How to temporarily shorten a necklace

A volte si ha una collana di per sé bellissima che sarebbe perfetta per un outfit se non fosse per la lunghezza. Ecco un trucco semplicissimo per accorciare collane in maniera reversibile.

Basta passare un nastro sottile intonato allo stile e ai colori della collana fra le maglie della catena all'altezza a cui volete fermarla.

Sometimes you have a very beautiful necklace that would be perfect for an outfit if it were not for the length. Here is a simple trick to shorten necklaces in a reversible way.

Just pass a thin ribbon that suits the style and colors of the necklace between the chain links at the height at which you want to stop it.

Poi annodate il nastro. Ecco fatto! Le varianti possibili sono infinite!

Centrotavola a dinosauro/Dinosaur centerpieces

Nella mia foga di rendere più personale il mio matrimonio, ho deciso di fare io tutti i centrotavola, i menù e il tableau mariage (non fatelo, è un consiglio).

Ad ogni tavolo ho assegnato un diverso dinosauro, che ho ripreso sul retro dei menù di ogni tavolo, con una piccola spiegazione sul dinosauro, la sua epoca e le sue abitudini, e sul tableau per aiutare gli ospiti a capire il loro tavolo.

Following my foolish plan to make my wedding more personal, I decided to make all the centerpiece, menus and the tableau mariage (don't do it, it's an advice).

To each table I assigned a different dinosaur, which I also printed on the back of the menus of each table, with a little explanation of the dinosaur, its era and its habits, and on the tableau to help guests understand which was their table.

In questo post vi spiego come realizzare dei centrotavola come i miei, nell'eventualità che vi venga l'idea di una festa a tema dinosauro (ma questo metodo, con le debite variazioni, si può usare per praticamente qualunque tema).

Sembra scontato, ma non lo è: per prima cosa bisogna scegliere i dinosauri. Io ho scelto tirannosauro, spinosauro, kulindadromeus, sharovipteryx, dracorex e tontianlong. Ho guardato un po' di immagini in rete e ho disegnato una sagoma semplificata per ciascun tipo.

In this post I'm going to explain how to make centerpieces like mine, in the event that you want to do a dinosaur-themed party (but, with the suitable variations you can use this method to fit almost every theme).

It seems banal, but it is not: first you have to choose the dinosaurs. I have choose tyrannosaurus, spinosaurus, kulindadromeus, sharovipteryx, dracorex and tontianlong. I looked at some images on the net and drew a simplified template for each type.

Ho riportato la sagoma su cartoncino e l'ho tagliato. Per ogni centrotavola servono due sagome da sovrapporre. Sull'esterno ho scritto in corsivo il nome di quattro ospiti, due da una parte e due dall'altra.

I put the templates on cardboard and cut it. For each centerpiece I cut two paper dinoasaurs that I overlapped. On the outside I wrote in italics the name of four guests, two on one side and two on the other.

Ho inserito uno stuzzicadenti lungo fra le due sagome e una buona quantità di vinavil, mettendo poi a seccare il segnaposto sotto pressione.

I inserted a long toothpick between the two cutouts and a good amount of vinyl glue, then I let the place card dry under a weight.

Pronto il primo segnaposto... se ne fa un altro, fino ad esaurimento.

When the first place card was ready... I made another, until I finished.

Per completare l'opera, ho comprato tanti vasetti di aromi quanti centrotavola mi servivano, ho ricoperto ciascun vaso con pizzo ereditato dalla nonna di mio marito, fissato con un nastro, e ci ho piantato il segnaposto a dinosauro.

To complete the work, I bought as many jars of herbs as the place cards, I covered each in lace I inherited from my husband's grandmother, fastened it with a ribbon, and I planted the dinosaur placeholder in it.

Il risultato è piaciuto moltissimo, vari bambini si sono messi a collezionare i vari tipi di segnaposto e menù e i vasetti, a fine pasto, sono diventati un regalo per gli ospiti.

The result was really appreciated, and many children collected the various types of place cards and menus and, at the end of the meal, the jars become a gift for the guests.

