Day 5: Alcazaba & Granada

We decide not to leave without visiting at least one of the attractions of Almeria, so we dedicate the morning to the Alcazaba. And we are lucky, because it's one of the things we like the most of our trip! We are also lucky enough to see it in privileged conditions: free, as European citizens, and almost alone, because we went there very soon.

Alcazaba is a term that derives from the Arabic and means "fortified walls". The construction of Almeria's was started at the beginning of the year one thousand. The first thing that strikes us is the fairy tale appearance, with crenellated walls, heavenly gardens, breathtaking views, pergolas filled with bunches of grapes and cats, cats everywhere.
The second thing is its size. The part we are visiting is immense, then we look out from the walls and discover that it is connected trough a fortified way to a hill iwhere there is another similar structure.

Almeria reached its maximum development in the Middle Ages as the largest port city in the Arab domanin. The Alcazaba is composed of three parts, two originals Arab ones and one Christian, added at the end of 1400 after the conquest of the city.
Inside the building, near to the area dedicated to the still in progress archaeological excavations, there is a small museum which depicts the everyday life at the time of the Arabs. It is very suggestive, but what we like the most are the children games, in particular the statuettes in the shape of animals that were given them on the occasion of religious festivals.
The Christian part fits quite well with the previous complex, though the structure was adapted to the modern needs of war, as evidenced by the cannons tower, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view, and by stone balls scattered in the inner courtyard.
We also visit the art museum housed in one of the towers, but is home to just a few not particularly exciting photos.

It's late and we are forced to leave the Alcazaba, return to the hotel and then leave for Granada.
Along the way we see a series of strange white tarps. The guide and then our host in Granada explain us that they are greenhouses where fruits and vegetables are grown intensively throughout the year and twere work mainly black immigrants.
Once in Granada, the navigator takes us deeper into the city, in streets so narrow that the car is likely to get stuck. Terrified we decide to stop on a wider street to control the destination. Nothing to do, it is just inside the complicate narrow streets.
Luckily we ask a police car for help and the very kind police officer convinces woman in charge to open up the gate of the district where we have to go and escort us to the hotel. We don't know what we would have done without him!

We park the car without any problems and we head to the number indicated, dodging a guy who wants to sell us ganja. There is no indication, no one answers the door and no one seems to know anything about it. At the hotel next door, however, we get the confirm that it is the right place. We are terrified that this is an illegally rented apartment as in Barcelona, where we had a very bad experience. We call the telephone number found on the reservation and finally the owner, soaking wet, opens the door. Evidently he had not heard because he was in the shower.
Unfortunately we are early and the occupants of our room have not yet freed it, but the owner gives us a discount and allows us to leave our bags and to use the kitchen to prepare lunch.
Our hostel is a rented apartment again, we don't know whether legally or not, but compared to Barcelona's it is another story. It is on two floors with a pleasant shabby ethnic decor, it is very clean, the kitchen is nice and spacious, the owner is friendly and very helpful. The only common thing: the smell of ganja. We discover in Granada there is a large community of hippies and we suspect that  the kindness and tranquility of the inhabitants may be caused by an excessive use of marijuana.
While we eat, we hear traditional music, with lots of rhythm given by clapping, coming from outside.

After lunch we head towards the cathedral through the Alcaìceria market. It's a narrow street full of shops reminiscent of a bazaar. The goods winks the eye to the hippie community, there are many things that I like, but no price tag and I don't dare to ask. Continuing we also see many stalls and shops selling spices, infusions and various kinds of tea, as well as shops selling typical local pottery, painted in  brilliant thick strokes.

The Renaissance cathedral, built at the beginning of 1500 by the famous architect Diego de Siloe, from the outside looks nothing like that, but inside is really impressive. We feel crushed by the size of the building. On the lines of the Renaissance were added baroque ornaments, especially regard the chapels and the wo beautiful twin organs.
What I liked most, however, were the enormous missals with the sacred music and songs of the time.
Next to the cathedral, with a separate entry and payment, there is the chapel of the Catholic Kings, where  are the tombs of Isabella and Ferdinand, of Juana la Loca and Philip the Handsome. It was recommended to me for the paintings from the collection of Isabella, including a Botticelli. Although there are several valuable works, I do not like the Botticelli, which is also of uncertain author. I appreciate the complicated grating, the missals, jewelry and a pair of paintings by Van der Weyden, but in retrospect I would not have visited it.
I admit that-stupidly, since it is the purpose of the chapel- the glorification of people who, in addition to unify Spain and finance the expedition of Columbus, have actively persecuted Moors and Spanish Jews, with forced conversions and the expulsion of the latter from the country, bothers me.

