Song of the sea

"Song of the Sea" è un cartone animato irlandese della Cartoon Saloon, diretto da Tom Moore.
La storia è ambientata nel 1981 e racconta del difficile rapporto fra due fratelli, Ben e la piccola Saoirse, che a sei anni ancora non parla, dopo la scomparsa della loro mamma. Su questo tema si innestano i tradizionali miti irlandesi, che giocano una parte importantissima nella trama. Incontriamo così le selkie, donne che si trasformano in foche, il gigante Mac Lir, le fate e la strega gufo Macha.
La storia è molto bella. Il tema non è particolarmente originale, ma è trattato bene e riesce a commuovere. In più è reso davvero interessante da tutti i riferimenti alla cultura tradizionale dell'Irlanda.
Le musiche di Bruno Coulais e del gruppo di musica irlandese Kíla sono bellissime.
Anche i disegni sono splendidi, e sono ancora più interessanti perché sono realizzati con metodi tradizionali (anche se ammetto che degli stessi produttori mi erano piaciuti ancora di più i disegni di "The secret of Kells").
Insomma, consigliatissimo!

"Song of the Sea" is an Irish animated film by Cartoon Saloon, directed by Tom Moore.
The story is set in 1981 and tells of the difficult relationship between two brothers, Ben and Saoirse, a small girl, who despite being six years old still does not talk, after their mother passed away. On this theme are inserted traditional Irish myths, that play an important part in the plot. We meet selkies, women who turn into seals, the giant Mac Lir, the fairies and the owl witch Macha.
The story is very beautiful. The theme is not particularly original, but it is well treated and moving. Plus it is made really interesting by all the references to the traditional culture of Ireland.
The music by Bruno Coulais and the Irish music group Kíla are beautiful.
The drawings are beautiful, and are even more interesting because they are made using traditional methods (although I admit that by this producers I liked even more the drawings of "The secret of Kells").
In short, it is highly recommended!

The secret of Kells

"The secret of Kells" è un cartone animato indipendente del 2009 di prodotto da diversi studi di animazione di diverse nazionalità. Ha vinto vari premi ed è stato nominato a molti altri.
La storia è ambientata nel IX secolo in un'Irlanda messa a ferro e fuoco dalle invasioni vichinghe. Il protagonista è Brendan un monaco dodicenne che vive nell'abbazia di Kells. Suo zio, l'abate Cellach, pensa solo a fortificare l'abbazia perché possa resistere alle scorribande degli uomini del nord ed educa il nipote con severità. Ma a Kells arriva Fratello Aidan, un anziano miniatore scampato all'invasione del monastero di Iona, che custodisce uno splendido libro miniato. Brendan ne è affascinato e Aidan si dimostra disposto a prenderlo come apprendista. Per mostrarsene degno, Brendan infrangerà per la prima volta il divieto di suo zio di uscire dall'abbazia e si avventurerà di nascosto nella vicina foresta dove incontrerà Aisling, un essere misterioso.
La storia è molto bella, non scontata e a tratti commovente. In più rispetta l'ambientazione storica, cosa non scontata all'epoca del politically correct a tutti i costi (ci sono però un frate nero e un frate cinese). Nonostante l'ambientazione in un'abbazia, poi hanno molto più rilevanza per la storia le leggende irlandesi risalenti al paganesimo piuttosto che il cristianesimo.
Anche le musiche sono belle, ma il vero capolavoro di questo film è il comparto video, che riprende le miniature medievali in un tripudio di colori, forme intricate e personaggi che si muovono bidimensionalmente.
Assolutamente da non perdere!

"The Secret of Kells" is a 2009 independent animated film made by different animation studios of different nationalities. It won several awards and was nominated for many others.
The story is set in the ninth century in an Ireland set on fire by the Viking invasions. The protagonist is the twelve year old monk Brendan who lives in the Abbey of Kells. His uncle, the abbot Cellach, only thinks of fortifying the abbey to make it withstand the raids of northerners and educates his grandson harshly. But one day arrives to Kells Brother Aidan, a master miniaturist who escaped the invasion of the monastery of Iona, and is the guardian of a beautiful illuminated book. Brendan is fascinated by it and Aidan wants to take him on as an apprentice. To show he is worthy, Brendan will break for the first time the rule given by his uncle not to leave the abbey and willsneak into the nearby forest where he meets Aisling, a mysterious being.
The story is very beautiful, is not banal and is sometimes moving. It mostly respects the historical setting, that is not obvious in this time of political correctness at all costs (there are, however, a black and a Chinese monk). Despite being set in an abbey, for the story are much more important the Irish legends dating back to paganism than Christianity.
Even the music is beautiful, but the real masterpiece of this film is the art, which incorporates the medieval miniatures in a riot of colors, intricate shapes and characters that move in two dimensions.
A film not to miss!

