Shift, Swift, Terminal (Kathy Reichs)

"Shift" e "Swift" sono due racconti brevi di Kathy Reichs e di suo figlio Brendan, che fanno parte della serie young adult Virals, che parla di un gruppo di adolescenti nerd dotati di superpoteri che hanno acquisito per colpa di un virus sperimentale. Avevo già recensito i primi tre "Virals", "Segreti" e "Il Codice", qui, qui e qui.
"Shift" e "Swift" sono due racconti brevi del 2013, crossover con la famosa serie Bones della Reichs, che ha per protagonista Temperance Brennan, l'antropologa forense zia della protagonista di Virals, Tory.
"Shift" va letto fra il secondo e il terzo libro. C'è un furto nell'istituzione scientifica in cui lavora il padre di Tory. Viene chiesto di indagare a Temperance Brennan, che è passata a trovare i suoi familiari, ma Tory è decisa a batterla sul tempo. Questo racconto è interessante perché ogni capitoletto è raccontato dal punto di vista di un personaggio diverso.

"Shift" and "Swift" are two short stories by Kathy Reichs and her son Brendan, that are part of the young adult series Virals, which is about a group of nerdy teenagers with superpowers they acquired because of an experimental virus. "Shift" and "Swift" are two 2013 short stories, and are crossovers with the series Bones by Reichs, whose main character Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, is the aunt of the protagonist of Virals, Tory.
"Shift" should be read between the second and third books. There is a theft in the scientific institution where Tory's father work. Temperance Brennan, who went to visit her family, is asked to investigate but Tory is determined to beat her. This story is interesting because each short chapter is told from a different character's point of view.


"Swift", invece, è visto completamente dal punto di vista di Tory. E' carino perché è ambientato al ComiCon, ma per il resto, anche se è carino non è imperdibile. Ancora una volta Tory vuole battere la zia sul tempo in un'indagine riguardo ad un furto.

"Swift", instead, completely told from Tory's point of view. It's nice because it is set at Comicon, but for the rest, even if it is not bad it is not a fundamental part of the series. Tory wants to beat her aunt again regarding an investigation about a theft.

"Terminal" è un libro del 2015 e dovrebbe essere l'ultimo della serie. Finalmente viene analizzata a fondo la questione dei superpoteri e delle loro conseguenze.
I nuovi avversari dei Virals sono i più pericolosi finora perché sanno del loro segreto. Nonostante questo sono quelli che ho trovato meno convincenti.
Allo stesso modo la questione dei rapporti interpersonali viene risolta, ma in maniera prevedibile e riproponendo una situazione che si era già vista nei libri precedenti con personaggi diversi.
Anche il colpo di scena finale è soddisfacente, ma ha qualcosa di forzato.
Avevo sperato di più dal capitolo finale della serie, adesso mi rimane solo "Spike", un racconto breve ambientato dopo gli avvenimenti dell'ultimo romanzo. Mi piacerebbe leggere anche "Shock"che invece è un prequel alla saga e racconta l'incontro fra i protagonisti.
Nonostante "Terminal" non fosse all'altezza delle mie aspettative, promuovo a pieni voti tutta la saga e la consiglio senz'altro.

"Terminal" is a 2015 book and it's the last of the series. Finally, the issue of the superpowers and their consequences is analyzed in depth.
The new opponents of the Virals are the most dangerous ever because they know their secret. Despite this, they are the ones that I found less convincing.
Likewise the question of the interpersonal relations is resolved, but in a predictable vay and proposing again a situation tof the previous books with different characters.
The final twist is satisfactory, but somehow forced.
I hoped for more from the final chapter of the series, now there remains only "Spike", a short story set after the events of the last novel. I'd also like to read "Shock", which is a prequel to the saga and tells the encounter between the protagonists.
Despite "Terminal" was not up to my expectations, I loved the whole saga and I strongly recommend it.

Segreti - Virals/Seizure Virals (Kathy Reichs)

Segreti, pubblicato nel 2011, è il secondo libro della serie young adult Virals, di Katy Reichs (ho recensito il primo qui). E' strutturato in modo che per goderlo appieno bisogna aver letto il primo.