The shop of the cathedral is very funny: they sell the perfume of the cathedral and, together with those for nativity scenes, scary statues of hooded  man.

Vediamo l'università e qualche altro edificio interessante.
E' buonissima.

Leaving the chapel, we walk around the area. Granada takes itself very seriously as the city of pomegranates, that appear on road signs, tiles, etc... and even on street poles.
We see the university and some other interesting building. There are orange trees from which the local pick the fruits. Tired, we decide to go home...and we got miserably lost.
We spend the next few hours wandering in the narrow streets of our neighborhood, uphill and downhill, until, after we asked directions again and again, we find Plaza San Nicolas, the most famous scenic spot in the city which is very close to our hotel.
We are exhausted, luckily our room is finally free. We carry our luggage up the stairs and prepare the first and last pasta we will eat in Spain. It's very good.

It is in a magnificent location, in the most typical neighborhood of the city, the Albayzin, former Moorish quarter of narrow streets and white houses, and close to the most famous scenic spot of the city, Plaza San Nicolas. From the house during the day you can often feel melodies.
The area is very touristy, but also frequented by local artists, especially hippies and gypsies. The atmosphere is very relaxed.
Casa de Amigos is located in a typical white house where the owner rents rooms. It has a free parking near. It 'decorated in a very pleasant shabby ethnic style. The common areas and the rooms are quite spacious. There is only one shower for three rooms, but it is clean and I never found queques. Unfortunately, the door doesn't close. The kitchen is large and clean and there is a whole wardrobe of spices available to visitors. The double room has a private bathroom.
There isn't an elevator and there is a flight of stairs.
Once you check in you will receive a set of keys for the main door and your room and you can come and go at any time.
The owner is friendly and extremely helpful.
Tobacco smoking is not permitted in the house, but marijuana is allowed. They do not accept children and ask to pay in cash. We spent less than 25€ per night for a double room with bathroom and we had a great time, it was the accommodation that we preferred throughout the trip.

Bottone perso: un'idea/Lost button: an idea

How many times you happen to lose a button of a piece of clothing you love? When it comes to pants you can just replace it with a suitable one, but when it comes to a coat or a shirt or another piece of clothing with a series of the same buttons, things get more pesky.
It happened to me with the Massimo Dutti blouse that I bought in Barcelona: arrived in Milan, I realized that it was missing a button.

My solution was to pull off the button closest to the neck, sew it in place of the lost one and replace the missing button with a faceted crystal. In this way it looks something done on purpose, the blouse becomes more interesting and the jewel-button adds a light point near the face.

Day 4: Almeria

We woke up early because a long journey expects us. In the illegally rented apartment where we stay, the water, which the night before was gone, hasn't returned yet. We wash ourselves the better we can with wipes, eat breakfast, retrieve our luggage and try to get out. The lock of the door is half broken and does not work despite several attempts. All guests sleep, but we are seriously thinking of knocking on the room doors to find the owner, when the lock finally opens.
I wait in the lobby of the building with the luggage, while the Hairy half goes to get the car in the garage where we had left it the night before. But the garage's guy is not there. So he is forced to "stole" his car following thr customers the keys for entering and going out.
We leave Barcelona for Almeria with a sense of relief. The estimated travel time is very long, 7:30h and it stretches further with the lunch break. Meanwhile, we begin to see through the car windows sparkling hills which are perhaps foothills of the Sierra Nevada (perhaps they are the "silver and golden, the mountains of Spain" the Doors singed about in "Spanish Caravan"). Close to the city we notice one of the giant bull shaped posters by Osborne, a buisness specialized in mineral water and spirits (thanks to Bebe and Acalia who explained it to me).

Between the check into the hotel, the search for a car park and a an absolutely necessary brush up, it turned almost 17. Bad news, we don't have time to visit the fortified cathedral, one of the main attractions of the city. So we decide to go to the other, the Alcazaba, that is open until 20:30. The Hairy Half searchs it with google maps and see that it is near the sea, so we stay a bit longer on to put on swimming suits, with the idea of bathing in the sea before or after the visit.
We head towards the point indicated by the map, between neighborhoods that, moving away from the main street on which our hotel is, become increasingly degraded (later we will be told that Almeria, though it is a very beautiful city, is poor and overlooked by tourists).