The stag

The stag è una commedia irlandese del 2013 diretta da John Butler e scritta da lui con Peter McDonald. Il titolo è basato su un gioco di parole: in inglese addio al celibato infatti si dice stag party. Il film racconta l'addio al celibato del riluttante Fionnan, spedito a fare una gita in montagna con gli amici dalla sposa che temeva si imboscasse al suo addio al nubilato. Ma quello che dovrebbe essere un pacifico weekend di trekking, si trasforma in un incubo con l'arrivo del terrificante fratello della sposa...

Questo film ha qualcosa che non va: è troppo serio per essere un film comico e troppo scemo per essere un film serio. Il tutto con poco ritmo. Si salva solo per l'ottima prestazione degli attori, fra cui i fan riconosceranno Andrew Scott, che faceva la parte di Moriarty in Sherlock della BBC.

But what should be a peaceful weekend of hiking, turns into a terrifying nightmare with the arrival of the brother of the bride... 

This film has something wrong: it is too serious to be a comedy and too stupid to be a serious film. All with little rhythm. It's saved only by the excellent performance of the actors, including Andrew Scott who will be recognized by the fans as Moriarty in the BBC's Sherlock.

O'Connors (Verbania)

Mentre ero ospite di un amico vicino al lago Maggiore, ho avuto l'occasione di andare al pub irlandese O'Connors a Verbania. E' un pub dall'atmosfera accogliente, anche se non certo raffinata, e serve la vera birra Guinness.

Vi ho fotografato il menù. Vista l'illuminazione, la foto non è granché, ma è il massimo che sono riuscita a fare.

Oltre ad hamburger, carne, primi e pizze, ci sono anche dei piatti messicani. Noi ci siamo divisi in 5 un enorme piatto di nachos con carne, formaggio e jalapenos. Erano veramente buoni!

I panini sono deliziosi, sono fatti di pasta da pizza e cotti in forno a legna e quindi hanno un delizioso sapore affumicato. C'è pochissimo pane e sono pienissimi. Nessuno ce l'ha fatta a finire tutto.

Anche le patatine sono meravigliose, in particolare quelle tex-mex.

Sono abbastanza costosi (sui 15€), ma quantità e qualità giustificano il prezzo.

Io ho preso un risotto al castelmagno con cialda di parmigiano, veramente buono e veramente abbondante.

Primi e pizze hanno prezzi più bassi, ma non sono meno soddisfacenti.

Il pub offre anche serate speciali e musica dal vivo.

Irlanda: ostelli/Ireland: hostels

Backpackers D1 Hostel (Dublin)

Zona centrale, vicino alla stazione dei treni e dei bus e alle vie dello shopping. Bell'edificio, anche se piuttosto fatiscente. Tanti piani e niente ascensore. Stanze molto molto essenziali (di base non danno nemmeno la cartgienica) e non particolarmente esaltanti. Divieto di bere in ostello non rispettato nemmeno dal personale. A noi il personale ha fatto un sacco di pasticci mandandoci da un ostello all'altro (hanno un'altra sede nella stessa via), ma dipende anche con chi si capita. Cucina con attrezzatura poco confortevole e in condizioni igieniche pessime.
Frequentato da giovani e squattrinati di vario tipo. Meglio prenotare su internet: facendo così noi l'abbiamo pagato molto poco, ma in loco i prezzi sono decisamente più alti.

Central location, close to the train station and bus terminal and to the shopping streets. Beautiful, but dilapidated structure. Many floors and no elevator. Rooms are very very basic (they don't give you even toilet paper) and not particularly nice. Ban on drinking in the hostel is not even respected by the staff. The staff did a lot of mistakes sending us from an hostel to another (they have another location in the same street), but it also depends on who is on duty. Kitchen equipment is uncomfortable and dirty.
Frequented by young and penniless of various kinds. Better to book on the Internet: by doing it we slept there for a really cheap price, but on the spot prices are substantially higher.

Habour House (Sligo)

Vecchia casa del capitano di porto di Sligo. Molto bella, sia fuori sia dentro. E' in una zona industriale un po'defilata e per arrivare in città si deve camminare una decina di minuti. Più che un ostello sembra un hotel: tutto molto bello e pulitissimo, grande sala comune. Cucina perfetta, ben attrezzata e pulita, cereali e latte gratis a colazione. Stanze belle e comode. Ogni giorno all'ingresso scrivono su di una lavagna tempo previsto, temperatura e dove trovare musica dal vivo. Hanno un computer che si può usare gratis per 20 minuti. Età media dei frequentatori sui 40 anni. Buon rapporto qualità prezzo.