Animali coprimacchia: balena e ape/Stain hiding animals: whale and bee

All'ultimo swap party avevo preso ben due capi macchiati, una maglietta e un cardigan, con l'idea di modificarli in modo da coprire le macchie.

La maglietta rossa con lo scollo sulla schiena aveva una macchia nerastra sul davanti che ho coperto con l'ennesimo timbro a scheletro di balena (prim'o poi magari la mania mi passerà...).

At the last  swap party I took two stained pieces of clothing, a shirt and a cardigan, with the idea of alterating them to cover the stains.

The red shirt with a low cut on the back had a blackish stain on the front that I covered with one more skeleton whale stamp (before or after, maybe, I will get over this obsession...).

Il cardigan beige, invece, aveva una macchia di candeggina che ho trasformato nelle ali di un'apina ricamata. Non è un ricamo stupendo, ma secondo me se non lo si guarda troppo da vicino l'effetto non è niente male.

The beige cardigan, instead, had a bleach stain that I turned in the wings of an embroidered bee. It is not a beautiful embroidery, but I think that, if you don't look at it too closely, the effect is not bad at all.

Le partecipazioni/Wedding invites

Oggi è arrivata ufficialmente la primavera!

Il mio matrimonio è sempre più vicino e l'organizzazione procede (mi piacerebbe dire "inesorabile", ma sarebbe più realistico "fra casini e imprevisti").

Oggi vi racconterò delle partecipazioni.

Seguendo l'esempio della mia amica Prociona, io e la Pelosa Metà abbiamo fatto un sito in cui dare per esteso tutte le informazioni sul nostro matrimonio: ci abbiamo messo il luogo della cerimonia e quello del ricevimento con tanto di mappa e modulo di partecipazione, il programma del viaggio in Cina e le informazioni per poter contribuire e anche una pagina dedicata a noi, con qualche foto e la richiesta di un dress code informale o bizzarro e, naturalmente, una serie di disegni a tema dinosauri che ho realizzato per l'occasione.

Il sito, rispetto alle partecipazioni cartacee, permette di aggiornare costantemente le informazioni e può essere usato anche dopo l'evento per caricare le foto del matrimonio e/o del viaggio di nozze, per mantenere gli ospiti aggiornati.

Per creare il sito abbiamo usato l'ottimo www.wix.com che ha già vari template adatti alla bisogna e comunque customizzabili (e mi è piaciuto anche perché ha vari template di siti per matrimoni con foto di coppie omosessuali).

L'idea iniziale era di mandare inviti elettronici per maggior tutela dell'ambiente e del nostro portafoglio. Amici e parenti ci hanno poi convinto a fare anche le partecipazioni cartacee, soprattutto per i tecnologicamente inabili.

Sono emerse varie idee interessanti poi scartate, per esempio realizzarle usando un timbro (nel caso l'idea vi piaccia e siate di Milano vi consiglio il timbrificio Rossi in via Vitruvio 8).

Alla fine abbiamo scelto di fare cartoncini fronte-retro da un terzo di A4 (la dimensione perfetta per una busta standard), realizzati tramite un'economica stampa in bianco e nero, ma su carta di lusso (su cui la dimensione del biglietto ci ha permesso di risparmiare).

Per prima cosa ho preparato con Indesign la grafica dei cartoncini (Indesign è il programma più professionale, ma se ne possono usare tanti altri).

Ho comprato la carta da Paper & People, in via Friuli 32 (vicino alla metropolitana Lodi) dopo avere chiesto alla copisteria in cui volevo farla stampare la grammatura massima consentita dalla stampa fronte-retro (nel mio caso 280g). Ho dovuto prendere 3 pacchi da 4 fogli A3 per un totale di 15€.

Dopodiché ho portato carta e chiavetta da Cazzamali Srl - Centro Stampa, in via Bazzini 3 (vicinissimo alla metropolitana Piola), che mi ha stampato e tagliato i cartoncini ad un prezzo davvero irrisorio.
Infine ho comprato su Amazon delle normali buste bianche (partendo dal presupposto che in genere la gente butta la busta e tiene l'invito), ho creato un timbro a forma di impronte di dinosauro con cui decorarle e ho composto le partecipazioni.
Il risultato è stato ottimo e il costo piuttosto basso. A posteriori ho scoperto che avremmo potuto risparmiare ulteriormente prendendo set già fatti di cartoncini e buste su Amazon e facendoli stampare, ma sono comunque molto soddisfatta del risultato.

