The Good Place

"The Good Place" è una serie televisiva statunitense  del 2016 creata da Mike Schur. E' composta da due stagioni da 13 episodi da 22 minuti ciascuno. Attualmente la terza serie è in corso di produzione.

La serie è ambientata nell'adilà. Eleanor Shellstrop, la protagonista, dopo essere morta, si risveglia nel Posto Buono, una sorta di paradiso. Il problema è che lei non è buona, anzi! In vita è stata una stronza galattica e il suo arrivo in paradiso è stato un errore. Ma Eleanor è decisissima a rimanere dov'è, con l'aiuto dell'anima gemella che le è stata assegnata all'arrivo, Chidi Anagonye, nervosissimo professore di etica.

"The Good Place" è la serie più divertente degli ultimi tempi. L'aldilà che mostra è un posto surreale, con frozen yogurt e case dipinte a pagliacci. I protagonisti, pur rimanendo profondamente umani hanno dei tratti caratterizzanti che li rendono molto buffi e le loro interazioni sono la parte migliore del telefilm,

Consigliatissimo.

"The Good Place" is a 2016 American television series created by Mike Schur. It consists of two seasons of 13 episodes of 22 minutes each. The third series is currently under production.

The series is set in the afterlife. Eleanor Shellstrop, the protagonist, after dying, awakens in the Good Place, a sort of paradise. The problem is that she is not a good person, indeed! During her life, she was a galactic bitch and her arrival in paradise was a mistake. But Eleanor absolutely wants to stay where she is, with the help of the the soul mate assigned to her on her arrival, Chidi Anagonye, a very nervous ethics professor.

"The Good Place" is the funniest I watched lately. The afterlife it shows is a surreal place, with frozen yogurt and clown-painted houses. The protagonists, while remaining deeply human, have characterizing traits that make them hilarious and their interactions are the best part of the show,

Thank you for smoking

"Thank You for Smoking" è un romanzo del 1994 dello scrittore statunitense Christopher Buckley, che nel 2005 è stato adattato in un film con lo stesso nome diretto da Jason Reitman e con protagonista quel gran figo di Aaron Eckhart.

Avevo visto il film quando era uscito, ma ho deciso di leggere il romanzo (di cui ignoravo l'esistenza) perché l'ho trovato nella lista dei libri consigliati in fondo a "On Writing", il manuale di scrittura di Stephen King.

Il protagonista è Nick Naylor, un lobbista del tabacco senza scrupoli che cerca di cavarsela con ogni mezzo in un ambiente di lavoro a dir poco ostile, con il supporto degli amici della m.o.d. (merchant of death) squad Polly, parte della lobby degli alcolisti, e Bobby Jay, della lobby delle armi.

La scrittura è a dir poco eccellente, si riesce ad empatizzare con un protagonista assolutamente deprecabile e questo spinge il lettore a voler sapere come se la caverà Nick nelle situazioni sempre più complicate in cui si ritrova. Questo doppio binario, da un lato l'empatia con il personaggio e dall'altra la scorrettezza morale dello stesso, rende il libro divertente, con un fondo di amaro perché le situazioni, per quanto esagerate, sono realistiche. Il finale, poi, è con il botto. Consigliatissimo.

"Thank You for Smoking" is a 1994 novel by the American writer Christopher Buckley, which in 2005 was adapted into a film with the same name directed by Jason Reitman and starring a real hottie, Aaron Eckhart.

I watched the film when it came out, but I decided to read the novel (which I didn't know existed) because I found it in the list of books recommended at the bottom of "On Writing", Stephen King's writing handbook.

The protagonist is Nick Naylor, a tobacco lobbyist without scruples who tries to get by with all means in an hostile environment, with the support of his friends of the M.o.D. (merchant of death) Squad: Polly, part of the alchol lobby, and Bobby Jay, of the weapons lobby.

The writing is nothing short of excellent, you can empathize with an absolutely despicable protagonist and this pushes the reader to want to know how Nick will manage in the increasingly complicated situations in which he finds himself. This double track, on the one hand the empathy with the character and on the other the moral lowness of the same, makes the book fun, with a bitter afterstas as the situations, however exaggerated, are realistic. Plus, the ending is great. Highly recommended.

Addio Fottuti Musi Verdi

"Addio Fottuti Musi Verdi" è un film italiano del 2017 realizzato dal gruppo di youtubers (e non solo) The Jackal, prodotto con Cattleya e Rai Cinema.