Old house of a Sligo's captain. Very beautiful, both inside and outside. It's in an industrial area a bit far from the center: to get into town you have to walk about ten minutes. More like a hotel than an hostel. It's all very nice and clean. Spacious lounge. Perfect kitchen, well equipped and clean, and free milk and cereals for breakfast. Beautiful and comfortable rooms. Every day they write on a blackboard the weather forecast, temperature and where to find live music. They have a computer you can use for free for 20 minutes. Average age of visitors on 40 years. Good value for money.

Sleepzone (Galway)

Ci siamo stati una sola notte, ma il personale era gentilissimo. Pulito e con ascensore, divieto di bere all'interno rispettato (noi ci siamo portati le lattine di sidro per sbaglio e ci hanno guardato malissimo). La cucina ci è parsa niente male, ma visto che c'era un'enorme scolaresca francese non siamo riusciti a capire bene. Buon rapporto qualità prezzo.

We stayed only one night but the staff was very kind. Clean and it has a lift. The ban on drinking is respected (we brought cans of cider by mistake and they looked at us badly). The kitchen seemed pretty good, but since there was a huge French schoolgroup were not able to understand well. Good value for money.

Irlanda per pezzenti/Ireland for pennyless

Visto che io e la Pelosa Metà abbiamo dovuto cavarcela in Irlanda con pochi dindini, mi sento di condividere le nostre (riuscite e non) strategie di risparmio e i relativi link.

• Per prima cosa abbiamo scelto il volo più economico possibile con eDreams. Abbiamo volato con Wizz Air (la compagnia di bandiera irlandese) e non abbiamo avuto di che lamentarci.
• Preventivamente mi ero fatta la ISIC Card, che certifica la propria identità di studente in tutto il mondo, permettendo di avere gli sconti appropriati. Dura un anno e costa 10 euro. Non me l'hanno mai controllata tranne in un negozio. Secondo me, a posteriori, sarebbe bastato il tesserino universitario italiano.
• In Irlanda ci siamo mossi in autobus, che è il metodo più conveniente. Bisogna controllare che i luoghi che si vogliono visitare siano ben collegati e i tempi di percorrenza (noi volevamo vedere un parco, ma abbiamo scoperto che da dove eravamo non c'era il bus -_-'), ma rimanendo sulle grandi città non dovrebbero esserci problemi. Visto che la repubblica d'Irlanda è collegata da un'unica rete di autobus (esclusa Dublino, che si gira comodamente a piedi) ci siamo fatti l'open road pass, con cui avevamo un tot di giorni in cui potevamo viaggiare aggratis a una cifra fissa. A posteriori avremmo speso MOLTO meno a pagare i singoli viaggi. Conviene andare sul sito e farsi qualche conto.
• Al primo museo appartenente alla rete Heritage mi sono fatta l'Heritage Card (non conviene farsela spedire. Paghi un tot ed entri gratis in tutti i siti Heritage, che sono in pratica i siti più belli da visitare. Per gli studenti conviene tantissimo perchè costa 8€, gli altri conviene si facciano due conti (alla Pelosa Metà quella normal da 21 per esempio non conveniva.
• Abbiamo comprato una guida Routard. Costava 27€, ma erano segnalati tutti i posti dove prendere i bus, i prezzi delle attrazioni...insomma era piuttosto buona sul lato pratico, l'unica rimostranza è che non dava una stima dei tempi di visita e per esempio abbiamo visitato Galway in mezza giornata e l'altra mezza non sapevamo che fare. In più era tarata molto su amanti della birra e della musica, mentre noi volevamo soprattutto vedere i luoghi celtici e magici (siamo nerd). Le informazioni sui bus in realtà erano reperibili gratis nelle singole stazioni, quindi forse non ne è valsa la pena. Acalia consiglia le guide Mondadori, che dice essere bellissime e le sempre molto accurate o, avendo da da spendere, le Lonly Planet che sono più complete ma alla lunga anche un po' pallose. Dice che le Lonley sono le migliori per i contenuti culturali (e secondo Miria anche a livello organizzativo) ma le Mondadori sono piene di immagini, consigli utili e itinerari per le passeggiate. Per esempio hanno sempre una parte dedicata alla cucina tipica con tanto di immagini che, specialmente nei paesi esotici, aiuta molto nella scelta dei piatti. Poi, essendo molto ben organizzate, è facilissimo aggiungere una destinazione o modificare l'itinerario all'ultimo senza impazzire. Siobhan è per le Lonley.
• Abbiamo sempre dormito in ostello. Con le camerate si spende pochissimo. Noi, più snob, abbiamo preso sempre la camera doppia con bagno, pagando comunque meno che in B&B o albergo. In più facendo la spesa al supermercato e mangiando in ostello si risparmia tantissimo sul cibo, che in Irlanda costa un sacco. Io ho usato per prenotare il sito www.hostelsclub.com di cui ho anche fatto la carta fedeltà vitalizia a 10€ più spedizione. La carta permette di evitare i costi del sito stesso. Però conviene solo se si va spesso in ostello e solo usando quel sito. Non sono così sicura che sia stata una buona idea. Seguirà la recensione degli ostelli stessi. Miria dice che usando hostelworld le commissioni vengono detratte dal totale. Siobhan aggiunge che hostelworld in caso di cancellazione restituisce anche al caparra (cavoli, saperlo prima...).
• Se si cena fuori, approfittare degli orari "early bird", cioè prima delle 19. In proporzione si paga meno (Scarabocchio Girl).

