Camogli - San Fruttuoso

Taking advantage of a day of vacation I miraculously obtained, I went for a couple of days in Genoa to meet my friend RagazzAcidella.
On the first day we went on a trip to Camogli and San Fruttuoso. We reached Camogli from Genoa by train, arriving for lunch time. To tempt us, around the city there were the huge pans used for a famous cooking festival (which voices report is so crowded it is unapproachable).

Given the good weather, restaurants and focaccia shops were packed, so we stopped in the first restaurant with a free table that looked good, Il Portico Spaghetteria etc... in Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 197/A, right on the seafront.
We shared a plate of mixed croutons (8€) with pesto, gorgonzola and walnuts, tomatoes, dried tomatoes, tuna and anchovies, not bad and more abundant than I was hoping for.
Then we made split two first courses, Portico spaghetti with bottarga (the real one, sliced), pepper and tomato (12€) and the Camogli spaghetti with anchovies, pine nuts and toasted crumb (10€). The first ones were good, but the seconds were amazing.

After eating we took the boat to San Fruttuoso (round trip 14€) enjoying a half hour of sun, breeze and beautiful landscapes. The arrival at San Fruttuoso was breathtaking with the white abbey just by the sea (and the tiny little beach crammed with people).

Climbing a staircase, we reached the village, typical, but very small.

We went to visit San Fruttuoso Abbey (admission 7€), born as a church in the eighth century thanks to the presence of a freshwater spring, rebuilt as a Benedictine abbey in the tenth century and from the twelfth under the influence of the powerful family Doria, who in 1953 donated it to FAI, the association that manages it today.
The structure is small but quite dainty. It's on two levels plus a solarium and the church of the origins, which today is underground. In the corridors of the upper levels, there are on display the remains of the monks crockery. On the ground floor are the tombs of the Doria family. The cloister is particularly nice, with various carved columns and a couple of  carved capitals. If you search for it looking cloister to the walls of the upper floor, you can see at least an amphora included by the monks in the wall to accommodate the birds.
We also visited the sping, but it wasn't so interesting.

Behind the monastery is a promenade leading to a still inhabited tower owned by the Doria family, with the family coat of arms frescoed by the wall,.

After the visit we spent some time on the beach, then we took the boat for Camogli. There we saw fried fish served from a boat, which unfortunately we could not try because we were late for the train.

We comforted ourselves with a dinner at Jamila, a Senegalese restaurant in Via dei Giustiniani 11/13 R/A.
The waiter was very helpful and explained everything to us. To start, he brought us a taste of ginger and karkade drinks (both very good).
I choose to drink Senegalese tea which had an interesting flavor, but a bitter aftertaste. I ate the fish balls (mainly octopus) dish, which was excellent, abundant and juicy, served with white rice.

We ended the evening with a bit of healthy alcoholism at Kowalski, a pub serving Eastern European food and alcoholics in via dei Giustiniani, 3r. I tried a very good honey liquor.

Ancora calzini, ma non solo/Socks again, but not only

I did it again: I bought men's socks because they had a beautiful Pattern. At Celio, where I went to buy my brother's birthday present, I found an offer on accessories, buying three the third costed 1€. So I took three pairs of socks (which costed almost 5€ at full price) and I kept two, one with submarines and one with lobsters.

I went to Tally Weijl and, since the necklaces were on a discount 50% and I have a weakness for moon-shaped accessories, I bought this cute moon pendant with opalite gemstones and a star pendant for just over 3€.

The top purchase of the month regarding clothing was a bag that turns into a backpack, which I hope will help me with the back ache I had in the last period. It has a lot of pockets and the braces/handle are adjustable. It is made of a plastic coated canvas.
A friend of mine took me at Zara street market for 15€.

In a Chinese shop in Liguria I found surprisingly handy and light palettes: My mother bought me two, a medium and a large one, which costed about 5€. It's so supid that I did the whole Dumbo mural using a cutting board as a palette...

I returned to the branch of Mix Markt's, the Russian supermarket, behind the Central Station of Milan and I bought Germes meat pelmeni (Russian dumplings), sour cream, and I also bought a combo of salmon and cod roe and smoked salmon spread for 10 €.
The pelimeni were fabulous, I seasoned them trying to imitate the Turkish mantı, with sour cream and butter with sumac, an acidulous spice I bought when I went to Istanbul.

Trattoria russa Tre Orsi (White Day)

For White Day the Hairy Half and I went to the russian restaurant Trattoria Tre Orsi,in Viale Certosa 181 in Milan.
The window was painted with a bucolic, fairytale-like scene.
The decor of the entrance was so-so, with too shiny curtains and paper furnishings for a baptism. The interior, however, was nicer, with paintings of various qualities and wooden furniture and finishes.
The waiter was in uniform and very kind and helpful. There were also russian customers.

We got an appetizer of excellent vodka and pickles.