In questo secondo episodio della serie, Tory e i suoi amici si ritrovano sulle tracce di un tesoro pirata. Personalmente non riesco a non apprezzare la combinazione di young adult e pirati, e in questo caso l'ho trovata particolarmente ben riuscita, tanto più in quanto i presupposti per l'accoppiata non erano dei dei migliori. Ma anche perché Anne Bonny, la piratessa il cui tesoro è al centro dell'enigma, è un personaggio realmente esistito, di cui leggendo il libro si scopre la storia.

Pur avendo una struttura molto simile a quella del primo romanzo e conservandone i punti forti e i punti deboli, questo secondo volume riesce a non esserne la bieca ripetizione e a coinvolgere e stupire. Secondo me ha un unico vero difetto aggiuntivo: ho avuto l'impressione che in vari punti si potesse risolvere la trama in maniera molto più logica facendo fotografare con il cellulare (che hanno sempre con loro) i manufatti antichi ai protagonisti invece di farglieli rubare.

Anche questo volume, oltre al mistero, dà abilmente in pasto al lettore una serie di svolte nella vita della protagonista, non abbastanza per soddisfarlo, ma sufficienti a incuriosirlo e invogliarlo all'acquisto del libro successivo.

Riesce ad essere all'altezza del primo e forse a superarlo in quanto, sebbene completo, Virals era chiaramente l'introduzione ad un progetto editoriale molto più esteso. Mi sono definitivamente appassionata alla serie.

Lo consiglio a tutti quelli che hanno apprezzato il primo libro.

Seizure, published in 2011, is the second book in the young adult series Virals by Katy Reichs (I reviewed the first here). It's structured so that to enjoy it fully you have to read the first before.

In this second episode of the series, Tory and her friends find themselves on the trail of a pirate treasure. Personally I always appreciate the combination of young adult and pirates, and in this case I found it particularly successful, especially since the conditions for the pairing were not the best. But also because Anne Bonny, the pirate whose treasure is at the center of the enigma, is an historical character, of which reading the book you can discover the story.

Despite having a structure that is very similar to that of the first novel and despite it has all the strengths and weaknesses of the firs, this second volume manages not to be a repetition of it and to engage and amaze the reader. In my opinion it only has one real flaw: I had the impression that at various points the plot could be resolved in a much more logical way with the protagonists taking pictures the ancient artifacts with their smartphones (that they always have with them) rather than stealing them.

As the first, this volume, in addition to the mystery, has a series of turns in the life of the protagonist, that are not enough to satisfy the reader, but enough to intrigue him and entice the purchase of the next one.

It matchs up with the first and perhaps overcomes it because, although complete, "Virals" was clearly the introduction to a much larger publishing project. I definitely got passionate about this series.

I recommend it to all those who enjoyed the first book.

Virals (Kathy Reichs)

Kathy Reichs è un'antropologa forense diventata famosa come scrittrice con la serie di romanzi gialli che vede protagonista Temperance Brennan (anche lei antropologa forense) e che ha ispirato la serie televisiva Bones. Virals, del 2010, è il suo primo romanzo young adult ed è collegato alla sua serie più celebre per il fatto che la protagonista, Tory Brennan, è la nipote di Temperance. E' il primo di una serie che per ora conta quattro libri pubblicati in patria e uno in lavorazione.

A inizio romanzo Tory è una quattordicenne che, in seguito alla morte della madre, viene affidata al padre che prima non conosceva, un biologo marino che lavora in un centro di ricerca su un'isoletta sperduta vicino a Charleston. Vivendo in un luogo isolato Tory si ritrova a fare amicizia con gli unici altri adolescenti del posto: Hiram,  ebreo grassottello con il gusto del pacchiano, Ben, bel taciturno che rivendica una discendenza dalla tribù indiana dei Sewee e Shelton, occhialuto nippoafroamericano fifone. Tutti sono figli di scienziati che lavorano per lo stesso centro di ricerca e con lei condividono la passione per la scienza e l'isolamento sociale nella prestigiosa scuola privata che possono permettersi solo grazie ai finanziamenti del centro.