We reach the seafront, at a point from which we can see a sort of bridge stretched over the water, the famous Cable Ingles, an abandoned industrial holdover from which the local kids dive giving us creeps (and yet when I was young I did these things...). In the distance we can see a lighthouse on a promontory and, at the opposite end of the walk, something that could be the Alcazaba.
It's the start a long walk on the boardwalk under the scorching sun. We were told that there were more beautiful beaches than this, but it seems pretty good to us. It's composed of fine sand and even if it is all public is pretty clean, has showers, toilets, playground and there is also a section for people with disabilities of various kinds.
Along the road we see a beautiful sand castle that reminds us a bit of Carcassonne.

After quite a bit that we are walk, the goal doesn't seem any closer. I ask the Hairy Half to show me the map and I want to strangle him: google maps shows as goal "Alcazaba street" and NOT the Alcazaba!
Now it's too late to get in the right place, not to mention that we're dead tired. So we decide to let go and take a good bath before the sun sets. The water is chilly, but we are happy to have a moment to relax and our aching feet finally breathe.
When we go out, is blowing a gale that dries us in a few minutes as if it were a huge hairdryer.

We take the way back. The sun is setting, creating beautiful colurs and lights.
We give a look at the menus of the restaurants on the waterfront, but, since no one exposes the prices, we do not trust them and decide to dine at home.

Siamo proprio in Andalusia.

Walking on the path we came from, we come across a bakery with in the window some rolls that look delicious. We go in and we buy one (I also buy a Spanish fashion magazine) stuffed with ham and cheese, really yummy. While we eat we walk another bit and come across various buildings with clear arab influences. We're definitely in Andalusia.

Rientriamo.

We go back to the hotel. Given that it does not have a kitchen, but it was said on the site that there was an area with tea and coffee where we hoped to find hot water, we brought cup noodles for this night. But the area turns out to be a vending machine -.- We are thus forced to prepare the noodles with hot water from the tap. Luckily the result is ok, indeed, we are so hungry that they seem very good.
We take a long and well-deserved shower and collapse exhausted.

Hostal Maribel

The hotel is not bad and a double room with bathroom costed us only 35€ per night. The rooms and bathroom are clean and quite spacious. There is air conditioning, a hair dryer, a tv, a telephone, a radiator a bottle of liquid soap and we were provided with towels. The staff is friendly and the hotel has an agreement with a near garage (but we found a free parking space without too much difficulty).
Pets are allowed and there is a laudry service.
It is located on one of the main streets of the city within walking distance from the main attractions.
Cons: there is no elevator, the Hairy Half saw a cockroach and from a door I saw a courtyard with hanging clothes and stuff of various kinds. Despite this I promote the hotel, we werw happy of our stay.

Fire Rainbows

Cortesia di D&M. Vietato l'utilizzo/Kindly offered by D&M. To use this image is forbidden

I found an article that I finally explained a strange phenomenon I witnessed in Mexico: a strange halo behind the clouds on which passed all the colors of the rainbow. Above you can see the picture taken by the couple who was with us, which unfortunately does not convey how awesome it was (I forgot the camera at the hotel and regretted it very much).
They are called fire rainbows and form when the sun passes through clouds in which ice crystals are formed, the cirrus clouds. The sun must be high at the minimum 58 degrees on the horizon (the optimum angle is 67) to hit the ice crystals so that the light will break in the colors of the rainbow.
If you are too far north or too far south or in the wrong season of the year you won't have the right clouds or the sun's rays won't reach the sufficient degree, so they are rather difficult to see.
Have you ever seen one?

Cosa fare in caso di rimozione forzata dell'auto a Barcellona/What to do if your car is towed away in Barcelona

You were in Barcelona by car and it was towed away . Panic! What to do?
First, if it has not happened yet, be very careful.
In Barcelona it is difficult to find free parking spaces and rather than parking the car illegally it's better to leave it in a pay parking or a garage (often garages have daily rates lower than those of publicpaid parking) because the car removal service is efficient and very quick. A couple of hours or even just a few minutes, and the car disappears.
And if the car was already towed? In the place where it was parked you should find a bright colored triangle sticker with a phone number you can call to find out the deposit were it was taken. Operators are available in English, French, Spanish and Catalan.
And if you don't find the triangle sticker ? Don't worry, you can still find out where your car is by calling 901 51 31 51 (which costs 0,088 euros for the connection and 0;068 euros per minute), sending a text message containing the word "grua" followed by a space and the towed vehicle license number at 217010 (it costs 0.15€) or better for free, going to the website www.gruabcn.cat, also available for mobile phone and entering the vehicle registration number in the space provided (link here).
In Barcelona there are five deposits, of which three for normal use, which are located one below theJoan Miró square, another in Passeig Garcia Faria, near the Ronda Litoral ring road and the third, which is called Sant Genis-Vall d'Hebron, on the ring road Ronda de Dalt.
Once you know where your car was taken, you have to go to the deposit with an identity document and the documents that attest the property or the right to use the car (here's the list of required documents) and pay the fine. You can pay by cash or credit card. I paid 177€ withdrawing the car on the same day, but I read about more expensive fines, depending on the infraction and the time when it is left in storage. In addition, if the fine is not paid within a certain time increases considerably.