Today Spring officially started!
My wedding is getting closer and the organization proceeds (I'd like to say "flawlessly", but "with problems and contingencies" is more realistic).
Today I will tell you about the invites.
Following the example of my friend Prociona, my Hairy Half and I made a site in which we wrote all the information about our wedding: the place of the ceremony and the reception complete with maps and registration forms, the program of our trip to China, and the information to be able to contribute to its payment and even a page dedicated to us, with photos and the request of a casual or quirky dress code, and, of course, a series of themed dinosaurs drawings that I made for the occasion.
The site, compared to paper invites, enables to constantly update the information and can also be used after the event to upload photos of the wedding and/or the honeymoon, to keep guests updated.
To create the site we used the excellent www.wix.com which already had various templates suited to the task and customizable (I liked it also because it has various templates of weddings sites with photos of same-sex couples).
The initial idea was to send electronic invitations for greater protection of the environment and our wallet. Friends and relatives then persuaded us to make paper invites too, especially for the technologically incapacitated.
We had several interesting ideas then discarded, for example, to make them using a stamp.
In the end we chose to do two-sided cards of the size of a third of A4 (the perfect size for a standard envelope), printed in cheap black and white, but on luxury paper (on which the invitation size allowed to save money).
First I prepared the graphic of the cards with Indesign (Indesign is the most professional program, but you can use many others).
I bought the paper in a specialized shop after asking the copy centre where I wanted it to be printed for the maximum weight allowed by duplex printing (in my case 280g).
Then I brought the paper to the copy centre, which printed and cut the cards at a really low price.
Finally I bought plain white envelopes (assuming that usually people throw away the envelope and keeps the invite) on Amazon, I created a stamp in the shape of dinosaur footprints with which to decorate them and I made up the invites.
The result was excellent and fairly cheap. Afterwards, I discovered that we could save even more by buying cards and envelopes sets on Amazon and printing them, but I'm very satisfied with the result anyway.

Come fare un Asticello fuffoso/Fluffy Bowtruckle Tutorial

Per Natale, visto che gli era piaciuto molto in "Animali Fantastici e dove trovarli", ho deciso di fabbricare per il mio fidanzato un asticello. Ho usato una tecnica semplicissima:

MATERIALE:

- scovolini da pipa verde chiaro, grandi (io li avevo già sagomati. Si trovano sicuramente su internet, ma mi pare di averli visti da Tiger)

- due perline nere tonde

- ago e filo

- forbici

- coppia di foglie di plastica o stoffa o pezzo di tessuto con cui fabbricarle (io ho usato del pile che avevo già e non sfilaccia)

For Christmas, as he loved it in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", I decided to make a bowtruckle for my boyfriend. I used a simple technique:

MATERIAL:

- big light green pipe cleaners pipe (I had already shaped ones. You definitely can find them on the internet, but I think I have seen them at Tiger)

- two black round beads

- needle and thread

- scissors

- a couple of plastic or fabric leaves or piece of fabric with which to make them (I used pile as I already had it and it doesn't fray)

Ho ritagliato nel pile una coppia di foglie unite alla base.

Ho tenuto uno degli scovolini come corpo, tagliandone via 1/4. Ho tagliato a metà il secondo scovolino. Ho avvolto i due pezzi risultanti intorno al primo scovolino a circa 1/3 e 2/3 della lunghezza per creare le due braccia e le tre gambe dell'asticello.

I cut in the pile a pair of leaves joined at the base.

I choose one of the pipe cleaners as a body, cutting off 1/4 of it. I cut in half the second pipe cleaner. I wrapped the two resulting pieces around the first cleaner at about 1/3 and 2/3 of its length to create the two arms and the three legs of the bowtruckle.

