L'assassino, il prete e il portiere/Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All (Jonas Jonasson)

"Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All" is a 2015 novel by Jonas Jonasson, a journalist who became famous for his debut novel "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared" (which I reviewed here), which in 2013 was adapted into movie (which I reviewed here).
Having loved the first book, and, having enjoyed the second, "The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden" (which I reviewed here), I was delighted to receive the third for my birthday and I had high expectations.
"Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All" takes place in the Swedish underworld, between small criminals. The protagonists are a murderer, recently released from prison, the man at the reception of the third category hotel in which he lives and a woman priest who was expelled from her community. This unlikely trio will ally to achieve a higher goal: money.
As in the previous novels, the tone is comic and light thanks to the bizarre character, absurd coincidences and a series of misunderstandings. Again, despite the tone, there are serious reflections, this time about religion, altruism and certain mechanical of Swedish bureaucracy.
Compared to the first books of the author this one lacks the most historic part and the plot takes place in a shorter period of time.
The characters are well made, but I liked them less than those of other novels, possibly because of their cynicism.
I liked "Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All" less than "The Hundred-Year-Old Man" and "The Girl", less captivating and sometimes slow. The plot has a rush forward only at the end, that is so brilliant to elevate all the book.

But people who love stories set in the criminal underworld might like it more than the other novels by Jonasson.
