I miei regali di Natale 2017/My 2017 Christmas presents

Finalmente riesco a farvi vedere i miei regali di Natale di quest'anno.

Mio marito mi ha regalato Dixit, uno dei giochi in scatola più belli di sempre, "Macerie Prime", l'ultimo libro a fumetti di Zerocalcare, e un cuscino in memory foam per il mio torcicollo.

Finally I can show you my Christmas presents of this year.

My husband bought me Dixit, one of the most beautiful board games ever, "Macerie Prime", the latest comic book by the italian comic artist Zerocalcare, and a memory foam pillow for my stiff neck.

I miei genitori mi hanno regalato l'abbonamento dei mezzi, ma mia madre ha voluto regalarmi anche un portafoglio bellissimo con disegni di alberi e animaletti della foresta, un set omaggio di borsa, penna e caramelle del ristorante giapponese Poporoya, uno dei migliori di Milano, una ghirlanda con gli orsetti di quando ero piccola e un barattolo di gelatina canadese all'acero.

My parents paid me Milan yearly public transportation card, but my mother also wanted to give me a beautiful wallet with drawings of forest trees and animals, a freebie set of bag, pen and candies of the Japanese restaurant Poporoya, one of the best in Milan, a wreath with bears from when I was a kid and a can of Canadian maple jelly.

Una signora gentilissima che lavora per i miei genitori mi ha regalato il set della Roberts con il tonico all'acqua di rose che mi piace tanto e la nuova crema viso alle rose che volevo provare da un po, ma costava troppo. La portinaia di casa dei miei genitori mi ha regalato un dolce cingalese molto buono.

A very kind lady who works for my parents gave me the set with the rose water tonic I like so much and the new face cream with roses by Roberts that I wanted to try from a while (but it was too expensive). The housekeeper of my parents' house gave me a very good Sinhalese cake.

Invece di giocare alla tombola, quest'anno abbiamo giocato a Dixit a premi. Ho vinto delle pantofole da viaggio carinissime, nere a roselline, e un temperamatite a soffietto rosa di Tiger.

Instead of playing bingo, this year we played Dixit with prizes. I won some cute travel slippers, black with little roses, and a pink folding pencil sharpener by Tiger.

Ancora regali di Natale/More Christmas presents

Ho ricevuto un sacco di altri regali di Natale dagli amici e parenti che non ho visto prima di Natale. Non so se siano davvero finiti (potrebbero arrivarmene un altro paio), ma ve li mostro subito perché fra poco comincerò a mostrarvi quelli di compleanno (tutto subito e poi più niente...).

La mia amica V-chan è stata in Giappone in viaggio di nozze e mi ha portato (in un bellissimo sacchetto degli Avengers) un sacco di bellissimi regali: un paio di calze dei Sumikko Gurashi (personaggi della San-x) con il mio personaggio preferito, il coniglietto di tenpura. Poi mi ha portato anche un set di carta da lettere, un tacquino di Cinnamoroll e una sorta di borsa tradizionale giapponese (di quelle da legare in cima ad un bastone).

I received a lot of other Christmas presents from friends and relatives who I didn't manage to meet before Christmas. I do not know if they are really the last ones (I might get another couple of them), but I'll show them right away because soon I will begin to show my birthday ones (all at once and then nothing more...).

My friend V-chan went to Japan on her honeymoon and took me (in a beautiful Avengers bag) a lot of beautiful gifts: a pair of Sumikko gurashi (San-X characters of) socks with my favourite character, the tenpura bunny. She brought me a set of writing paper, a Cinnamoroll notes, and a kind of traditional Japanese bag (of the kind to tie on the top of a stick).

La mia amica Ade mi ha fatto tantissimi regali tutti a tema zenzero: zenzero candito, marmellata di arance e zenzero, una tavoletta di cioccolata fondente con zenzero candito bio e la tisana zenzero e ibisco della Yogi Tea (l'ho già assaggiata ed è buonissima!).

My friend Ade gave me many ginger themed gifts: candied ginger, orange and ginger marmalade, a dark chocolate bar with organic candied ginger and an Hibiscus and ginger herbal tea by Yogi Tea (I've already tried it and it's delicious!).

La mia amica Siobhan mi ha regalato il romanzo "Mosaico Mediorientale" di Patrizia Fabbri, che segue la vita di sei famiglie fra Israele/Palestina, Italia e Stati Uniti nel corso di un secolo. Sembra molto interessante!