As a starter we both chose salmon blini, served with sour cream, which were delicious.
We also ordered a pretty good Russian beer.

As first courses we split  spaghetti with cream and salmon roe and pelimeni (Russian ravioli) with salmon roe (yes, we love salmon roe, especially I).

Although we were full, we also got a dessert: blini with honey, walnuts, hazelnuts and cashews and blini with a fabulous roses jam in which I found several petals.
The prices are not very low, but also not very high (especially if you use the discounts you can find on the Facebook page, on The Fork or if you take a combination menu). I would say that you can get away with a 20-25€ bill depending on what you take.

The Hairy Half also gave me the fourth volume of the "Magisterium" series by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black, "The Silver Mask".
It was really a nice evening, I really needed it because I'm having a bad time at work.

Cuore di cane/Heart of a Dog

Издание

"Heart of a Dog" (Собачье Сердце) is a 1925 novel by Michail Afanas'evič Bulgakov. Of this Russian writer I had already read "The Fatal Eggs" and my beloved "The Master and Margherita", so this book was a safe shot.
It is a slim novel that teases the new Soviet man just at the height of the NEP, Lenin's New Economic Policy.
The protagonist of the first part of the book is a stray dog who is adopted by a wealthy surgeon. The dog feels in paradise, but the man has not saved it from his miserable condition without ulterior motives: in fact, he wants to try a revolutionary operation to rejuvenate the human body on him. The second part of the book narrates through fake notes and journal entries the incredible consequences of this experiment.
I found it a very brilliant, compelling book with a humor that does not spare anyone. At a writing level, the most interesting part is definitely the beginning, as the story is told from the dog's point of view, although the change in the second part is functional to the plot. I would say that it is a classic that aged very well, accessible even to people who don't know much about the history of Soviet Russia.
By the way I was fascinated by the description of the professor's meals.
I would definitely recommend it.

MIX Markt - Alimentari dai Paesi dell'Est Europa (Milano)

Costavano tutti intorno all'euro.

Stavolta ho provato degli ottimi dolci all'amarena.

Il mio Settembre via Instagram/My September via Instagram

A settembre ho trovato lavoro!

In September I found a new job! I was taken for a six month full-time internship. I am very happy, I hope to settle in quickly and above all not to neglet my work as a comic artist!

The penultimate weekend of the month I went on for the second time to the Treviso Comic Book Festival, one of the best cartoon festivals in Italy. It was awesome, but I really spent too much (I will soon write a post about it).

The last weekend of the month I went with my Hairy Half to a wine and food event at Villa Arconati, a beautiful baroque style villa in Bollate, just outside Milan. I liked it very much!

This month I started creating accessories with shrink plastic. Among other things I made dragonfly wing earrings and a pair of necklaces with matching earrings. I think if I did not start working I would have already finished the material I bought.
I also crafted some more.

In September I discovered four new restaurants in Milan: the Philippine Yum, the American All American Diner, the Brazilian Barbacoa and the Japanese Toyama.
I also went shopping at a Russian supermarket and tried fantastic new teas by Mlesna.
On the other hand, I decided to take some super healthy lunches to work, we'll see if it works.

My beloved fall arrived at the end of the month, but for the time I have really seen little.
Stay tuned on my Instagram because Inktober just started!

"Rough Draft" (in original "Чернови́к", Chernovik) is a 2005 novel by Sergey Lukyanenko. In 2007
was released "Final Draft" (in original "Чистовик", Chistovik) which should conclude the saga.
Kirill Maskimov is a twenty-two year old who lives Moscow and has a very normal life: he works as a manager in a computer company, he just broke up with his girlfriend and he has a dog. One day, coming home, he finds in his apartment a woman who says she lives there from three years. From that moment on, the situation becomes increasingly odd: people forgot about him, his documents fade...
Kirill has to find out how to get out of trouble, who or what caused it and why, before it's too late.
This book is simply awesome.
The plot is extremely engaging, behind every mystery hides another in a continuous game of unveilings that keeps the breath suspended until the end. And all the twists are perfectly coherent to the logic of the setting. The author avoids explaining and prefers to show, leaving some ambiguities, but making the narration much more interesting.
The protagonist, like the one of  the"Night watch" saga (you can find my review here), which made the author famous, seems a guy with whom it is easy to identify, not a "chosen one", but someone dragged against his will in a problem that is too big for him. But, compared to Anton of "Night watch", Kirill is a much more active character, at the cost of doing stupid things, and thus makes the novel much more lively.
In addition to all this, "Rough Draft" is very well written. Fantasy and fantasy science fiction often have a flat style, leaving to the content the task to amaze the reader. Luk'janenko is far from the poetry style of a Bradbury, yet in "Night watch" he already inserted moments of very interesting and very Russian reflection. If this was already an intriguing feature, here there is a further maturation of his style, especially in the use of examples and metaphors. The first page is already awesome, if you go to the library try to read it. The pages in which various characters analyze the situation of the protagonist using the various science fiction masters as a way to understand it are a masterpiece too. I leave you with a quote that I found pure genius: "A writer believes in miracles less than a prostitute believes in love."

