Seconds

"Seconds" is a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O'Malley, an author who became famous with "Scott Pilgrim".
It tells the story of Katie, a young chef who runs the kitchen of a restaurant called Seconds, but works hard to open a place of her own in an old building along the river.
Katie is going through a difficult period between a work and the other, plus she broke up with her boyfriend. In addition to this bad situation, a terrible accident happens at "Seconds". But a sprite offers Katie an easy way to "correct" the past and avoid her mistakes. Katie will abuse this power with unpredictable consequences.
I loved "Seconds". In terms of storyline it would have been very easy to fall into banality: the abuse of power and its consequences, and the ability to correct the past are not original themes at all. But O'Malley was able to create an original work, which, in fact, in the same week in which it was released in the U.S. got at the top of the best seller list of the New York Times.
What are the elements that make this work so original?
First, the choice of the protagonist. If this had been an ordinary comic, the protagonist would be Hazel, beautiful, but shy and awkward waitress, who believes in fairies and attends an art school. But the protagonist is Katie, who puts work before love and family, is self-centered, cynical, with a bad sense of humor and who does not have scruples to take shortcuts to get what she wants.
The other characters are less deepened, but credible and non-trivial. Everyone is characterized by some particular feature.
The dialogues are perfect, brilliant, but realistic, especially Katie's.
Another strong point of "Seconds" is the way the story is told. The use of captions in particular is very effective, especially when they are contradicted by the main character in a meta-comic game.
The book is divided into chapters, internally divided by the various corrections that Katie performs on the past.
The pace of the story is perfect, more and more syncopated, interrupted at the right place by dreamy splash pages until the final resolution.
I also found very nice that not everything is explained although the ending is more than satisfactory.
As I was told, however, despite Katie is a chef and her dreams are linked to two restaurants, cooking and food are not really fundamental to the plot.
The drawing is the characteristic one of the author, which draws heavily from manga, video games and American pop culture to create a personal and recognizable style. The use of this rounded style to show "adult" situations like sex is really interesting.
It is not always a beautiful style (it happens that the characters face changes from one square to the other...), but it is dynamic, striking and really detaliled (for example, I liked the characters' clothes). Plus it's a very modern style in the use of arrows, captions and frames, which sometimes remind of infographics. I found interesting also the insertion of a picture book in the comic, of course with a different style. The only doubts I have are about the captions that explain the states of mind of the characters: do they really add to the comic or fill the gaps in the drawings?
I also found that the character design of Katie's  former boyfriend was a bit different from that of the other characters.
Ultimately, however I loved it and I recommend it very much.

Indie Game: The Movie

"Indie Game: The Movie" is a 2012 Canadian documentary by James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot which won the World Cinema Documentary Editing Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.
As you can easily understand from the title, the theme of the documentary are the creators of indie games. In particular, the film follows Jonathan Blow, reflecting on his famous Braid, an indie game of the first generation, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes along various stages of the development of Super Meat Boy until the release, and Phil Fish during the development of Fez until the winning of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, but before the proper release.
I found the documentary very well done. But you should take into account that it is an indie product, with an indie theme, which won a prize at an indie festival.
It's fascinating on the human level, in showing the ability of developers to risk everything for their work, their problems and their peculiarities, however, without the slightest knowledge of indie games is likely to be boring (for now on this kind I have only played the great Papers, please and Botanicula) and to really appreciate it would be even better to have a passion for this world as my friend Tapiroullant who made me see this movie.
It also has a bitter aftertaste because it shows team of indie developers who had great success, but the viewer can perceive between the lines a much larger number of people who failed and maybe lost everything in the attempt.