As the Hairy Half and I had to go to Ireland with not so much money, I'll share our (succesful and not) strategies to save money.

• To start we booked the cheapest flight with eDreams. We flight with Wizz Air (Ireland's company) and it was good.
• I bought the ISIC Card that certificates wordwide you're a student and let you have the student discounts. It lasts a year and costs 10 euro. Thinking about it later it was stupid, I think my normal university ID was enough.
  
• We used the bus to go around, that is the cheapest method. You should ceck before if the places you want to wisit are well connected and if you don't loose too much time (we wnted to see a park, but there wasn't the bus -_-'), but if you visit big cities there shouldn't be problems. As the Republic of Irland is connected (except for Dublin, but there it's simpler to go around by feet) by the same bus company, we bought the open road pass, a pass that lets you have a number of days of free travel for an extabilished amount of money. Thinking about it later, we would have saved a lot of money if we paid the single trips. It's better to check the costs in advance on the site.
  
• At the first Heritage site I bought the Heritage Card (more economical that having it sent before). You pay an amount and have free entry in all Heritage Sites, that are the most beautiful places to visit. It's very cheap for students as they pay it 8€, but the others should do some calculations before (the normal one that costs 21 wasn't good for the Hairy Half as the single places costed less).
• We bought a Routard guide. It costed 27€, quite a lot, but there were all the bus places, the prices...it was really good on the practical side. The only complaint is that id didn't do a time exteem, so for example we visited Galway in hald a day and didn't know what to do in the other half. Plus it was for a target of beer and music lovers, but we were more on the celtic and magic places (we're nerds). The bus informations were free at the station, so maybe this guide wasn't so convenient. Acalia said Mondadori guides are really good (but I think they're only in italian). She likes Lonley Planet too, If you want to spend some money on a guide. They're more complete, even a bit boring. Instead Siobhan prefers Lonley.
• We always slept in hostels. Sleeping in dorms you save a lot, but as it was a romantic trip we always booked a double room with bathroom and still spent less than in B&B and hotels. Plus, buying food at the supermarket and eating in the hostels you save a lot because in Ireland food is really expensive. I booked trough www.hostelsclub.com and did the site card, that lasts forever, for 10€ plus spedition. It let you skip the site wages, but is useful only if you use hostels a lot and only through the same site, so now I think it was a bit stupid. Hostels review will follow. Miria said that using hostelworld the site's commissions are subtracted from the total payment. Siobhan adds that in case of cancellation hostelworld gives you back the deposit (wish I knew it before).
• If you want to have dinner out, use the "early bird" offers (in general you find them eating before 19:00). They're cheaper (Scarabocchio Girl).

Per non smentirmi ho provato a comprare una rivista di moda irlandese, ma era troppo "da adulti" per i miei gusti, anche se ho apprezzato avere qualche anticipazione delle tendenze autunnali (scriverò anche di quello).

To live up my reputation I bought a fashion magazine, but the target was for older people than me, I think. Anyway I appreciated the autumn trends preview.

Ho comprato queste magliette a Dublino, in un posto che si chiamava Noname, che stava svendendo per chiusura. Ho pagato la prima 3€ e la seconda 5€.

Ho scoperto il negozio Penney's, che vende il marchio Primark, che costa pochissimo e in Italia non esiste T_T E io sognavo di farci shopping dalla prima volta che l'ho scoperto su Zerudas Wonderland. E'stata la scusa per fare uno shopping sfrenato. In qualsiasi città fossimo se lo vedevo entravo.