Il protagonista è Ciro, un disoccupato napoletano più che trentenne, che, mentre di giorno lavora in un ristorante, di notte tenta ancora di fare il lavoro per cui ha studiato, il grafico, con risultati deprimenti. L'amica di cui è innamorato, Matilda, parte sperando di trovare lavoro all'estero. Ciro, depresso si fa coinvolgere dall'amico Fabio, appassionato di fantascienza, a mandare un messaggio nello spazio e Ciro invia il suo CV. Quella notte un raggio traente lo porta a bordo di un'astronave per un colloquio...

Incredibilmente, gli effetti speciali non sono male. Il livello di recitazione non è incredibile, ma nemmeno fastidioso. L'umorismo è quello tipico delle clip dei The Jackal.

Di sicuro è un film molto, molto trash. Nonostante le recensioni pessime su internet, io ho riso fino alle lacrime (sarà che sono una precaria che adora la fantascienza). Non so se sia il caso di consigliarlo, ma se vi piacciono i The Jackal o volete vedere qualcosa di molto stupido è il film giusto.

"Addio Fottuti Musi Verdi" is a 2017 Italian film made in the youtuber group The Jackal (and not only), produced with Cattleya and Rai Cinema.

The protagonist is Ciro, an unemployed Neapolitan man, more than thirty years old, who, while working in a restaurant during the day, at night still tries to do the job for which he studied, the graphic designer, with depressing results. The friend he loves, Matilda, leaves, hoping to find work abroad. Ciro, depressed, is convinced by his friend Fabio, passionate about science fiction, to send a message in space and Ciro sends his CV. That night a tractor beam takes him aboard a spaceship for an interview ...

Incredibly, the special effects are not bad. The level of acting is not incredible, but neither annoying. The humor is the typical one of the Jackal clips.

For sure it's a very, very trash movie. Despite the bad reviews on the internet, it had me laughing tears (it may be that I'm a precarious worker who loves science fiction). I do not know whether to recommend it, but if you like The Jackal or want to see something very stupid it is the right movie.

Birthday trip to London: day 2

Il secondo giorno del mio viaggio di compleanno a Londra è cominciato nel migliore dei modi, con una colazione taiwanese preparata da un vero taiwanese (Uan, marito della mia amica Prociona) e costituita da favolosi pancake salati e panini dolci (di cui quelli viola al taro). Ci è piaciuta da matti!

The second day of my birthday trip to London started in the best way, with a Taiwanese breakfast cooked by a real Taiwanese (Uan, the husband of my friend Prociona) and consisting of fabulous savoury pancakes and sweet buns (of which the purple ones were taro flavoured). We totally loved it!

In onore del mio compleanno, ho deciso di togliermi uno sfizio e visitare la costosissima Torre di Londra (21,50£). L'abbiamo raggiunti tramite la metropolitana, scendendo alla stazione di London Bridge. Avevo prenotato i biglietti su internet, quindi non abbiamo quasi fatto fila (anche perché era un giorno feriale e siamo arrivati presto).

In honor of my birthday, I decided to spoil myself and visit the very expensive Tower of London (£21.50). We reached it with the subway, getting off at London Bridge station. I had booked the tickets on the internet so we almost didn't queue (even because it was a working day and we arrived early).

La Torre è molto vasta, suddivisa in molti edifici di diverse epoche, sorvegliato dai Beefeater, le guardie della Torre con le caratteristiche uniformi.

Per evitare la folla siamo andati subito a vedere i gioielli della corona. L'esposizione era molto bella (incredibile quanto luccichino enormi quantità di pietre preziose), ma quello che ho apprezzato di più sono stati i cartelli esplicativi ricchi di aneddoti interessanti.

The Tower is very large, divided into many buildings of different eras, guarded by Beefeaters, the tower guards with characteristic uniforms.

To avoid the crowd, we immediately went to see the Crown Jewels. The exhibition was very beautiful (the sparkle of a pile of precious stones is really impressive), but what I appreciated the most were the explanatory signs full of interesting anecdotes.

Per lo stesso motivo mi sono piaciuti moltissimo il palazzo medievale e il serraglio, con animali oggi ricordati da bellissime statue di maglia metallica.

Gli aneddoti sugli animali erano particolarmente belli, a partire dalle misure di sicurezza inesistenti, fino alla zebra amante della birra e al re che ha inventato dei biberon per allattare dei cuccioli di leone.

