Driven by curiosity, after reading the books (which I reviewed in this post), I wanted to see the film taken from the saga of Percy Jackson. Here I review the first, "Percy Jackson and the Olympians - The Lightning Thief" filmed in 2010.
In the film Percy is 16 years old, while the original saga began whhen he has 12. The story runs much faster than in the book and is extremely simplified, to the point that the plot is much less coherent and that some characters, including fundamental ones were completely eliminated. For example, the intrigue at the center of the film sees almost completely different antagonists.
Some scenes were distorted in a way that made them become absurd, like the flag game where Percy is completely surrounded and in inferiority and the opposing team just looks at him gaining superpowers and stealing the flag, while they could have stopped him a thousand times.
The personality of some of the characters is different too. The most noticeable are the changes in the best friends of the protagonist: Annabeth, is physically very different from its paper counterpart and her fighting skills are much higher and Grover is decidedly less nerdy and more interested in girls (in the book at some point he has a girlfriend but no one has figured out how he managed to succeed). It is also remarkable the different relationship between divine parents and children: the gods are much more emotionally present, but as a rule they can not interact with their offspring, so those poor demigods hear voices in their head.
In a film like thisa weak plot could be compensated for by fabulous special effects, but even those were not that great.
And the thing that I regret most is that the humor that permeated novels get completely lost.
In short, with a careful suspension of disbelief, it can also be a nice film if you do not have anything better to do, or it could be a good movie to watch in the background doing something else, but those who read the book will undoubtedly be disappointed. The important thing is to avoid expecting a solid and compelling story.
