Tutorial facile e veloce per fare delle corna da cervo/Quick and easy tutorial to make deer antlers

Difficulty: Easy
Material: wire, aluminum, masking tape, paint

This year for Halloween I decided to make a fairy/deer/satyr costume. Since I decided at the last moment I had to choose a fast strategy to make it (not so fast, but there are times that can be cut down). As a base I used this tutorial from The Crafty Housewife, but I made some changes to make the end result more robust and easier to use.

The first step is to build a structure with the wire in the shape of the final result you want. My structure is fairly flat and easy, but you can do something much more complex and three-dimensional.

The second step is to cover the frame with aluminium foil to make the horns thicker and cylindrical.

Then you have to cover the aluminum with paper tape, in order to make it easier to paint.

At this point you can paint them. Since I'm doing renovations, I have buckets of paint around, so I decided to do it the rough way and dipped in one of them the antlers, which then I hung up from the wire to the clothesline using clothespins. This method doesn't give a good result as it highlits the bumps and involves much longer drying times than those of normal acrylic, so if you're in a hurry I do not recommend it. In any case, I recommend that you count at least a day for the color.
On the internet I saw by methods that were even longer, but with better results: to cover the frame with the method of paper mache (strips of paper dipped in a mixture of water and glue, dried and then painted), or with materials such as polymer clay.
A method that is quick, but less beautiful to look at, is to cover the horns directly with tape of the desired color. There are interesting options as the opaque green gardening or the shiny black insulation ones. It could be the right solution for a last minute costume.

After the first coat of color, for a better effect it is best to add some details. I covered the antlers with brownish paint and then I rinsed them, so that the color remained only in the folds. It is not the more realistic effect of the world, but I think it improves the result greatly. Of course I could do it because the paint for walls that I used as a base is washable, if you put under the tap a water-based paint, you will just ruin it (on the other hand when I touch the antlers too much my paint comes off in scales, it wasn't a great choice).

I had some problems making the structure with which to wear them. I first tried to secure them with an elastic band, but the horns were too heavy and fell down, so I solved the issue by linking tightly the wire ends to a hairband also made of wire.

Secured to a rigid structure, the antlers remain in position, and to mask the headband I only have to comb my hair in an appropriate way.

As it is a custom, then, infinite details can be added to enrich the result. I chose one of my beloved wreaths, obviously one suited for autumn.
Will you dress up on Halloween? If you will, what will be your costume?

An even better solution for quick and easy antlers, in my opinion, is to make them using two branches or twigs jointed with tape, wire or other. It gives the effect of a mythological creature even more connected to nature and is very fast and simple. The only downside, at least for me, is the availability of materials: during my daily life in Milan, my chances of finding decent-sized (and in good sanitary conditions) branches are almost zero.