For the same reason I really liked the medieval palace and the menagerie, whith animals that today are remembered with beautiful metal mesh statues.

The anecdotes about the animals were particularly fascinating, starting from the non-existent safety measures, up to the beer-loving zebra and to the king who invented a bottle to feed lion cubs.

Invece mi hanno un po' commosso i graffiti lasciati sui muri della Torre dai prigionieri, la triste storia di Anna Bolena, seconda moglie di Enrico VIII, e quella di Jane Grey, salita al trono grazie ad un complotto e per quello stesso complotto deposta dopo soli 9 giorni e poi uccisa.

Instead I was a bit moved by the graffiti left on the walls of the Tower by the prisoners, by the sad story of Anna Bolena, second wife of Henry VIII, and that of Jane Gray, who ascended to the throne thanks to a conspiracy and because of the same conspiracy after only 9 days was deposed and killed.

Abbiamo visto i famosi corvi della Torre, a cui vengono tarpate le ali perché si dice che quando lasceranno la struttura essa crollerà e con lei la monarchia inglese.

We have seen the famous ravens of the Tower, whose wings are clipped because the legend says that when they will leave the structure will collapse and with it the British monarchy.

Una delle sezioni che ci è piaciuta di più è stata la White Tower, con la mostra di armature e armi di varie epoche.

One of the sections we liked most was the White Tower, with an exhibition of armours and weapons from various eras.

L'audioguida (4.00£) era molto interessante ed esaustiva, ma, nonostante siamo rimasti circa tre ore, non sono riuscita ad ascoltarla tutta. Per fortuna mi ero comprata la guida cartacea che era sostanzialmente equivalente.

The audio guide (£4.00) was very interesting and exhaustive, but even though we stayed about three hours, I din't manage to hear it all. Fortunately I had bought the paper guide that was basically the same.

Abbiamo pranzato da Wasabi, una catena di fast food giapponese che mi piace molto perché unisce prezzi bassi e buona qualità. Abbiamo preso maki misti, ma ho anche finalmente provato il mio primo pokè (un piatto hawaiano fatto da pesce marinato e altri ingredienti misti), che mi è piaciuto molto. Da bere ginger beer.

We had lunch at Wasabi, a Japanese fast food chain that I like very much because the prices are low and the quality is good. We got mixed maki, but I also finally tried my first pokè (a Hawaiian dish made from marinated fish and other mixed ingredients), which I really liked. To drink I had ginger beer.

Ci ha raggiunto la nostra amica Clyo, che vive a Londra e su nostra richiesta si è improvvisata guida turistica e ci ha portato a visitare la zona di Temple, quartier generale dei cavalieri templari fino al 1312, anno in cui l'ordine fu sciolto. L'area passò poi ai cavalieri Ospitalieri che iniziarono ad affittarla agli avvocati. Ancora oggi Middle Temple e Inner Temple ospitano due delle quattro associazioni professionali inglesi di cui deve essere membro ogni avvocato di Londra. Infatti si trova vicino alla Royal Court of Justice. Per questo è una zona molto chic, piena di studi di avvocati, tranquilla e pulita.

We met our friend Clyo, who lives in London and who at our request improvised herself tour guide and took us to visit the Temple area, the headquarters of the Knights Templar until 1312, when the order was dissolved. The area then passed to the Hospitaller kinghts who began to rent it to lawyers. Even today, Middle Temple and Inner Temple host two of the four English professional associations every lawyer o London must be a member of. Indeed it is located near the Royal Court of Justice. This is why it is a very chic area, full of law firms, quiet and clean.

La chiesa di Temple è divisa in due parti, una circolare, ispirata al Tempio di Gerusalemme e consacrata dal patriarca di Gerusalemme nel 1185, e una seconda a pianta rettangolare consacrata nel 1240. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale è stata gravemente danneggiata dai bombardamenti aerei tedeschi, per cui la chiesa che si vede oggi è in gran parte ricostruita.

Rimane comunque impressionante, soprattutto le tombe. La visita costa (5£).

Temple Church is divided into two parts, a circular one, inspired by the Temple of Jerusalem and consecrated by the patriarch of Jerusalem in 1185, and a second rectangular one consecrated in 1240. In the second World War it severely damaged by the German air raids, so the church we see today is largely rebuilt.

However, it's still impressive, in particular the tombs. The visit costs (£5).

