Birthday trip to London: day 4

January the 7th, the fourth day of my birthday trip to London, was my thirtieth birthday.
In the morning I finally managed to visit Sir Soane House, the house museum of the homonymous architect of the 19th century, preserved exactly as it was when in use. It's a house crowded with all kinds of antique objects, especially Greek and Roman vases and bas-reliefs, medieval sculptural fragments, Peruvian vases, Chinese pottery and even the alabaster sarcophagus of Seti I.
These are combined, in an oddly pleasing and coherent combination, with nineteenth-century paintings and architectural drawings and models by the owner.
Unfortunately I can't show you anything because it's forbidden to take photos inside, but I suggest to search for some images on the internet.
In the house there are practically no explanations on the exhibited objects, so I bought the cheaper version of the printed guide to understand what I saw, but I was not enthusiastic about it.
If you understand English it may be worth following a guided tour, we met one and it looked very nice.
The upper floor is only accessible on certain days and times. Admission is free.

We then moved to Baker Street, from which we would have to take a bus in the early afternoon. Since we had some time, we went to the 221b, where Arthur Conan Doyle imagined the house of Sherlock Holmes to be and where now stands The Sherlock Holmes Museum. We also went to see the statue dedicated to the famous investigator near the subway exit.

We ate there at Yo!Sushi, because I was tempted by the idea of the conveyor belt, which can no longerbe found in Milan. The food, however, was not incredible, apart from the snowcrab uramaki, and the prices were not cheap (moreover we had to pay for the water, which in London is strange). In two we spent 40,45£.

Then... we left to visit the Warner Bros Studios where the Harry Potter movies were shot!!! The tickets must be bought before the visit because they are not available on site and unfortunately the only tickets we found, although trying to buy them more than a month before, were through an agency, Golden Tours, and at a strange hour, from 17 to 20.
The tours are a rip-off because they raise the price a lot by focusing on bus transportation, but from London you can reach the Studios quite comfortably by taking a train to Watford Junction from London Euston (20 minutes journey) or Birmingham New Street (1 hour journey) and from there a shuttle (15 minutes). Another negative aspect of the tours is that buses usually have fixed hours that are a big limitation because it takes at least three hours to visit the Studios well. In addition there was advertises that you could watch the movies during the trip, but (as you can see from the photo) there were only two small screens.

The exhibition was very rich from the beginning and as we entered, they gave us passports of the museum in which there were games and spaces where to print stamps in various places.

It was an aesthetically wonderful experience. In my opinion the exhibition is interesting for adults and children, fans and lay as well. There are costumes, reconstructions of various sets, explanations of special effects, very detailed props, but there also interactive experiences, and much more. The audio guide is highly recommended, at it is full of extra content (including many videos and drawings) and is available in various languages.

The start of the tour is spectacular, with the doors of Hogwarts opening onto the Great Hall. When we visited the Studios, there was a winter/Christmas themed show and everything was even more magical. The movies sets were set up as in the parts of film set on Christmas, complete with special effects and we were shown how the fake snow was made.

Fra l'altro tutti i dipinti erano veri!

After the Great Hall we passed into a huge area, where you could see lots of sets. One of the most beautiful was the Gryffindor common room. The details were incredible, I never noticed that the tapestry was "The Lady and the Unicorn" (although it is my favorite medieval tapestry), nor that there was a portrait of Professor Mc Granitt when she was young! Among other things, all the paintings were true!

At the center of the first section was a huge cage full of props and others were scattered among the various sets. I was stunned by the quality of the work and the amount of details.

Some of the sets impressed me particularly, like Dumbledore's office, with cabinets full of mysterious magical devices, the Potions class, with cauldrons stirring on their own and the Weasley house, with dishes that washed themselves, knitting needles that knitted by themselves and the ticking clock.

Even the costumes were very beautiful and detailed: close to those of the quidditch teams, there were various green screen stations where to try how to fly on broom.
Unfortunately at that point we had spent too much time looking at all the possible objects, seeing all the extra videos and we realized that in order to see everything before the bus left, we would have to hurry up, so we left that part off.

