Sherlock: l'abominevole sposa/The Abominable Bride

"The abominable bride" is a 90-minute special of the famous BBC series "Sherlock", released in January 2016 (also at the cinemas) and written by its creators, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. Unlike the tv series, which takes place today, the special is set in 1895, in Victorian era of the original Conan Doyle stories. The title is inspired by one of the cases mentioned by the literary Holmes in "The Musgrave Ritual".
Before you I start the review, I need to warn you: it is in continuity with the television series and links the third and fourth seasons. Unlike someone says, I think it's impossible to fully understand outside of the context of the series. This because of some parts of the film (about which I won't say anything not to spoil the surprise), but also because, even if the main mystery is solved, it has an open ending. So if you do not follow the series I strongly recommend to avoid it.
The case on which our heroes investigate in this special is that of a woman who publicly commits suicide in her wedding dress, and then reappears as the author of a series of murders.
The setting makes the characters closer to their literary counterparts, however, even with the changes needed to make them historically appropriate, their characters remains faithful to that of the TV series, as well as the kind of irony used. Even the direction style remains the same, with strong use of special effects such as slow motion, writing superimposed to the video and so on, even though the director is not the usual Paul McGuigan, but Douglas Mackinnon.
I found it an interesting and well done episode (I refuse to consider it a film in its own right). I think it is a good step to restore the vitality to the series based on the titillation of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's fandom and on the open ending that makes the spectator crave for the fourth season. Too bad we'll still have to wait a lot, since it will be released in January 2017.

I really enjoyed this, and it made me even more excited about the new series! Not to spoiler it for anyone else reading, but the explanation of how they all ended up back in time seemed a bit annoying...