La Donna Camél mi ha regalato del miele al tartufo (molto indicato per formaggi... sto già sbavando!).

My friend Siobhan gave me "Mosaico Mediorientale" (Middle-Eastern Mosaic) a novel by Patrizia Fabbri, which follows the lives of six families between Israel/Palestine, Italy and the United States over a century. It seems very interesting!

La donna Camel gave me truffle honey (very suitable for cheese... I'm already drooling!).

La mia prozia mi ha regalato "Gli occhi di Venezia", un romanzo storico-romantico, ambientato a Venezia a fine XVI secolo. Potrebbe essere molto interessante perché l'autore, Alessandro Barbero, è uno storico specializzato in storia militare e storia del Medioevo. Mi ha regalato anche della crema di marroni (ora devo solo ritrovare la ricetta di una torta favolosa con questa marmellata e il cocco che mi ha fatto una volta un mio professore).

My great-aunt gave me "Gli occhi di Venezia" (The eyes of Venice), an historical-romantic novel set in Venice at the end of the sixteenth century. It could be very interesting because the author, Alessandro Barbero, is an historian specializing in the military history and the history of the Middle Ages. He also gave me chestnut jam (now I just have to find the recipe of a fabulous cake with this jam and coconut that one of my professors made me once).

Concludiamo l'elenco con un paio di cose che più che regali sono gentili concessioni: sono riuscita a sottrarre a mia madre le confezioni di Raffaello con cui aveva decorato l'albero di Natale e due tazze da tisana che le invidiavo da anni.

Let's end the list with a couple of things that more than gifts are kind concessions: I managed to get from my mother the packs of Raffaello with which she decorated the Christmas tree and two cups for herbal tea that I envied her from years.

I miei regali di Natale 2016/My 2016 Christmas Presents

Anche quest'anno per Natale ho ricevuto parecchi libri! Ho avuto "In Viaggio per Arda", la raccolta di illustrazioni tolkieniane del bravissimo Fabio Porfidia (vi consiglio di dare un'occhiata al suo sito), "Adulthood is a myth", la prima raccolta dei fumetti pubblicati online da Sarah Andersen (che trovate qui), "La chiave di bronzo", il terzo volume della saga Magisterium di Holly Black e Cassandra Clare, e infine un libro a tema, "La vera storia di Babbo Natale", di Alfio e Michele Maggiolini, un saggio storico-psicologico sulla creazione del personaggio di Babbo Natale.

For Christmas, this year I received several books again! I got "In Viaggio per Arda" (Travelling to Arda), a collection of illustrations of Tolkien's works by the very talented Fabio Porfidia (I recommend you to take a look at his site), "Adulthood is a myth", the first collection of the comics published online by Sarah Andersen (you can find them here), "The Bronze Key", the third volume of the Magisterium saga by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, and a themed book, "La vera storia di Babbo Natale" (The True Story of Santa Claus), by Alfio and Michele Maggiolini, an historical-psicological  essay about the creation of the Santa Claus character.

Ho anche ricevuto un paio di aggeggi tecnologici: mio suocero mi ha regalato una favolosa batteria solare della Oregon Scientific che si carica anche con l'elettricità e ha un sacco di attacchi per smartphone e tablet. Alla tradizionale tombola poi ho vinto una carinissima lucina per lettura notturna che userò soprattutto con il mio vecchio Kindle che non ha la retroilluminazione.

I also received a couple of technological gadgets: my father in law gave me an awesome solar battery by Oregon Scientific that can be charged even with electricity and that has a lot of slots for smartphones and tablets. At the traditional tombola I also won a cute night reading light that I will use especially with my old Kindle that has no light.

Mia nonna mi ha regalato un grembiule da cucina carinissimo (sottovalutando chiaramente la mia capacità di sporcarmi, visto che è solo per la parte inferiore del corpo).

My grandmother gave me a cute kitchen apron (clearly underestimating my ability to get dirty, since it's only for the lower body).

La mia amica Bi mi ha regalato lo stupendo "Notturno: ricettario dei sogni" di Isol, un bellissimo libro su cui scegliere un sogno ogni notte per poi lasciare l'illustrazione corrispondente sotto la luce e scoprire una nuova illustrazione fosforescente da fissare fino ad addormentarsi.

My friend Bi gave me the wonderful "Nocturne: dream recipes" by Isol, a beautiful book from which to choose a dream every night and then leave the corresponding illustration under a light to discover a new phosphorescent illustration to look at until falling asleep.

La mia amica Jules mi ha regalato una carinissima tazza a tema.