Disegninviaggio (travel drawings): Carcassonne

Given my good intentions about keeping a drawn travel diary, someone maybe is wandering what happened to it. I actually kept regularly a diary with drawings, tickets of the monuments we visited and keeping our accounts (very useful, I was able to save money!). But many of the drawing have been made with markers in a hurry, sometimes even ont the car (you can see it by the trembling lines), with pages left blank for more beautiful ones to do with acrylic or watercolor that I never did because I got a lot of stuff to do when I returned.
If you agree, however, I decided to post the best ones right away and then write more posts later as I update the diary. I also decided to skip the scans of the pages that contain only the tickets of the monuments, but if anyone cares I'll publish those too.
Meanwhile, today I leave you the pages dedicated to Carcassonne: the history of the city with little drawings, an extremely simple little map (but it worked!), the fantastic dinner and our shadows cast on the walls of the castle.

Orsetti e aromi/Teddy bears and herbs

To use a couple of items that I never wore because they were too much autumnish (the t-shirt printed by me me and the tweed trousers), I tried this combination.

Cappello/Hat: mercato di Papiniano/Papiniano open air market, Milan (2€)
Cardigan: mercato di Brick lane, Londra/Brick lane open air market, London (2,50 £)
Pantaloni/Trousers: usati, mercato di via Eustachi/used, Eustachi street open air market (1€)
Scarpe/Shoes: negozietto in Liguria/shop in Liguria (12€)

I used for the first time the teddy bear leggings I made... with an Xl sweatshirt and woolen socks to stay at home. I hope to show you them soon in more exciting combinations.
Ah, the thing you can't see well in the photo is an old pendulum given to us by my grandmother that I want to hang in the living room when we'll have repainted it.

I also wanted to tell you happily that we started our balcony vegetable garden with three vases of herbs: basil, sage and rosemary. Unfortunately we have already killed almost all of them (in this old photo they already don't look good) except the rosemary, which I decided to call Hercules.

Day 3: Barcelona

We wake up refreshed from the long night's sleep and we go out with the idea of going to visit the Sagrada Familia. The Hairy Half hass the idea of controlling the car, so we go to see and...it isn't there anymore! Panic!!! Then we realize that there even the nearby cars are no longer there and that what had seemed a free parking space, with white lines, it is actually one of the lanes of the road! We have a suspect. We go to see and at the corner, hidden by a tree, there is a sign that says " forbidden to park on weekdays from 7 am to... ". It is Monday, 9 o'clock, and they have already removed the car. Very efficient.
We go back at the "hotel" , where at least there is free wi-fi and try desperately to search for information on how to retrieve the car and the extent of the fine. All the sites say that the Spanish traffic corps leave a triangle decal in the location where the car has been removed, showing the number of the deposit where it has been taken, but we didn't see anything and we start to worry about not being able to find it. Fortunately, on a website in English we find that  just insert the plate number in a particular area of the site of the road corps. So we discover where's the car and , after a quick search on google maps even where the deposit.
I I copy the map because obviously we left the navigator in the  car and google maps outside the hotel does not work, then begins our long march .
We meet almost immediately a street market. My toxic shopping addicted expert eye ogles fabric for 2€ per meter, but given the situation I find more appropriate to keep going.
We arrive in the square where there is a ridiculously phallic skyscraper that we already noticed ì, which googling after some time I found to be the Agbar Tower, the third tallest building in the city. It seems that along its surface there is a scary quantity of LED that can compose drawings with light and that it has automatic devices to adjust the opening and closing of shutters limiting the energy expense.
But at the moment we just chuckle at the shape and walk straight for a few miles along the Avingunda Diagonal. We only stop at a supermarket to stock up on bread and milk and we end up purchasing some delicious Spanish food to cheer up.
We arrive exhausted to the deposit. It is near the sea, but the area is concreted and rather ugly. Fortunately, the fine is slightly less expensive than we were afraid of, though certainly not cheap (177€) and no one stole the navigator.
As we're close to one of the two Barcelona  shops of Primark, my favorite low cost chain store, the Hairy Half wants to take me there (make him saint now!), but it is impossible to find a parking place.
It is the beginning of another nightmare, the research of a parking space. In the end we leave the car in a garage at 525 of Carrer de Provence that has daily prices lower than those of public pay parking (15€).
Exhausted, as we are near it, we go to the "hotel" to make us a salad.

