"So Yesterday" è un romanzo del 2004 di Scott Westerfeld, uno dei miei autori di young adult preferiti. E' il suo terzo romanzo e quello che lo ha fatto emergere.
Ha vinto un Victorian Premier's Award ed è anche sulla lista dei migliori young adult della American Library Association. Sono stati venduti i diritti per un film, che però non è ancora stato realizzato.
Il protagonista, il diciassettenne Hunter, è un "cool hunter", un cacciatore di tendenze di New York. Un giorno, durante le sue ricerche, incontra Jen e rimane affascinato dai suoi lacci delle scarpe e da lei, tanto da portarla al focus group del pomeriggio, dove insieme ad altri giovani trendy, ha il compito di analizzare il nuovo spot di una famosa ditta di scarpe. Ma, come Hunter aveva già intuito, Jen non è una semplice trendsetter, è un'Innovatrice e in quanto tale è in grado di vedere particolari che gli altri non vedono. I suoi commenti sullo spot finiscono per coinvolgerli in uno strano mistero...
Ho adorato questo libro sia per com'è scritto, sia per come sviscera il mondo della moda e del cool proponendo soluzioni non banali, sia per gli aneddoti interessanti che fornisce, sia per la psicologia assolutamente credibile del protagonista.
Lo consiglio senz'altro per voi o per eventuali figli, per iniziare a craccare il codice del marketing divertendosi.

"So Yesterday" is a 2004 novel by Scott Westerfeld, one of my favorite young adult authors. It's his third novel and the one that made him famous.
It won a Victorian Premier's Award and is also on the list of the best young adults of the American Library Association. The rights for a movie have been sold, but it has not been made yet.
The protagonist, 17-year-old Hunter, is a cool hunter. One day, during his research, he meets Jen and is fascinated by her shoe laces and her, so he brings her to the afternoon focus group, where along with other trendy youngsters he has to analize the new commercial of a famous shoes company. But, as Hunter had already guessed, Jen is not just a trendsetter, she is an Innovator and as such she is able to see details that others aren't able to see. Her comments on the spot end up involving them in a strange mystery...
I loved this book for its writing style, for the way it draws the world of fashion and cool offering non banal solutions, for the interesting anecdotes it provides and for the absolutely credible psychology of the protagonist.
I would definitely recommend it for you or for your sons, to start cracking the code of marketing while having fun.

Steampunk, caviale e bagni speziati/Steampunk, caviar and spicy bath

La Pelosa Metà per l'anniversario mi ha regalato anche la trilogia Leviathan di Scot Westerfeld. Come ormai saprete questo autore mi piace molto. Una mia amica mi aveva già prestato il primo romanzo della serie, che è ambientata durante la prima guerra mondiale, ma in una versione alternativa del nostro mondo in cui l'Inghilterra e i suoi alleati possiedono una tecnologia basata sull'ingegneria genetica (vi dico solo: dirigibili che in realtà sono balene volanti *W*) e la Germania e i suoi alleati una tecnologia basata su macchine a vapore molto potenti e complicate (robottoni steampunk). Come storia in sé è piuttosto semplice, e anzi, come molti young adults di Westerfeld il target è piuttosto giovane, ma ho trovato il libro molto carino e l'ambientazione geniale. Nella raccolta poi ci sono anche illustrazioni molto belle di cui alcune a colori!

Vi dirò poi come sono gli altri due romanzi della saga.

The Hairy Half for the anniversary also gave me Scot Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy. As you know by now, I really like this author. A friend of mine already lent me the first novel of the series, which is set during the First World War, but in an alternate version of our world in which England and its allies have a technology based on genetic engineering (I only say: airships that are actually flying whales *W*) and Germany and its allies have a technology based on very powerful and complicatedsteam engines (steampunk giant robots). The story itself is pretty simple, and indeed, as in many young adults by Westerfeld the target is pretty young, but I tought the book was very nice and the setting brilliant. There are also very beautiful illustrations including some in color in my version!

I'll tell you then how are the other two novels in the series.

Brutti (Westerfeld)/Uglies (Westerfeld)

La serie "Brutti" di Scott Westerfeld mi piace tantissimo ed è la mia preferita dell'autore. E' composta da quattro libri, di cui in Italia sono editi separatamente solo i primi due, Brutti e Perfetti, o se no è disponibile una raccolta dei primi tre, Beauty, la trilogia. L'ultimo è Extras, che sono facilmente reperibili anche usati su internet e il cui inglese fortunatamente è abbastanza semplice. Da questa serie doveva essere tratto un film che doveva uscire nel 2012, ma non ho trovato notizie recenti al riguardo.Come la serie "Vampirus" e la serie "Midnighters", di cui ho già parlato, è uno young adult, ma qui il target si sente meno che in altri romanzi.

