Stranger Things

"Stranger Things" is a U.S.A. television series created by the brothers Matt and Ross Duffer and transmitted by Netflix in 2016.
At the moment the series is composed of a single season of 8 episodes, with a lenght between 47 and 51 minutes. In 2017 will be released a second series.
This is the plot: in 1983 in a secret laboratory near Hawkins, a small town in Indiana, an horrible creature attacks a scientist. Taking advantage of the incident, a young shaved girl escapes from the structure.
The same evening, the twelve year old Will Byers mysteriously disappears. His family, his friends and the sheriff of the city begin to look for him, but in doing so they run into a series of clues about something scary...
The setting and atmosphere are a clear homage to the science fiction films of the eighties (E. T. and its relatives). As in these famous predecessors, the real stars of the series are the children and the adolescents. The only adults to play an important role are Will's mother and the sheriff. The genre is a mix of science fiction and thriller with horror moments, however, played more on suspense and fear that on splatter side, so that even I, who hate horrors, was able to watch it (though there are a couple of pretty disgusting moments). The special effects, made with a mix of animatronics and CGI, in my opinion are really good.
The characters, even minor ones, are interesting and very well characterized, starting from their appearance, that is quite unconventional for a tv series (there are various quite ugly characters, not everyone is skinny, the little girl has a shaved head...). Just when they seem to fall into a stereotype, they manage to shock behaving unpredictably, yet consistent with their personality. I found this characterization one of the best aspects of the show.
The other is undoubtedly the plot, which manages to keep the viewer glued to the screen without messing up with logic.
The episodes are not self contained, indeed, they all end with a twist... including the final one, although in fact the story comes to a conclusion. It's kind of an eight hours film.
"Stranger Things" already become a mediatic success, with lots of memes and cosplayers. I really loved it too and I can not wait for the second season.

Ciao Patty!
