I finally managed to read "Il cuore selvatico del ginepro" ("The wild heart of the juniper"), Vanessa Roggeri debut book published in August 2013 by Garzanti.
It's set in Sardinia , land of origin of the author, between 800 and 900 and is strictly tied to this land: customs and beliefs, but also the area itself, are thoroughly described.
The focus of the story are the popular beliefs concerning cogas, evil women who practice black magic, witches. These are told through the story of Zara family consisting of a married couple, the old father of the husband and five daughters, in which borns a girl who seems to carry all the signs that identify a coga.
I found really fascinating the narration of the events regarding the alleged coga and the superstitions of the people who deal with her, because until the end her "evil spells" are narrated from the point of view of the people who suffer them, so the reader is not quite able to figure out whether it is real magic or superstition.
Instead I found still immature the management of the characters and the writing. The characters are well-rendered it in their emotions, but they don't have a real evolution. " Good " and "evil" you can be identified till the beginning and remain so until the end.
The writing defects are more annoying: the point of view floats seamlessly from one character to another, with a constantly changing level of immersion. The narrator is omniscient at some times and sometimes she isn't. In addition various moments relevant to the plot, are told in a few dry lines, but in my opinion it would be better for the narration to expand them (perhaps at the expense of some landscape description).
As for now it was published only in italian, but if you can read it and f you like family stories and folklore, or if you are interested in Italian traditions about witches, I recommend it , as even if it won't enter among my favorite books is a pleasant and engaging reading.