Io finalmente ho scartato quegli orecchini che avevo comprato all'open day della scuola giapponese di Milano su cui avevo speso un po' troppo. Ma non sono adorabili con le loro ghiande di stoffa di colori pastello?

I finally unwrapped the earrings I bought at the open day of the Japanese school of Milan on which I had spent a bit too much. But aren't they adorable with their pastel-colored fabric acorns?

Quest'anno ho anche ricevuto un quantitativo spaventoso di cibo, soprattutto di dolci. Ho avuto una tavoletta di cioccolata, dei cioccolatini e un cucchiaino di cioccolata da mio fratello, cioccolatini da mia nonna e mio zio, un mini panettone, chicchi di quinoa ricoperti di cioccolata e una tavoletta di cioccolata dall'amministrazione del mio condominio, caramelle dalla mia quasi cognata e in più ho vinto altra cioccolata alla tombola.

Dagli zii della Val Camonica ho ricevuto anche quest'anno il favoloso filetto del pastore, da un altro zio una bottiglia di vino rosso e da mia madre una bottiglietta di olio al tartufo.

Insomma, anche quest'anno sono stata viziatissima, e non è ancora finita perché fra una cosa e l'altra non sono riuscita a vedere a Dicembre quasi nessuno degli amici con cui scambio regali di Natale, quindi ne devono ancora arrivare!

This year I also received a frightening amount of food, especially sweets. I got a bar of chocolate, chocolates and a chocolate teaspoon from my brother, chocolates from my grandmother and my uncle, a mini panettone, grains of quinoa covered with chocolate and a chocolate bar from the administration of my condo, candy from my almost sister in law and I also won other chocolate at the tombola.

My uncles Val Camonica gave me again a fabulous shepherd's salami, another uncle a bottle of red wine and my mother a bottle of truffle oil.

In short, this year I have been super spoiled, and it is not over yet because between one thing and another in December I didn't manage to meet almost any of the friends with whom I exchange Christmas gifts, so others are yet to come!

Buon San Valentino! Come sapete in Giappone per festeggiarlo le ragazze regalano il cioccolato ai ragazzi che amano (ma ne regalano anche un tipo diverso a famiglia, amici e colleghi), mentre i ragazzi ricambiano il regalo un mese dopo durante il White Day (mi chiedo come si organizzino le coppie omosessuali).

Japan Pulse ha pubblicato i tipi di cioccolato più originali venduti quest'anno in Giappone, vi riporto qui i miei preferiti (quello che riceverei più volentieri è quello a dinosauro). Vi consiglio di andare sul blog a vedere anche gli altri!

Happy Valentine's Day! As you know, to celebrate it in Japan the girls give chocolate to the boys they love (but also give a different kind of chocolate to family, friends and coworkers), while the boys reciprocate gift a month later during the White Day (I wonder how same-sex couples organize themselves).

Japan Pulse published the most original types of chocolate sold this year in Japan, I report here my favorites (the one I'd like to receive more is the dinosaur). I recommend going on the blog to see the others!

Mostra di Cargo/Cargo's exhibition

Venerdì scorso c'è stata la mostra di Cargo, il collettivo di fumettisti di cui faccio parte, delle 12 illustrazioni originali del calendario-ricettario 2016 che abbiamo fatto in collaborazione con il Bar Lucio. E' stata molto carina, una vera soddisfazione. E il calendario è venuto fuori davvero carino. Voglio comprarne un paio di copie da usare come regali di Natale.

On Friday, Cargo, the cartoonists collective I'm part of, made an exhibition of the 12 original illustrations of the 2016 calendar-cookbook that made did in collaboration with Bar Lucio. It was very nice, a real satisfaction. And the calendar came out really nice. I want to buy a pair of copies to use as Christmas gifts.

Ho anche preso la famosa cioccolata calda di Lucio. E' deliziosa, densa e cremosa, e viene servita insieme a peperoncino e granella di nocciole da aggiungere nella quantità desiderata. Se siete di Milano o dintorni ve la consiglio assolutamente, il bar si trova in via Boncompagni 36.

I also took the famous hot chocolate made by Lucio. It 's delicious, thick and creamy, and is served with chilli and chopped hazelnuts to add in the desired amount. If you are in Milan or surroundings I absolutely recommend it, the bar is located in 36, Boncompagni street.

Hanukkah

Hannukkia improvvisata... e albero!/Improvised hannukkia... and tree!

Oggi è l'ultimo giorno di Hanukkah, auguri a chi lo festeggia!