"Raindeer Moon" is a 1987 novel by the U.S.A. writer Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.
The protagonist is Yanan, born in Siberia twenty thousand years ago. The story begins when the girl is already dead and unfolds as a first person narration flashback along two parallel timelines: one that tells her story when she was alive and one that talks about her experience as a spirit. Yanan is beautiful and clever, but she's a hothead. She and the other hunter-gatherers of the Upper Paleolithic Siberia, much like an icy version of the African savannah, constantly struggle against the hunger, the cold and all the other numerous dangers of their environment. In this hard context the strict social rules that govern the life of the human groups can be a help, but also a prison, especially in winter, when the cold creates a forced closeness.
Marshall is not a paleontologist, but it's obvious she studied. The natural environment is recreated with care and the behavior of the human populations appears very realistic, probably because it is inspired by that of the Ju-wa hunter-gatherers of the Kalahari with whom she lived for a long time in the '50s. The huts she describes, however, are based on those excavated in the Yenisei-Angara basin.
But to talk about "Raindeer Moon" I'll have to go well beyond the realism of the story, which is compromised from the start because of the - although very interesting - decision to tell the story as if the spiritual beliefs of the protagonists were real. Part of the novel's charm comes from the suspense created by the choice to tell only in the end Yanan's cause of death. Most, however, comes from the deep humanity of the characters, who, though following customs that may seem bizarre to the reader, suffer, rejoice and love as we do. I found particularly interesting, compared to other novels set in prehistoric times, to choose to tell the story of people living in very harsh conditions. In this way Marshall creates a novel of great emotional impact. This especially regarding to the first-person narration of of Yanan's life, while I found sometimes boring the tales of her experience as a spirit, where she turns into various animals to live like them for a certain period.
Despite this, I loved this novel it and I would definitely recommend it.
I thank Karmilla, reader of my blog's La voce del Dinosauro for her advice!

Laurus (Eugene Vodolazkin)

This summer I'm studying all the time, so unfortunately I read only one novel so far. It is the Russian novel that I bought in May at London airport, "Laurus" by Eugene Vodolazkin. It was published in 2015 and won the Big National Book Award, the Yasnaya Polyana Award and the Gorky Prize. It is the second novel by the author, who works in the Department of Ancient Russian Literature in Pushkin House since 1990 and is an expert about Russian medieval history and folklore.
The book begins in a small town of the late 1400 in a Russia battered by the plague. It follows the life of Arseny, who after a tragedy undertakes a journey through eras and nations, changing identities, healing the sick and seeking redemption.
The writing style is very original, more like a medieval hagiography that a modern novel. The result is fascinating, but I also found it a little confusing and slow at times.
The characters' beliefs are very interesting, but they are so different that it is hard to empathize with them, also because their personality doesn't have a real evolution.
Despite so far my review seems negative, it is a novel that manages to immerse the reader in a medieval world and contains many significant concepts such as the non-linearity of time.
The comparison with "The Name of the Rose" made by some of the reviewers seemed inappropriate apart from the medieval setting. While the book by Eco has long explanations about parts of the historical context, but also a compelling storyline and charming characters, the book by Vodolazkin doesn't explain anything (this being full of ideas difficult to understand for a contemporary) and is flat and shiny as a Russian icon.

Shopping a Londra

Since we went to London for only three days, one of which was bank holyday, I have not had many opportunities for shopping (on Monday, being a shopalcolic I almost tried to rob the store in the picture, since I could not tell if it was closed or open).

I ended up going to Primark although it also opened a branch near Milan (but I have to say that the first and so far only Italian branch is unpractical to reach without a car and people told me it is always terribly crowded). There were several nice things and funny things like the Minions and Chewbacca kigurumi, but nothing that I liked enough to buy.

E poi luccicava!

Nothing except the t-shirt of Game of Thrones, which I bought for £7, because one more a nerd shirt never hurts! And moreover it shone!

Another thing that shone was the Russian book in English that I bought at the airport in a fit for £8.99. It is "Laurus" by Eugene Vodolazkin, and it seems that it's the Russian answer to "The Name of the Rose" by Eco.
It's the story of a healer spanning through different eras, starting from the Middle Ages Russia scourged by the plague. It won the Yasnaya Polyana prize and the Gorky Prize. Obviously on the plane I didn't read even one line because I drew and I do not know when I will have time to read it, but I really want to.

I took advantage of the opportunity of the trip to UK to buy my beloved crumpets, a sort of thick and spongy pancakes typical of British breakfast, that are great aten warm with a bit of butter. I also bought Marmite, another typical British product (essentially the local alternative to Nutella), a spreadable yeast extract cream that I can not tell if I like or hate.