Il cibo in Irlanda tende ad avere maionese, patatine e cheddar dappertutto, ma non mi è dispiaciuto come temevo, anzi, mi sono innamorata del cheddar rosso. Quello che abbiamo mangiato di più sono stati forzatamente panini, sia perchè eravamo sempre in giro sia perchè mangiare costava tantissimo.

Food in Ireland has mayo, chips and cheddar everywhere, but I didn't disliked it as I feared. Instead I fell in love with red cheddar. We mostly ate sandwiches as we where always out and as food costed really a lot.

Nei bar spesso offrono il menù sandwitch e zuppa a 5 euro circa, niente male!

In the pubs they often offer a sandwitch and soup combo for 5 euro, not bad!

I due classici da provare assolutamente: la colazione all'inglese e il fish & chips! Per chi non l'avesse mai provato, il fish & chips è come il nostro pesce impanato, ma con una panatura molto più buona e croccante.

Nei supermercati c'era un sacco di roba interessante! A noi è piaciuto un sacco il Tesco, molto economico e con cose affascinanti. C'erano anche dei 24h su 24 che si chiamavano Spar. La cosa più interessante è stata il kit per la colazione con uova, pancetta, ecc. in un'unica confezione a prezzi favorevoli. Le cose che mi sono piaciute si più sono state il cheddar, la pancetta affumicata, il salmone affumicato irlandese, le salse freschissime del Tesco, in particolare la guacamole (quanto mi mancheranno!), la zuppa di pomodoro. Ho anche trovato l'Activia da bere alla fragola!

Supermarkets where full of interesting stuff! We liked in particular the Tesco ones, cheap and with a lot of gorgeous food. There where also 24 hour supermarkets called Spar. The most interesting stuff we saw there was an english breackfast kit that was a box with eggs, bacon, etc. sold together at a good price. The foods I liked the most where cheddar, smocked bacon, smocked irish salmon, the fresh Tesco souces, in particular guacamole (I'll mis them!), tomato soup. I also found the drinkable strawberry version of the Activia yogurt!

Sono a Milano un paio di giorni. Non credo riuscirò a postare molto, il vero ritorno sarà a settembre. Intanto vi racconto un po'del mio viaggio in Irlanda! Ha piovuto tutto il tempo e fatto freddissimo -_-' Visto che ho un sacco da raccontare ho deciso di dividere il tutto per tema.

Il luogo dove si incoronavano gli antichi re d'Irlanda. Molto suggestivo.

Città piccola, ma molto suggestiva. Si gira in una giornata, ma può essere una buona base per girare altri posti, anche se non è del tutto ben collegata per bus (specie di domenica). In foto: l'antica abbazia in rovina.

A little colorful city. You can see it all in a day, but it can be a good starting point for visiting other places. The only problem is that it isn't so connected by bus, in particular on Sundays. In the photo: the old abbey.

Una cosa che ho amato dell'Irlanda sono i vasi da fiori appesi in strada.

Si gira in mezza giornata. Molti negozi per turisti, che vendono il famoso e costosissimo tweed del Donegall e gli altrettanto costosi maglioni di lana di Aran, che per quanto pregiata pizzica. Quello nella foto è il salone del castello.

You can visit it in half a day. A lot of tourist shops that sell the famous and expensive tweed of the Donegall and the equally expensive Aran knit, that can be famous and stuff, but is itchy. In the photo you can see the main room of the castle.

Piccola città marittima vicino a Sligo, meta di surfisti. Bel panorama.

GALWAY

Si gira in mezza giornata. Una città moderna e commerciale, piena di negozi per turisti e di negozi in genere. Il monumento in foto è un falso storico, ma lì non lo dicono XD

NEWGRANGE

Sito megalitico vicino a Dublino, famoso per il suo tumulo che riceve luce solare all'interno solo il giorno del solstizio d'inverno. Ne vale davvero la pena.

Megalithic site near Dublin. It's famous for it's tumulus that recieves solar light in the inside only on the day of the winter solstice. Worth it.

DUBLIN

Un sacco di posti da vedere! Il nostro preferito è stato il museo archeologico, che ha tesori come un'autentica piroga di 7.000 anni fa perfettamente conservata, gioielli stupendi e i corpi rinvenuti nelle torbiere.

A lot of places to visit! Our favourite was the archeological museum, that has treasures as a 7.000 years ago pirogue, gorgeous jewels and bodies preserved by bogs.


Chiesa di san Patrizio. Molto bella, ma le bancarelle all'interno sono vergognose.

S. Patrick's church. Really great, but the stands on the inside are shameful.