I miei genitori non avevano mai assaggiato i latkes, le tipiche frittelle di patate e cipolle preparate dagli ebrei dell'Europa dell'Est durante questa festività, così li ho invitati a cena per mangiarli insieme. Poi si sono aggiunte anche le mie nonne ed è diventata una festa vera e propria.

Today is the last day of Hanukkah, hag sameach to those who celebrate it!

My parents had never tried latkes, the traditional potato and onions pancakes prepared by the Eastern Europe Jews during this holyday, so I invited them to dinner to eat them together. Then I ended up inviting also my grandmothers and it become a real party.

Ho usato come al solito questa ricetta per i latkes raddoppiando le dosi per la pastella. Ho moltiplicato le dosi per due per il numero di persone presenti, ma è venuto davvero troppo impasto, ne è avanzata circa la metà (trasformata poi in una torta salata). Sarà anche che quest'anno ho approfittato della presenza di ospiti per servire le frittelle con panna acida e salmone, una vera goduria! Ma forse è avanzato impasto anche perché ho offerto un antipasto a base di patatine blu (trovate all'Esselunga in sconto, hanno lo stesso sapore delle patatine normali, ma fanno scena) e cracker all'aneto, aringhe marinate e caviar, tutto dell'Ikea. Sia le aringhe sia il caviar hanno un gusto dolciastro quindi possono risultare strani ad un palato italiano standard, ma i cracker sono piaciuti proprio a tuttti!

For the latkes I used this recipe as usual doubling the doses of the batter. I multiplied the two people doses for the number of people present, but the result was really too much, about half of it was left over (but afterwards it was turned into a pie). It may be that this year I took advantage of the of guests to serve the latkes with sour cream and salmon, a real pleasure! But maybe the dough exceeded the needs also because I offered an appetizer of blue chips (theu have the same flavor of regular chips, but they have much more impact) and dill crackers, pickled herring and a caviar paste, all from Ikea. Both the herring and caviar have a sweet taste so they can be strange for a standard Italian palate, but everyone just loved the crackers!

Durante il dopocena ho cercato su YouTube della musica a tema e ho trovato questo video carinissimo di un gruppo che canta a cappella canzoni ebraiche tradizionali. Il secondo tizio da sinistra secondo me assomiglia un po' a Leonard di Big Bang Theory.

During the after dinner I searched for themed music on YouTube and I found this nice video of a group that sings traditional Jewish songs a cappella. The second guy from the left in my opinion looks a little like Leonard of Big Bang Theory.

Una mia amica mi ha anche fatto conoscere questa canzone carinissima a tema che pare sia andata tantissimo su internet (quante cose che non so).

A friend of mine also made me find out about this nice themed song. It seems it became viral on the internet some time ago (how many things I don't know).

Anche se non abbiamo mai festeggiato questa ricorrenza in famiglia (tranne una volta riuscita anche maluccio), mia madre è stata così carina da farmi un regalino, della cioccolata di Modica al peperoncino comprata al mercatino di Amnesty.

Although we never celebrated this holyday in my family (except once that wasn't a success), my mother was so nice to buy me a gift, chilli Modica chocolate bought at an Amnesty market.

A weekend in Turin: saturday

Lo scorso weekend io e la mia Pelosa Metà siamo andati a Torino, ospitati da dei nostri amici, in occasione di Cioccolatò e del Torino Film Festival (ma con piani che includevano molto altro).

Last weekend my Hairy Half and I went to Turin, hosted by two friends of us, to go to Cioccolatò and the Turin Film Festival (but with plans that included much more).

Visto che siamo arrivati verso ora di pranzo, abbiamo iniziato con un bel panino da L'accademia del panino, in via Sant'Ottavio, a due passi dal centro. Avevano tantissimi tipi di panini, tramezzini e club sandwich (le porzioni di questi ultimi erano giganti) ed è stato difficile scegliere. Alla fine ho diviso con la mia amica Siobahn un panino con pomodori secchi, mozzarella di bufala, pesto, rucola e maionese e uno con finocchiona, bufala, olio extravergine di oliva, maionese. Erano molto buoni e mi è piaciuto che ci abbiano fatto scegliere fra panino morbido o croccante. Ho assaggiato anche i panini degli altri ed erano tutti particolari e interessanti. Anche la birra locale che abbiamo scelto era molto buona, ma non ricordo la marca.