Ho fissato le foglie alla cima della testa piegando la parte superiore dello scovolino. Ho recuperato il quarto di scovolino che avevo eliminato nella prima fase, l'ho tagliato in due e l'ho avvolto all'estremità delle braccia per fare le dita.

Infine ho cucito le due perline alla testa per fare gli occhi.

I fixed the leaves at the top of the head by folding the top of the cleaner. I picked the 1/4 piece that I cut off in the first stage, I cut it in two and I wrapped these halves at the end of the arms to make the fingers.

Finally I sewed the two beads to the head to make the eyes.

Cappellini di ghianda/Acorn caps

Durante la mia gita sul sentiero naturalistico dello Spaccasassi, ho raccolto un po' di cappellini di ghiande con cui fare accessori, ispirata dalle creazioni di Dentro l'Arcobaleno.

Per prima cosa li ho lavati molto bene con l'aiuto di un vecchio spazzolino.

During my walk on the Spaccasassi trail, I picked up some acorn caps with which to make accessories, inspired by the creations of Dentro l'Arcobaleno.

First I washed them very well with the help of an old toothbrush.

Poi li ho verniciati dentro e fuori con dello smalto per le unghie trasparente.

Then I painted them inside and out with transparent nail polish.

Ho scelto tre cappellini che invece ho verniciato all'interno con smalto colorato. Ho dovuto dare due passate.

I chose three caps that instead I painted on the inside with coloured polish. I had to do two coats.

Una volta che i cappellini si sono asciugati li ho forati con un ago da lana, ruotandolo lentamente e martellandolo ogni tanto con un peso. 

Once the caps dried I drilled them with a wool needle, turning it slowly and occasionally hammering it with a weight.

Per la prima collana ho usato i cappellini smaltati internamente, fermati all'interno con una perlina d'oro. Non sono convintissima del risultato, può darsi che smonterò tutto e farò qualcosa di diverso.

For the first necklace I used the coloured caps, stopped on the inside with a gold bead. I'm not entrerely convinced by the result, I may dismantle everything and make something different.

Per la seconda invece ho ricostruito una ghianda usando una grossa perla di legno verde e appendendo un ciondolo a forma di chiave all'anellino con cui l'ho bloccata.

For the second one I rebuilt an acorn using a large green wood pearl and hanging a key pendant to the loop with which I blocked it.

Sandali con i pon pon/Pom pom sandals

Buon ferragosto! Lo festeggiate in qualche modo? Io ho in programma una cena speciale con la mia famiglia.

Per l'occasione dopo tanto tempo pubblico un tutorial per decorare dei sandali con lacci sottili. Quest'estate si vedono ovunque scarpe ornate in maniera coloratissima con pon pon, nappine e ciondoli. Me ne sono innamorata (pon pon e colori per me sono irresistibili) e ho deciso di creare la mia versione. Con il materiale giusto si tratta di un lavoro facile, veloce e di sicuro effetto.

For the occasion, after too long without diys, here's a tutorial to decorate sandals with thin laces. This summer colorful shoes devorated with pom poms, tassels and pendants are everywhere. I fell in love with them (pom poms and colours are irresistible for me) and I decided to create my own version. With the right material it is easy, fast and highly effective.

In sostanza si tratta dell'applicazione ad un paio di sandali di questo mio tutorial per decorare con pon pon scarpe con le stringhe: ho infilzato i singoli pon pon con del filo d'ottone arrotolando poi un'estremità con le pinze in modo che rimanessero bloccati. 

Ho tagliato l'altra estremità facendo sporgere circa un centimetro e mezzo di filo che ho arrotolato con le pinze per creare un asola in cui infilare le stringhe. Allo stesso modo si possono creare anellini di filo metallico per ciondoli e nappine (trovate il mio tutorial per creare una nappina qui). Se scegliete un filo metallico morbido potrete aprire gli anelli con le dita per mettere e togliere le decorazioni più comodamente e adattarle ad ogni look.

A questo punto non resta che infilare le decorazioni nei lacci secondo lo schema che preferite.

In essence it consists in applying to a pair of sandals my tutorial to decorate sneakers with pom poms: I skewered the single pom poms with brass wire rolling the end with pliers so that they remained blocked.