The next area was a decidedly atmospheric reconstruction of the Forbidden Forest set, where there was a Buckbeak robot.

Then we arrived to the Hogwarts Express station, with the train, where every car replicated that of Harry, Ron and Hermione in a different school year and there was also a candy store (of course there were various stores of expensive themed gadgets in various places).

Then we went to a cafeteria where we absolutely wanted to try butterbeer. It was strange, very sweet and sparkling with a foam that tasted like it was made of marshmallows. Some found it disgusting, I think it was neither good nor evil.
After the cafeteria there was an outdoor area with the Knight Bus, the bridge of the last film, the Privet Drive house (the room full of letters was wonderful) and more.

Then we passed through Diagon Alley, which was really beautiful, with extremely detailed objects in the windows.

L'ultima parte era dedicata a disegni preparatori e modellini.

The last part was dedicated to preparatory drawings and models. It was very beautiful, but at this point we were running to catch the bus.

The visit ended inside Olivander's... and of course with a store of expensive junk.

We had dinner on the bus with sandwiches, snacks and some dark salt chocolate from Pret A Manger. I discovered potato chips-style baked kale, which I loved (so much so that I brought a couple of packs to Italy make my friends try it, but someone loved it and some other hated it).

My thirtieth birthday ended with an encouraging view of modern UK: a fish and chips that made special discounts for Ramadan.

Trentesimo compleanno: i regali/Thirtieth birthday: the presents

Almost two months after my thirtieth birthday, I finally manage to show you the gifts I received.

My parents, since my glasses were all scratched, gave me a new, very cool pair by Rodenstock.
My mother, who just came back from Patagonia, also brought me some souvenirs: a book about Darwin, a wooden portrait of Darwin (is it easy to understand that Darwin is one of my heroes?) and alfajores, local sweets.

Mia zia mi ha regalato uno spazzolino a forma di balena, dei calzini e dei soldi con cui ho comprato un abbonamento a "Le Scienze", gli ultimi due libri della saga di Fairyland di Catherynne M. Valente, "The Boy Who Lost Fairyland" e "The Girl Who Raced Fairyland All the Way Home" e, alla fiera del libro usato,  "Lo Zoablatore" e "Appunti di Geofantastica", entrambi illustrati da Sergio Olivotti, e scritti rispettivamente da Olivotti e da Gianluca Caporaso.

My aunt gave me a whale-brush, socks and money with which I bought a subscription to "Science", the last two books of the Fairyland saga by Catherynne M. Valente, "The Boy Who Lost Fairyland" and "The Girl Who Raced Fairyland All the Way Home" and, at the second hand book fair, "Lo Zoablatore" and "Appunti di Geofantastica", both illustrated by Sergio Olivotti, and written respectively by Olivotti and Gianluca Caporaso.

My uncle doesn't give birthday presents, but this time he wanted to give me a pom pom mirror-keychain.

My friend Prociona gave me, with a beautiful card and the most beautiful gift wrapper in the world, the 2018 calendar of the New Yorker, with a cartoon for every day of the year.

My friend Clyo gave me some delicious Chinese milk candies with cute graphics, White Rabbits.

My friend Bi, knowing of my passion for whales, gave me a themed gift: a cup with a wave pattern and a spoon shaped like a whale, "Un libro sulle balene" by Andrea Antinori and a notebook with a pattern of whale with sweaters.

My friend Jules gave me the most beautiful bag I've ever owned, dedicated to Luna of Sailor Moon, seriously nerd and at the same time sober and almost elegant.

My friend Ade gave me "Anna", a novel by Niccolò Ammaniti and a colorful necklace (she had also bought me a comic book, but I already had it and she had to change it. And the fun thing is that on Christmas I gave her a book that she already had and I had to change it).

My friend Anna gave me two beautiful bowls by Baci Milano and she also handed me down some old Japanese fashion magazines.

My friend Donna Camèl gave me a very cool table lamp.