Since we arrived around lunch time, we started with a nice sandwich at L'accademia del panino, in Sant'Ottavio street, a stone's throw from the city center. They had lots of different types of sandwiches and it was hard to choose. Eventually I shared with my friend Siobahn a sandwich with dried tomatoes, mozzarella, pesto, rocket and mayonnaise and one with sausage, mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and mayonnaise. They were very good and I liked the fact that we were given a choice between soft or crunchy bread. I also tasted the sandwiches of the others and they were all special and interesting. Even the local beer that we chose was very good, but I don't remember its brand.

Dalla paninoteca siamo andati al museo egizio, che è stato ristrutturato di recente. I nostri amici avevano comprato i biglietti prima che arrivassimo, e per fortuna! All'ingresso c'era una coda pazzesca. Il biglietto intero era caro, 13€, ma secondo me ne valeva la pena. Nel prezzo era inclusa anche un'audioguida, a tratti noiosa, ma in generale utilissima. C'erano tantissimi reperti estremamente interessanti.

From the sandwich shop we went to the egyptyan museum, which was recently renovated. Luckily our friends bought the tickets before we arrived! At the entrance there was a super long queue. The admission fee was expensive, 13€, but I think it was worth it. The price also included an audio guide, sometimes boring, but generally useful. There were extremely interesting many exhibits.

A parte le mummie, che mi affascinano sempre (anche quelle di animali!), mi hanno colpito particolarmente un gioco e una mappa stellare.

Apart from the mummies, that always fascinate me (even the animals' ones!), I was particularly stricken by a boardgame and a star chart.

Ho prestato particolare attenzione anche ai corredi di sepoltura femminili per cercare di immaginare come fosse vivere a quei tempi e in particolare la moda egiziana.

I paid particular attention to the female burial kits to try to imagine how it was to live in those times and in particular the Egyptian fashion.

Siamo rimasti al museo fino all'orario di chiusura (in pratica ci siamo fatti buttare fuori). Dopo un'ora e mezza sarebbe cominciato il film che volevamo andare a vedere, così abbiamo girato le bancarelle di Cioccolatò, la fiera del cioccolato, per metterci qualcosa nello stomaco prima di entrare in sala. C'erano cose molto bizzarre come il chocokebab, molte cose costavano tanto, ma c'erano anche cose molto belle. La migliore che ho provato è stata la crema spalmabile di cioccolato alla violetta.

We stayed at the museum until closing time (we were practically thrown out). After an hour and a half the film we wanted to go see started, so we went to the Cioccolatò stalls, a chocolate fair, to put something in our stomach before entering the room. There were very bizarre things like chocokebab, many things costed a lot, but there were also very nice things. The best one I tried was the violet flavoured chocolate spread.

Abbiamo approfittato del Torino Film Festival per vedere Strange Days, un film fantascientifico del 1995. Doveva essere rovinato perché si è bloccato in ben due punti, con conseguente tumulto in sala e sparizione dei sottotitoli per qualche minuto una volta ripartito. Onestamente dall'organizzazione del festival mi aspettavo di più (anche se all'entrata ci hanno regalato un gianduiotto).

Per fortuna il film ci è piaciuto moltissimo (lo recensirò per bene in un post a parte).

We took advantage of the Torino Film Festival to watch Strange Days, a 1995 science fiction film. It was probably ruined because it got stuck in two points, with a resulting uproar in the theater and the disappearance of the subtitles for a few minutes once it started again. Honestly I expected more from the festival (although at the entrance we were given a gianduiotto).

Fortunately we loved the film (I'll review it thoroughly in a separate post).

Per concludere la giornata siamo andati in cerca di un posto dove cenare. Purtroppo era piuttosto tardi e pochi locali erano aperti. Abbiamo optato per la Burgheria, un locale all'americana che fa hamburger e patatine. Le ordinazioni venivano prese tramite foglietti da compilare. Il menù aveva poca varietà, ma i panini erano molto buoni. Da segnalare anche le patatine con la buccia (purtroppo non croccantissime) e le birre, anche in questo caso non tante, ma interessanti.

E con quest'ultima botta di colesterolo, la nostra giornata è giunta a conclusione.

To end the day we went looking for a place to have dinner. Unfortunately it was quite late and there werent many places still open. We opted for Burgheria, a United States style place that makes burgers and chips. The orders were made through sheets to fill out. The menu had little variety, but the hamburgers were very good. I liked that the fries still had the skin (unfortunately they weren't super crunchy) and the beers, again not many, but interesting.

And with this last stroke of cholesterol, our day come to an end.