I cut the other end about a centimeter and a half from the pom pom and with the pliers I created a loop where to insert the laces.

Similarly, you can create wire loops for the pendants and tassels (you can find my tutorial to create a tassel here). If you choose a soft wire you will be able to open the loops with your bare fingers to change the decorations easily.

At this point you just have to string the decorations into the laces according to your taste.  

Camicia da uomo --> Top + Gonna/Man's shirt --> Top + Skirt

Alla fine ho scelto la terza e più versatile opzione, ovvero fare una gonna corta con la parte superiore, e con la parte inferiore un top corto.

In the end I chose the third and most versatile option, that was make a short skirt with the upper part, and a short top with the bottom.

Ho tagliato la parte superiore della lunghezza delle maniche e ho fatto una gonna seguendo lo stesso procedimento che ho usato in questo post.

I cut the top part at the length of the sleeves and I made a skirt following the same method I used in this post.

Ho tagliato i lati della parte avanzata perché risultasse un top della giusta larghezza del mio torace. Poi ho aggiunto un bottone (a forma di stella!) e fatto due asole.

I cut the sides of the leftover part to make it the right width for my chest. After this I added a (star shaped!) button and made two buttonholes.

Ho deciso di tenere la parte arrotondata verso l'alto e usare i ritagli per fare delle spalline e trasformarlo in una canottiera lunga fino alla vita, la lunghezza perfetta.

I decided to keep the rounded side up and use the trimmings to make straps and turn it into a waist long tank top, exactly the lenght I wanted.

Ed ecco il risultato finale! Forse aggiusterò ancora un pochino la larghezza del top, ma in linea di massima sono davvero soddisfatta!

And here is the final result! Maybe I'll work on the top's width a bit more, bit in general I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Balena: ricamo su maglione/Whale: embroidery on a jumper

Non so se le balene contino come pesce d'aprile, visto che sono mammiferi. In ogni caso fingerò di fare un post a tema mostrandovi la balena che ho ricamato su di un vecchio maglione.

Not sure if whales can count as April Fool's joke, since they look like fishes but are mammals. Anyway I'll pretend to do a themed post (the more because this day's jokes in Italy are called "pesce d'aprile" that means "April's fish") showing the whale I embroidered on an old sweater.

Il maglione in questione è di cotone oversize da uomo, un po' rovinato, trovato in offerta su di una bancarella dell'usato anni fa. Visto che non lo mettevo da un pezzo, avevo già provato a modificarlo per farmelo piacere di più, con un'applicazione in pile a forma di gabbiano. Ma non aveva funzionato. A posteriori mi sono accorta che per un risultato migliore un'applicazione non dovrebbe mai essere di un materiale più pesante dell'indumento a cui viene cucita.

The sweater in question is an oversized men's cotton one, a bit ruined, found on offer on a second hand clothing stall years ago. Since I didn't wore it for a while, I already tried to modify it with a gull-shaped pile application hoping to wear it more. But it didn't work. In retrospect I realized that for best results an application should never be of a heavier material than the fabric on which it is sewn.

Visto che sto tentando di fare pulizia nel mio armadio, ho dovuto scegliere se dare via il maglione o provare di nuovo a salvarlo e ho scelto la seconda opzione. 

Per prima cosa ho staccato l'applicazione a gabbiano. Per un nuovo disegno ho optato per del filo da ricamo azzurro e bianco, che ho usato con un punto catenella perché mi permetteva di rendere il contorno molto più spesso e si armonizzava con le maglie del maglione.

Since I'm trying to clean up in my closet, I had to choose whether to give the sweater away or try to save it again, and I chose the second option.

First I removed the seagull application. For a new drawing I opted for blue and white embroidery floss, and I used a chain stitch because it allowed me to make the outline thicker and harmonized well with the pullover's links.

Come soggetto ho deciso per una balena, che è il mio animale preferito e quindi è sempre una scelta sicura, soprattutto su di un maglione che ha già qualcosa di marinaresco.

As for the subject I decided for a whale, which is my favorite animal, and so it is always a safe choice, especially on a sweater that alreasy has a nautical feeling.