L'ambientazione è semplicemente geniale: la civiltà come noi la conosciamo è stata distrutta da un batterio mangia-petrolio fuori controllo, le linee costiere sono cambiate a seguito del surriscaldamento globale, l'umanità vive asserragliata in città stato fondate sui tre principi di Sostenibilità, Uguaglianza e Pace. A 12 anni i bambini vengono trasferiti in dormitori e all'età di 16 anni vengono operati per diventare bellissimi ed avere una salute di ferro. Tramite la chirurgia estetica, infatti, i governi pensano di eliminare tutte le ingiustizie e le disuguaglianze determinate dall'aspetto esteriore. Una volta operati, i giovani hanno accesso al quartiere dove i Belli passano il loro tempo fra feste e divertimenti, fino al raggiungimento dell'età adulta e all'inizio della vita lavorativa.

Sembra perfetto, no? Tally Youngblood, la protagonista, come tutti non vede l'ora dell'operazione per diventare Bella, ma la sua nuova amica Shay non è così convinta e le fa notare delle incongruenze nel comportamento delle persone operate. Quando l'amica scappa all'operazione per cercare Fumo, una misteriosa città costituita da Brutti sfuggiti all'operazione, Tally è costretta a fare una scelta...

I primi tre libri seguono le avventure di Tally. Il quarto è ambientato in Giappone qualche anno dopo e la protagonista è Aya, un'altra giovane brutta. L'ambientazione pop non è male, ma è scocciante che proprio sul finale Tally compapersonaggio secondario. Purtroppo il livello di Westerfeld spesso si abbassa sul finale. In ogni caso il mio libro preferito è il secondo (probabilmente perché è il primo che ho letto ^^').

La serie dei "Brutti" mi piace così tanto perché, oltre ad avere una bella trama, affronta in maniera credibile e interessante temi  problematici come la bellezza, il conformismo, l'individualità, il sistema di governo, i problemi ambientali...

I love the "Uglies" series by Scott Westerfeld, it's my favorite of the author. It consists of four books: Ugly, Pretties, Specials and Extras.
This series was to be made into a movie that was to come out in 2012, but I could not find recent news about it.
As the series "Vampirus" and the series "Midnighters", which I have already spoken about, is a young adult, but here you feel the target less than in other novels.

The setting is simply brilliant: civilization as we know it has been destroyed by oil-eating bacteria out of control, the coastlines have changed as a result of global warming, and humanity lives holed up in city-states based on the three principles of Sustainability , Equality and Peace. 12 year-old children are transferred in dorms and at age 16 are operated to become beautiful and have a strong constitution. Through cosmetic surgery, in fact, the Governments plan to eliminate all the injustices and inequalities determined by appearance. Once operated, young people have access to the neighborhood where Pretties spend their time between parties and entertainment, until they reach adulthood and start their working life.

Sounds perfect, no? Tally Youngblood, the main character, as everyone, looks forward to the operation to become beautiful, but her new friend Shay is not so convinced and points out inconsistencies in the behavior of operated people. When she runs the operation to look for Smoking, a mysterious city that consists of Uglies escaped from the operation, Tally is forced to make a choice ...

The first three books follow the adventures of Tally. The fourth is set in Japan a few years later and the main character is Aya, another young ugly. The pop setting is not bad, but it is annoying that right on the final Tally becomes a secondary character. Unfortunately, the level of Westerfeld's novel often falls at the end. In any case, my favorite book is the second (probably because it is the first I've read ^^').
I like it so much "Uglies" because, in addition to having a nice plot, it faces in a credible and interesting way problematic issues such as beauty, conformity, individuality, the system of government, environmental issues...

Si parla di vampiri, ma più che un fantasy è un libro di fantascienza: infatti nel mondo di Vampirus il vampirismo è una malattia a trasmissione sessuale! Un'altra delle geniali idee di Westerfeld.