Da lì abbiamo camminato fino alla Court of Justice, in un'area davvero molto bella, incontrando case tradizionali sottilissime e la statua di un drago.

From there we walked to the Royal Court of Justice, in a really beautiful area with thin traditional houses and the statue of a dragon.

La Royal Court of Justice è ospitata da un bellissimo edificio gotico vittoriano inaugurato nel 1882. Si può visitare gratuitamente, ma non si possono fare foto all'interno. Dell'interno sono interessanti il salone d'ingresso e le esposizioni di abiti di avvocati e giudici (un sacco di parrucche), mentre le aule non sono niente di speciale.

The Royal Court of Justice is hostess by a beautiful victorian gothic palace, opened in 1882. It Can be visited for free, but it's forbidden to take photos inside. Of the interior, the most interesting parts are the hall and the exhibition of the clothes of the legal professionale (there were a lot of wigs). The courts were nothing special.

Da lì siamo andati in 17 Gough Square a vedere la statua di Hodge, amato gatto del dottor Samuel Johnson, famoso critico letterario, poeta, saggista, biografo e lessicografo britannico vissuto nel XVIII secolo. La statua risale al 1997 per ricordare l'amore del dottore verso gli animali, inconsueto per l'epoca.

From there we went to 17 Gough Square to see the statue of Hodge, the beloved cat of Dr. Samuel Johnson, a famous literary critic, poet, essayist, biographer and British lexicographer who lived in the eighteenth century. The statue dates back to 1997 to remember the doctor's love for animals, unusual for the time.

Abbiamo camminato fino a Soho. La città era davvero bella con ancora le luminarie di Natale. Ci siamo imbattuti anche nel Palace Theatre, che ospitava lo spettacolo "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". Il libro non mi è piaciuto moltissimo, però dello spettacolo teatrale ho sentito dire ottime cose, ad avere un budget meno ridotto avrei provato a prenotare.

We walked to Soho. The city was really beautiful with the Christmas decorations still on. We also came across the Palace Theater, which hosted the show "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". I didn't like the book very much, but I heard some good things about the theater show, have a smaller budget and I would have tried a reservation.

Siamo arrivati troppo presto per cena e troppo tardi per trovare ancora musei aperti, così Clyo mi ha iniziata ai misteri di TK Maxx, catena americana che vende abiti (ma anche accessori, cosmetici e prodotti da casa) nuovi, ma di stagioni passate a prezzi ribassati. Si trovano anche capi di gran marca.

Io ho provato mezzo negozio senza comprare niente (vi farò vedere le mie esplorazioni in un post successivo). In compenso mi sono aggiudicata due vestiti di Clyo veramente carinissimi, uno viola a piegoline e uno blu con il corpetto di pizzo.

We arrived too early for dinner and too late to find museums open, so Clyo initiated me to the mysteries of TK Maxx, an American chain that sells new clothes but also accessories, cosmetics and household products, for really cheap because they are of past seasons. There are also designer clothes.

I tried on half the shop without buying anything (I'll show you my explorations in a later post). On the other hand I got two really cute dresses from Clyo, a purple one with pleats and a blue one with a lace bodice.

Abbiamo fatto anche un giretto nella Chinatown londinese comprando e mangiando dei mochi al cocco.

We also walked in London's Chinatown, buying and eating coconut mochi.

Abbiamo cenato con la mia amica Prociona e i vari mariti al ristorante malese Rasa Sayang, in 5 Macclesfield St. Io ho preso dei funghi fritti e dei noodles al curry e assaggiato un po' dei piatti degli altri. Non male, ma non ci ha entusiasmato. I prezzi erano contenuti.

We had dinner with my friend Prociona and our husbands at the Malasian restaurant Rasa Sayang, in 5 Macclesfield St. I took fried mushrooms and curry noodles and tasted some of the other dishes. Not bad, but it did not impress us. The prices were contained.

Ci siamo consolati con dei favolosi dolci asiatici nella caffetteria preferita della Prociona. Io ho provato una zuppa di cocco calda con pezzi di banana che era davvero ottima, proverò a replicarla.

We comfoted ourselves with fabulous Asian sweets in Prociona's favourite coffee shop. I tried a warm coconut soup with pieces of banana that was really good, I'll try to replicate it.

Birthday trip to London: day 1

Per il mio trentesimo compleanno mi sono regalata un viaggio a Londra con mio marito per vedere gli Studios di Harry Potter grazie alla mia amica Prociona e da suo marito che ci hanno ospitato.