Since in the morning we could not see it, the first half of the afternoon is dedicated to the must-see Sagrada Familia, the basilica which is Gaudi's masterpiece, so complicated that it has been started in 1882 and the planned conclusion of the work is at the earliest for 2032.
Outside there is a long line and this time they don't distrubute parasols as Casa Batllo, but we are "lucky":  not only the line goes fast, but, according to a clerk, in the morning the lines of visitors are so long to turn around all the building.
Admission is pricey, but worth it. This church was the thing that I liked the most during the previous trip to Barcelona and with the second visit I can only reinforce this opinion. We are delighted by the sculptures on the facade, the forest of pillars of the nave, the light trough the beautiful stained glass windows, but also in front of ingenious details such as the fonts in the shape of shells.
We also bought a ticket to get on one of the towers and when the time comes we head to the elevator, where, again, there's a long line. Once at the top we decide to walk down through the long spiral staircase that brings down to the church. It's an exciting descent, with views of the landscape trough bridges, balconies and loopholes that make us dizzy.
Once on the ground, for completeness we do a tour of the museum of the Basilica in the basement. It is not exciting compared to the church itself, but there are a couple of interesting rarities, such as the first project of Gaudí's, completely different from today's.
Our visit lasted three hours. It is not so late as we feared, so we decide to go to the Gothic Quarter as quickly as possible with the subway, which is clean, fast and efficient.

Ci dirigiamo subito alla cattedrale gotica, dedicata a Sant'Eulalia. In quest'orario l'accesso è gratuito.

We head straight to the Gothic cathedral, dedicated to Saint Eulalia. At this hour access is free. The interior is very nice, but what strikes us most is the geese enclosure in the yard and the beautiful tombstones (ok, ok, I have macabre tastes) on which you can see symbols and emblems associated with the life of the buried.

Through the narrow streets of the medieval city, overflowing with tourist shops, we head to another basilica worthy of note, Santa Maria del Mar, that has the reputation to have been one to which sailors went to pray before going on the sea.
The church is very beautiful but we begin to be tired. We stop on a bench and ate sandwiches stuffed with the chorizo (salami with paprika) bought in the morning, then we take the subway to go to the "hotel".

Along the way back we run into a thrift store that is doing the super discounts and I can't resist, I jump in and for a total of 10€ I buy a white t-shirt, a blouse by Massimo Dutti (without a button), a coordinate of lightweight Indian fabric shirt and skirt (which I discovered that fades and a has a hole, sigh!) and a crazy smock-like dress with a pattern of hearts, teddy bears and houses that I already see in a mori or cult party coordinate.
It seems an excellent end to a day that started badly, right? No, when we get to the apartment we open the taps to wash ourselves and nothing comes out. The owner tells us that the water is completely gone, that he called the plumber but he wouldn't arrive until morning -.-' Luckily I brought wet wipes, but this situation is really unpleasant, especially in a apartment with two bathrooms and an unknown number of occupants.

Il mese delle zucche/Pumpkin month

Buon Ottobre a tutti!

Happy October to everyone! It 's my favorite month of autumn, the month when the leaves begin to turn red, but it is not yet too cold, the month of many interesting events such as Halloween! :D
To celebrate I decided to made a pumpkin hair clip-brooch using a pumpkin decoration found at the  parish flea market, a mini doily found in the new flat and pom poms thread.
This year I would like to try to do the Halloweek, a week dedicated to halloween with themed outfits and so on, but we will see later!
I almost forgot: with the arrival of October my survey ended! The struggle between few long posts and a more short ones ends almost with a tie: 16 votes against 17. Which means that I will continue to do what I want. However I think I won't write less than 2 posts per day (if the work doesn't get off to a good start...).
Instead, regard the subjects of my post, the absolute preferred is creativity & tutorials. Here, unfortunately, I can not promise anything because I have to have time to do that :( But I have a lot of projects! With long detachment the seconds with the same number of votes are Japanese fashion (thankfully, since I opened the blog to talk about that!) and the reviews of books, movies, etc.. good, sometimes I wonder if it's worth writing them, but since you like them it is! I've a lot more to write ^^

Then come travels, which, although they did not take a lot of votes, I know that you like and just after my outfits on which honestly I did not count because they often do not get a lot of comments (but in fact there isn't much to say...). Without votes stand Japanese magazines, of which maybe I will start to make a more careful selection and "less pictures and more meat" post, and food. You can not leave the food without votes, heretics, and in fact I will continue to write about it. Thanks again for voting!
