Il mondo di Coo (Hideji Oda)

Hideji Oda (nato nel 1962) è un fumettista giapponese associato al movimento della Nouvelle Manga che ha riunito autori franco belgi e nipponici, nel tentativo di connettere tipi di narrazione a fumetti diversa e in particolare i racconti di vita realistici giapponesi e il fumetto di genere europeo.

"Il mondo di Coo" (in originale クーの世界, "Kuu no sekai") è probabilmente la sua opera più famosa. In Italia è stata pubblicata da Coconino nel 2002 in due volumi di buona qualità da circa 13€ l'uno.

La protagonista è Renei, una ragazzina giapponese di dodici anni che sta per iniziare le scuole medie e da un anno ha perso il fratello a cui era affezionatissima. Proprio la notte prima dell'inizio della scuola inizia a fare un sogno a puntate in cui si ritrova in un mondo fantastico, in cui incontra un uomo identico a suo fratello e un ragazzo identico ad un suo amico di infanzia Ryota, che però dicono di non conoscerla. Renei inizia a viaggiare con loro in un mondo onirico che però è estremamente realistico, fatto di suoni, odori e sensazioni forti quanto quelli del mondo in cui Renei vive al risveglio. E' un mondo dove si possono vivere esperienze piacevoli, ma anche dolorose.

Man mano che la storia procede, i confini fra il mondo di Coo e il mondo reale si fanno più sfumati.

Il primo volume potrebbe essere autoconclusivo, ma il secondo aggiunge nuovi personaggi, in particolare una misteriosa compagna di scuola di Renei, e nuove situazioni che portano la narrazione ad una conclusione più soddisfacente, tirando le fila di temi che nel primo volume erano solo accennati, anche se non tutto viene spiegato e per la stessa natura misteriosa del mondo di Coo è giusto che sia così. Infatti in giapponese Coo (ku) significa vacuità.

Questo fumetto trova un modo estremamente interessante e originale per raccontare l'elaborazione di un lutto e l'inizio della pubertà, temi difficili e allo stesso tempo tanto fondamentali da essere stati già affrontati milioni di volte.

A livello visivo questo manga straborda di trovate visionarie, come il mastodonte che muove un passo una volta al giorno, o il vecchio saggio sepolto nel terreno fino alla fronte che vive in un gabinetto, il minuscolo re che aspetta su di un muro di sassi di unirsi a qualche avventura, le capre scheletriche e molto altro, da fare invidia ad Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

Il disegno dell'autore è chiaramente giapponese, ma non è il classico stile manga. Il tratto è sporco, con un segno sottile e molto tratteggio, che rende ancora di più l'atmosfera onirica, e sembra esserci una ricerca di realismo interessante, anche se con qualche ingenuità (come i terribili zigomi del fratello).

E' una lettura che per una volta potrebbe piacere sia agli appassionati di manga, sia a chi normalmente preferisce altri tipi di fumetti, sia mainstream sia underground.

Hideji Oda (born 1962) is a Japanese comic artist associated with the movement of the Nouvelle Manga which brought together French, Belgian and Japanese authors, in an attempt to connect different types of storytelling in comics and in particular the Japanese realistic life stories and European genre bound comics.
"Coo's world" (original ク ー の 世界, "Kuu no sekai") is probably his most famous work.
The protagonist is Renei, a japanese girl of twelve who is about to start middle school and a year before lost her brother to whom she was really affectionate. The night before the school starts, she begins to have an episode dream in which she finds herself in a fantasy world, where she meets a man identical to her brother and a boy identical to her childhood friend Ryota, who say they do not know her. Renei begins traveling with them in an oniric world that is at the same time is extremely realistic, made of sounds, smells and sensations as strong as those of the world in which Renei lives when she awakens. It 'a world where you can live pleasant, but also painful experiences.
As the story progresses, the boundaries between the world of Coo and the real world, become thinner.
The first volume may be self-contained, but the second adds new characters, in particular a mysterious classmate of Renei, and new situations that bring the narrative to a more satisfying conclusion, pulling the strings of themes that were only hinted at in the first volume. But not everything is explained by the very nature of the mysterious world of Coo. In fact in Japanese Coo (ku) means emptiness.
This comic is an extremely interesting and original way to tell the elaboration of a loss and the beginning of puberty, issues that are difficult and at the same time so fundamental as to be already been analyzed a million times.
Visually, this manga is visionary, overflowing with ideas that rival with Alice in Wonderland like the mastodon that takes a step once a day, or the wise old man buried in the ground up to the front living in a toilet, the tiny King waiting on a wall of stones to join some adventure, the skeletron faced goats.
The drawings of the author are clearly Japanese, but it isn't the classic manga style. The line is dirty, thin, with a lot of hatching, making the atmosphere even more dreamlike, and there seems to be an interesting quest for realism, though with some ingenuity (as the terrible cheekbones of the brother).
It's a reading that for once could please manga fans, but also those who normally prefer other types of comics, both mainstream is underground.