Abbiamo volato con Ryan Air e, fedele alla reputazione della compagnia, il nostro volo è arrivato con un'ora di ritardo. Per fortuna ci hanno caricato a bordo del pullman National Express anche se avevamo i biglietti per quello dell'ora precedente.

Siamo passati a mettere giù le valigie dalla Prociona e siamo stati raggiunti per un tè dalla nostra amica Clyo con cui eravamo d'accordo per andare al Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood, il più grande museo del mondo dedicato all'infanzia.

For my thirtieth birthday I treated myself to a trip to London with my husband to see the Harry Potter Studios, thanks to my friend Prociona and her husband who hosted us.

We flew with Ryan Air and, faithful to the company's reputation, our flight arrived an hour late. Luckyly, National Express accepted us on a bus even if we had tickets for an hour before.

We went to put down our suitcases at Prociona's and there we were joined for a tea by our friend  Clyo with whom we had agreed to go to the Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood, the world's largest museum dedicated to childhood.

Ho scoperto cose interessantissime, come il fatto che in epoca vittoriana si desse l'oppio ai neonati perché si pensava che facesse loro bene dormire molto.

I discovered very interesting things, such as the fact that in the Victorian era toddlers were given opium because it was thought that it was good for them to sleep a lot.

Ho particolarmente amato l'esibizione di orsacchiotti, in particolare quello "operato" dal bambino che lo possedeva, poi diventato veterinario e quello a cui il proprietario scriveva cartoline.

I particularly loved the exhibition about teddy bears, in particular the one "operated" by the child who owned it, who, when he grew up, became a vet and the one to whom the owner wrote postcards.

Ho trovato favolose anche le dettagliatissime case di bambole vari paesi europei e varie epoche.

I found awesome also the very detailed doll houses from various European Countries and various ages.

Ci hanno dovuto sbattere fuori perché il museo stava chiudendo. Abbiamo recuperato Prociona e marito e siamo andati a mangiare da Efes, un ristorante turco molto buono. Abbiamo diviso gli antipasti misti e ci siamo scambiati assaggi del resto. Era tutto ottimo, ma ho trovato particolarmente buoni i piatti con doner di agnello, in particolare quello con yogurt e salsa anatolica.

Io e la Pelosa Metà abbiamo speso poco più di 30 sterline (comunque sul sito si trova il menù con i prezzi).

We had to go because the museum was closing. We met with Prociona and her husband and went to have dinner at Efes, a very good Turkish restaurant. We split the mixed appetizers and we exchanged tastes of the rest. Everything was great, but I found particularly good the dishes with lamb doner, especially the one with yogurt and Anatolian sauce.

The Hairy Half and I spent just over 30 pounds (however, on the site you can find the menu with the prices).

Siamo tornati a casa usando l'Uber, che per i brevi tragitti a Londra è più conveniente della metropolitana.

La zona dove abitano i nostri amici è un quartiere dove abitano moltissimi immigrati del Bangladesh, ma anche sapendolo non mi sarei mai aspettata di trovare in un giardinetto all'inglese una statua del fondatore del moderno stato del Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman! E con questa nota di colore locale si è chiusa la prima giornata del nostro viaggio.

We returned home using the Uber, which in London is cheaper than the tube for the short distances.

The area where our friends live is a neighborhood where live many Bangladeshi immigrants, but even knowing it, I never expected to find a statue of the founder of the modern state of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in a little English garden! And with this note of local colour, the first day of our trip ended.

Cuore di cane/Heart of a Dog

"Cuore di cane" (Собачье Сердце) è un romanzo del 1925 di Michail Afanas'evič Bulgakov. Dello scrittore russo avevo già letto "Uova fatali" e il mio amato "Il maestro e Margherita", quindi sono andata a colpo sicuro.
Questo è un romanzo sottile sottile, che prende in giro il nuovo uomo sovietico proprio al culmine della NEP, la Nuova Politica Economica di Lenin.
Il protagonista della prima parte del libro è un cane randagio che viene adottato da un ricco chirurgo. Il cane si sente in paradiso, ma l'uomo non l'ha sottratto alla sua misera condizione senza secondi fini: infatti vuole sperimentare su di lui un'operazione rivoluzionaria per ringiovanire il corpo umano. La seconda parte del libro narra attraverso finti appunti e note di diario le incredibili conseguenze di questo esperimento.