Cal, come milioni di giovani studenti, era più interessato a divertirsi che al corso di biologia per il quale si era trasferito a New York dal Texas. Oggi, dopo una notte con Morgan, una ragazza misteriosa e affascinante incontrata in un bar, la biologia è diventata la sua unica via di salvezza. Il rapporto con Morgan gli ha infatti trasmesso un parassita temibile, quello del vampirismo. Per fortuna Cal risulta essere un portatore sano: non si trasforma dunque in un cannibale impazzito, pur conservando un robusto appetito di carne, ma si ritrova dotato di sensi acuiti, forza e velocità sovrumane, anche se con una caratteristica piuttosto frustrante: una costante eccitazione sessuale. Un dramma per il ragazzo, che non può concedersi neppure un bacio se non vuole contagiare altre ragazze innocenti. Assoldato da un'antichissima organizzazione segreta che si occupa di tenere sotto controllo altri vampiri infetti come lui, i pip, ovvero i "parassita-positivi", Cal ha il compito di rintracciare le sue ex fidanzate, ormai contagiate, e catturarle perché possano essere curate (dal sito della Feltrinelli)

La storia è narrata attraverso il punto di vista gradevolmente ironico di Cal. C'è parecchia azione, ma sesso e violenza sono ad un livello accettabile da qualcunque genitore (purtroppo o per fortuna?). Il peggio è qualche dettaglio vagamente disgustoso sui parassiti davvero esistenti.
Anche se la storia è indirizzata ad un pubblico "giovane", il target è più adulto di quello de I diari della mezzanotte.
Non è un libro particolarmente profondo, ma è interessante, divertente e promuove il sesso sicuro.
Ha un seguito, Apocalypse Vampirus, che recensirò prossimamente (comunque vi anticipo che è decisamente peggiore).

This book is a vampire story, but it's more science fiction than fantasy: infact here vampirism is a venereal disease! Another of Whesterfeld brilliant ideas.

Two days after arriving in New York for college, Cal loses his virginity to a girl who picks him up. From this encounter Cal picks up an STD, but this is an unusual one: it turns its victims into "peeps" -- parasite positives—raving cannibalistic monsters with unusual strength, night vision, heightened senses, and an affinity with rats. Cal himself turns out to be immune, but he's a carrier—he gets the strength and senses without the nasty side effects. But before he knows it he has infected others.
Cal is recruited by the Night Watch, a secret government organization that has existed for centuries to contain the disease and its victims. His first assignment is to capture all the girls he's infected. But soon Cal realizes that there is more going on than he has been told: the disease is changing in response to mysterious forces from under the earth that are waking up after centuries of slumber (from Wikipedia).

The story is told through the pleasantly ironic point of view of Cal. There is a lot of action, but sex and violence (unfortunately or fortunately?) are at a level acceptable by any parent. The worst are some vaguely disgusting details about actually existing parasites.
Although the story is addressed to a"young" audience, the target is more adult than that of "Midnighters".
This book is not particularly deep, but it is interesting, fun and promotes safe sex.
It has a sequel, Apocalypse Vampirus, which I'll rewiew later (anyway I'll tell in advance that it's considerably worst).

Un libro per Halloween: I diari della mezzanotte (Scott Westerfeld)/A book for Halloween: Midnighters (Scott Westerfeld)

I diari della Mezzanotte è una trilogia di Scott Westerfeld, un autore che mi piace molto. Rispetto ad altri libri di Westerfeld ho trovato il target un po'più giovane (forse un pochino troppo per me). I protagonisti sono un gruppo di giovani disadattati con il potere di vivere nella venticinquesima ora della giornata, pervasa da una luce violetta, mentre il resto del mondo sembra congelato. Da dove viene questo misterioso potere? E chi sono le creature che strisciano nell'ombra? La storia riporta ad una battaglia combattuta agli albori dell'umanità fra atmosfere sempre più cupe e problemi adolescenziali.
Assolutamente affascinante, anche se avrei preferito leggerlo prima. Secondo me l'età ideale per gustarlo al massimo è fra i 12 e i 19 anni.
In Italia questa trilogia è uscita prima in volumi separati e poi in una raccolta molto economica, se non sbaglio a 10 euro, per cui vale la pena di provarla (indovinate quale edizione ho preso io? -.-).

The Midnighters is a trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, an author I like a lot. Compared to other books by Westerfeld, I found the target slightly younger (maybe a little too much for me). The protagonists are a group of young underdogs with the power to live in the twenty-fifth hour of the day, filled with a violet light, while the rest of the world seems frozen. Where does this mysterious power come from? And who are the creatures that crawl in the shadows? The story shows a battle fought from the dawn of humanity between an increasingly gloomy atmosphere and teenager problems.
Absolutely fascinating, although I would have preferred to read it before. I think that the ideal age to enjoy it at its maximum is between 12 and 19 years.