Tory è una Mary Sue: è bella, intelligentissima, coraggiosa, ecc. In più ha l'hobby di cacciarsi nei guai risolvendo misteri un po'inquietanti che spesso hanno risvolti pericolosi e trascinandoci anche i suoi amici.

Nel primo libro il gruppo trova una targhetta militare arrugginita e, cercando di risalire al proprietario, si ritrovano coinvolti in un antico caso di omicidio e in esperimenti segreti inquietanti.

Tecnicamente il libro potrebbe essere autoconclusivo perché il mistero viene risolto, ma vengono lasciati alcuni fili di trama aperti che mettono una gran curiosità di leggere quello successivo.

L'ho trovato coinvolgente e piuttosto ben scritto. Nonostante siano presenti alcuni stereotipi degli young adult, sono ben rimacinati e la trama è elaborata e riesce a stupire. Perfino l'assurda Mary Suaggine della protagonista è ben bilanciata dagli altri personaggi e dal fatto che la sua narrazione in prima persona sia impregnata di ironia cinica un po'in stile noir (anche se a volte un po'forzata).

Oltre alla protagonista, non mi hanno convinto del tutto la struttura fissa delle frasi spezzettate e del colpo di scena a tutti i costi a fine capitolo, l'onnipresenza delle marche e un paio di soluzioni narrative (fra cui alcuni cambi di punto di vista), ma in definitiva lo promuovo con voti alti. Nel panorama sempre più di basso livello del genere è una perla.

Lo consiglio senz'altro agli appassionati di young adult che vogliono qualcosa di un po'meno fantasy e più scientifico (ma senza esagerare) e a chi vuole leggere un giallo con detective adolescenti (peraltro la protagonista ricorda molto Nancy Drew). E' adatto anche ad un pubblico piuttosto giovane perché non c'è sesso e la violenza è molto limitata.

Kathy Reichs is a forensic anthropologist who became famous as a writer with a series of detective novels starring Temperance Brennan (another forensic anthropologist) that inspired the TV series "Bones". "Virals", published in 2010, is her first young adult novel and is connected to her most famous series for the fact that the protagonist, Tory Brennan, is the grandson of Temperance. It's the first of a series that as for now consists of four books published in the U.S.A. and one in the writing.

At the beginning of the novel, Tory is a fourteen year old who, following the death of her mother, is entrusted to her father who she did not know before, a marine biologist who works at a research center on a remote island near Charleston. Living in an isolated place Tory finds herself making friends with the only other local teenagers: Hiram, a plump jew with a taste for flashy stuff, Ben, a laconic handsome boy claiming descent from the native american tribe of the Sewee and Shelton, a bespectacled asian-african-american wimp. All are sons of scientists working for the same research center and share with her a passion for science and the social isolation in the prestigious private school they can afford only thanks to funding from the center.

Tory is a Mary Sue: she is beautiful, intelligent, brave, and so on. Furthermore she has the hobby of getting into trouble solving mysteries that often have dangerous implications and dragging in them her friends.

In the first book the group finds a rusty military plate and, trying to trace the owner, the teens find themselves involved in an old murder case and in disturbing secret experiments.

Technically, the book could be self-contained because the mystery is solved in the volumet, but some threads are left open to make the reader curious to read the next one.

I found it engaging and quite well written. Although some stereotypes of young adult are present, they are well reshuffled and the plot is developed and manages to surprise the reader. Even the absurd Mary Sueing of the protagonist is well balanced by the other characters and by the fact that her first-person narrative is steeped in slightly cynical irony in noir style (although sometimes it seems forced).

In addition to the main character, I was not entirely convinced by  the fixed structure of the fragmented sentences and the plot twist at all costs at the end of every chapter, by the omnipresence of brands and by a couple of narrative solutions (including some point of view changes) but I pass it with high grades. In view of the increasingly low level of the genre it is a pearl.

I would definitely recommend it to fans of young adult who want something a little less fantasy and more scientific (but not too much) and to people who wants to read a mistery starring teenagers (the protagonist resembles Nancy Drew a lot). It's also suitable for a rather young audience because there is no sex and violence is very limited.