L'ho trovato un libro molto brillante, avvincente e con un umorismo che non risparmia nessuno. A livello di scrittura, la parte più interessante è sicuramente l'inizio, visto che la vicenda viene narrata dal punto di vista del cane, anche se il cambio successivo è funzionale alla trama. Direi che è un classico che è invecchiato benissimo, accessibile anche a chi abbia solo un'infarinatura della storia della Russia sovietica.
Nota a margine: sono rimasta affascinata dalla descrizione dei pasti del professore.
Lo consiglio senz'altro.

"Heart of a Dog" (Собачье Сердце) is a 1925 novel by Michail Afanas'evič Bulgakov. Of this Russian writer I had already read "The Fatal Eggs" and my beloved "The Master and Margherita", so this book was a safe shot.
It is a slim novel that teases the new Soviet man just at the height of the NEP, Lenin's New Economic Policy.
The protagonist of the first part of the book is a stray dog who is adopted by a wealthy surgeon. The dog feels in paradise, but the man has not saved it from his miserable condition without ulterior motives: in fact, he wants to try a revolutionary operation to rejuvenate the human body on him. The second part of the book narrates through fake notes and journal entries the incredible consequences of this experiment.
I found it a very brilliant, compelling book with a humor that does not spare anyone. At a writing level, the most interesting part is definitely the beginning, as the story is told from the dog's point of view, although the change in the second part is functional to the plot. I would say that it is a classic that aged very well, accessible even to people who don't know much about the history of Soviet Russia.
By the way I was fascinated by the description of the professor's meals.
I would definitely recommend it.

Kingsman

Con l'uscita del secondo capitolo e tutto l'hype che ha scatenato, mi sono decisa a vedere "Kingsman - Secret Service" (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Si tratta di un film del 2014 di Matthew Vaughn, ispirato alla miniserie a fumetti del 2012 "The Secret Service", sceneggiata da Mark Millar e disegnata da Dave Gibbons. Sia il film sia il fumetto prendono fortemente ispirazione dai classici dello spionaggio, soprattutto i film di James Bond.
Questa è la trama: l'agente segreto Harry Hart (uno stilosissimo Colin Firth) decide di dare al teppistello Eggsy la possibilità di entrare nel gruppo di spionaggio internazionale Kingsman, sia perché vede in lui del potenziale, sia per ripagare un debito verso il suo defunto padre.
I due dovranno affrontare una terribile minaccia per l'umanità...
Il film alterna con ottimo ritmo scene d'azione truzzissime, ma magistrali e un umorismo non sempre delicato, ma che colpisce nel segno.
Il difetto più grande è l'antagonista: in questo caso ho trovato la recitazione di Samuel L. Jackson eccessiva.
Nota di merito per i costumi delle spie che sono il paradiso del gentiluomo inglese, ci sono andata matta.
Si tratta di un film d'intrattenimento nel suo genere molto ben fatto, che accenna addirittura di sfuggita un paio di tematiche non proprio stupide.
Non vedo l'ora di vedere il secondo film della saga!

With the release of the second chapter and all the hype that it triggered, I decided to watch "Kingsman: The Secret Service". It is a 2014 movie by Matthew Vaughn, inspired by "The Secret Service", a 2012 comic miniseries, written by Mark Millar and drawn by Dave Gibbons. Both the film and the comic are strongly inspired by spy classics, in particular by James Bond's movies.
This is the plot: the secret agent Harry Hart (a very stylish Colin Firth) decides to give to the thug Eggsy a chance to enter Kingsman's international espionage group, both because he sees in him some potential, and to repay a debt towards his dead father.
The two have to face a terrible threat for humanity...
The film alternates with excellent rhythm exaggerated, but masterful action scenes, and a humor not always delicate, but that strikes its target.
The biggest defect is the antagonist: in this case I found the acting of Samuel L. Jackson excessive.
A note of merit for the spy costumes that are an English gentleman's paradise, I went nuts over them.
It is a very well-done entertainment film, which even manage to touch lightly a couple of not really stupid themes.
I can not wait to watch the second movie of the saga!

