"A Chinese Life" (Le temps du père) is the artist's autobiography of Li Kunwu, designed by him and written in four hands with the french writer and diplomat P. Ôtié, published in France by Kana in 2009.
It's composed of three volumes: "Le temps du père" (Time of the Father), published in 2009, "Le temps du Parti"(Time of the Party), also published in 2009, and "Le temps de l 'Argent" (Time of the Money), published in 2011, that tell the story of the author and with him of all China.
The book was published in sixteen countries, received the prize of excellence of the Japan Media Art Festival, the Golden Dragon of the Chinese Grand Prize, received two nominations at the Eisner Awards, Château de Cheverny's award for the historic comic book and the public prize at the Rendezvous de Histoire de Blois, the Ouest France du Salon Quai des Bulles audience prize, was pointed out at the Angoulême Comics International Festival and was finalist at the 2017 Terzani Near/Far Prize.
I only read the first wolume, which I will review here.
The narration begins in 1950, with the meeting of the parents of the protagonist, Secretary Li, a Communist Party exponent, and Xiao Tao, a girl living in small village in Yunnan Mountains, in the south of China. It continues with the author's childhood, showing Maoist politics, including moments such as the Great Leap Forward, the famine that followed and the Cultural Revolution, through his child's eyes. The narration is a succession of emotionally charged episodes, often tragic but also funny.
The graphic style has much to do with Maoist propaganda, of which the author has been an important exponent. The comic is in black and white, the style expressive, with grotesque touches, the sign nervous, brush-painted.
The "Chinese" drawings enriches the Chinese point of view of the narrative, giving the reader an even more immersive experience in this fascinating historical and formation tale, perfect for lovers of comics and China.