Baywatch

"Baywatch" è un film del 2017 diretto da Seth Gordon, ispirato all'omonima serie tv degli anni '90.
Dal trailer arrogantissimo già si capisce il livello intellettivo del film. Se non si trattasse di un'evidente parodia (che ha gioco facile viste le evidenti falle della serie e l'effetto nostalgia), sarebbe un film bruttino, il classico tette, muscoli, esplosioni e inseguimenti, con una trama risibile in cui bagnini combattono i mercanti di droga e un novellino trova il suo posto nel gruppo.
Il lato parodico è ben fatto e divertentissimo, con sollevamento pesi usando frigoriferi, bagnine che corrono al rallentatore, comparsate dei vecchi protagonisti e molto altro. Il vero difetto del film è che è fin troppo poco e che i momenti migliori sono quelli dei trailer.
La recitazione è perfetta per il genere di film e Zac Efron e The Rock sono una rivelazione nel loro ruolo.
Niente male per saziare voglie d'estate e di trash.

From the arrogant trailer you can already understand the intellectual level of the film. If it weren't an obvious parody (which has an easy target in the flaws of the series and the nostalgic effect), it would be a gross movie, the classic tits, muscles, explosions and chases, with a laughable plot in which lifeguards fight drug dealers and a novice find his place in the group.
The parodic side is well done and funny, with weight lifting using refrigerators, sexy female lifeguards running in slow motion, cameos of the old protagonists and much more. The real problem of the film is that the comic parts are too little and that the best moments are those of the trailers.
The acting is perfect for the kind of film and Zac Efron and The Rock are a revelation in their role.
A good film to satiate summer and trash cravings.

"So Yesterday" è un romanzo del 2004 di Scott Westerfeld, uno dei miei autori di young adult preferiti. E' il suo terzo romanzo e quello che lo ha fatto emergere.
Ha vinto un Victorian Premier's Award ed è anche sulla lista dei migliori young adult della American Library Association. Sono stati venduti i diritti per un film, che però non è ancora stato realizzato.
Il protagonista, il diciassettenne Hunter, è un "cool hunter", un cacciatore di tendenze di New York. Un giorno, durante le sue ricerche, incontra Jen e rimane affascinato dai suoi lacci delle scarpe e da lei, tanto da portarla al focus group del pomeriggio, dove insieme ad altri giovani trendy, ha il compito di analizzare il nuovo spot di una famosa ditta di scarpe. Ma, come Hunter aveva già intuito, Jen non è una semplice trendsetter, è un'Innovatrice e in quanto tale è in grado di vedere particolari che gli altri non vedono. I suoi commenti sullo spot finiscono per coinvolgerli in uno strano mistero...
Ho adorato questo libro sia per com'è scritto, sia per come sviscera il mondo della moda e del cool proponendo soluzioni non banali, sia per gli aneddoti interessanti che fornisce, sia per la psicologia assolutamente credibile del protagonista.
Lo consiglio senz'altro per voi o per eventuali figli, per iniziare a craccare il codice del marketing divertendosi.

"So Yesterday" is a 2004 novel by Scott Westerfeld, one of my favorite young adult authors. It's his third novel and the one that made him famous.
It won a Victorian Premier's Award and is also on the list of the best young adults of the American Library Association. The rights for a movie have been sold, but it has not been made yet.
The protagonist, 17-year-old Hunter, is a cool hunter. One day, during his research, he meets Jen and is fascinated by her shoe laces and her, so he brings her to the afternoon focus group, where along with other trendy youngsters he has to analize the new commercial of a famous shoes company. But, as Hunter had already guessed, Jen is not just a trendsetter, she is an Innovator and as such she is able to see details that others aren't able to see. Her comments on the spot end up involving them in a strange mystery...
I loved this book for its writing style, for the way it draws the world of fashion and cool offering non banal solutions, for the interesting anecdotes it provides and for the absolutely credible psychology of the protagonist.
I would definitely recommend it for you or for your sons, to start cracking the code of marketing while having fun.

Amami lo stesso/Please Love the Useless Me (Aya Nakahara)

"Amami lo stesso" (in originale "Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai") è un manga josei (quindi dedicato ad un pubblico di donne adulte) di Aya Nakahara, pubblicato da Shueisha sulla rivista "You" a partire dall'aprile 2013. Il fumetto è concluso e conta un totale di 10 tankobon. Tuttavia l'autrice ha già annunciato un seguito, che sarà sottotitolato "Returns". Nel 2016 da questo manga è stato tratto un telefilm (che recensirò a breve).

In Italia "Amami lo stesso" è stato pubblicato da Panini Comics nella collana Planet Shojo.

La protagonista è Michiko Shibata, una donna che si avvicina ai fatidici 30 anni, è squattrinata e non ha un vero fidanzato, limitandosi a mantenere ragazzi giovani e carini. Michiko all'improvviso perde il lavoro e si trova nei guai. Ad aiutarla sarà la persona più improbabile, il suo odiatissimo ex-capo, che le offre un lavoretto part-time nel caffè che ha appena aperto. Ma l'eccessiva ingenuità (che sconfina nel'idiozia) della ragazza, la spingerà a cacciarsi in guai ancora più grossi.

Si tratta del primo josei dell'autrice, che avevo già adorato in "Lovely Complex", sua opera più famosa e mio shojo preferito.

Come in "Lovely Complex", il manga è caratterizzato da un umorismo scanzonato, che si incentra soprattutto sulla stupidità della protagonista, sul suo amore irrefrenabile per la carne e sul suo bizzarro rapporto con il capo, che la aiuta, ma la maltratta anche costantemente.

E' una storia di formazione abbastanza banale e con un finale prevedibile, ma lo svolgimento riesce a non annoiare mai, grazie anche a comprimari memorabili come Akira (il mio personaggio preferito!), la scorbutica ex fidanzata del capo o l'adorabile Mogami, collega di Michico. Altri personaggi sono meno riusciti, in particolare il fratello del capo, che risulta decisamente eccessivo, ma sono una minoranza.

Le situazioni sono abbastanza realistiche, l'autrice riesce in gran parte ad evitare eccessi tipici degli shojo. Ci sono comunque, anche per una questione di comicità, situazioni paradossali. Mi ha dato un po' fastidio la scelta di una protagonista che non solo è vergine, ma che non è nemmeno mai stata baciata: mi è sembrata un po' troppo improbabile rispetto alla vita reale di una ventinovenne, ma anche troppo puritana rispetto al target adulto dei lettori.

Ho trovato molto fastidioso anche l'atteggiamento dei personaggi nei riguardi del matrimonio, ma temo che sia abbastanza realistico rispetto al Giappone, soprattutto quello di qualche anno fa.

I punti forti di "Amami lo stesso", quindi sono l'umorismo e i personaggi principali. Anche se all'inizio mi ha un po' depressa (ho ventinove anni e sono più o meno disoccupata), man mano che la pubblicazione procedeva mi sono trovata a leggere questo fumetto con sempre più allegria, finché non è diventata una lettura che mi metteva il buonumore.

Se vi piacciono i manga allegri e un po' ingenui ve lo consiglio senz'altro, specialmente se volete provare un approccio un po' più leggero allo josei.

The protagonist is Michiko Shibata, a woman who approaches the fateful age of 30, and who is poor and does not have a true boyfriend, as she just supports young and cute guys. Michiko suddenly loses her work and is in trouble. The one to help her is the most unlikely person, her hated ex-boss, who offers her a part-time job in the coffee he has just opened. But the excessive naivety of the girl will push her into even greater troubles.

This is the first josei of the author, whom I adored in "Lovely Complex", her most famous work and my favorite shojo.

Like in "Lovely Complex", the manga is characterized by a funny tone, which focuses mainly on the hero's stupidity, her love for meat, and her bizarre relationship with her boss, who helps her but also constantly mistreats her.

It's a fairly banal coming of age story with a predictable ending, but its developement is never boring, thanks to memorable characters like Akira (my favorite!), the ill-tempered ex-girlfriend of the boss or the adorable Mogami, a colleague of Michico. Other characters are less successful, especially the boss's brother, who is definitely excessive, but they are a minority.

The situations are quite realistic, the author largely succeeds in avoiding the typical excesses of the shojo genre. There are, however, paradoxical situations, even because of the funny tone. It bothered me a bit the choice of a protagonist who is not only a virgin, but who has never even been kissed: it seemed me a little improbable for a 29-year-old woman but also too puritan for a target of adult readers.

I also found the attitude of the characters about marriage very annoying, but I'm afraid it's pretty realistic about Japan, especially a few years ago.

So, the strong points of "Please Love the Useless Me" are the humor and the main characters. Even though I got a bit depressed at the beginning (I'm twenty-nine and I'm pretty much unemployed) as the publication went on I found myself reading this comic with increasing happiness until it became a reading that put me in a great mood.

If you like funny and a bit naive manga I'll definitely recommend it to you, especially if you want to try a lighter approach to josei.
