Girona: day 2

Il secondo giorno ho passato la mattinata da sola perché mio padre era al convegno.

Mi sono subito diretta alla città vecchia e ho fatto una passeggiata sul cammino archeologico, lungo le vecchie mura romane, prima che facesse troppo caldo.

On the second day I spent the morning alone because my father was at the convection.

I went to the old town where I took a walk on the archaeological path, along the old Roman walls, before it got too hot.

Ho deviato per il museo archeologico che è situato all'interno del complesso romanico di Sant Pere de Galligants, costituito da una chiesa a tre navate, un chiostro e un monastero. Nella chiesa si trova qualche pezzo romano poco significativo, è più interessante la struttura stessa. Nel transetto si trova il rosone originale smontato ed è impressionante vedere la sua grandezza.

Il chiostro romanico, come quello della cattedrale, ha dei capitelli interessantissimi con scene di vario tipo.

Il museo archeologico vero e proprio mi è sembrato avere un tipo di esposizione pensata per i bambini e non tutti i cartellini erano bilingui. Comunque c'erano dei reperti interessanti e delle ricostruzioni utili a capire meglio gli attrezzi delle epoche in questione, che vanno dalla preistoria all'età romana.

I deviated towards the archaeological museum which is located within the Romanesque complex of Sant Pere de Galligants, consisting of a three-nave church, a cloister and a monastery. In the church there are a few insignificant Roman pieces, the structure itself is more interesting. In the transept is there is the dismantled original rose window and is was impressive to see its size.

The Romanesque cloister, like the one of the cathedral, has some interesting capitals with scenes of various types.

The archaeological museum itself seemed to have a type of exhibition aimed at children and not all the badges were bilingual. However there were some interesting exhibits and reconstructions useful to better understand the tools of the ages in question, ranging from prehistoric to Roman times.

Visto che era gratuita, sono andata un po'a caso a vedere la mostra temporanea di Enric Marqués, pittore, scrittore, giornalista e attivista antifranchista vissuto dal 1931 al 1994 nella zona di Girona.

Non è il mio artista preferito, ma l'ho trovato senz'altro interessante.

Era molto bella anche la casa in cui era ospitata la mostra, Casa Pastor, un edificio del XVII secolo vicino alla cattedrale, costruito sui muri romani e sulle fortificazioni medievali e posseduto per la maggior parte del XIX secolo dalla famiglia aristocratica Pastor.

Since it was free, I randomly went to the temporary exhibition of Enric Marqués, painter, writer, journalist and activist against Franco, who lived in the area of ​​Girona from 1931 to 1994.

He's not my favorite artist, but I found his work interesting.

The house in which was housed the exhibition, Casa Pastor, a century building next to the cathedral, built on Roman walls and the medieval fortifications and owned for most of the nineteenth century by the aristocratic family Pastor, was also really nice.

Dopodiché mi sono trasferita nell'edificio di fronte, il palazzo episcopale, in cui è situato il museo d'arte, che ospita opere che vanno dal periodo romanico fino all'arte contemporanea. Del palazzo antico rimane poco di visitabile, giusto la prigione. Invece le opere d'arte mi sono piaciute tantissimo, soprattutto quelle medievali, in particolare la statua originale della Lleona e i codici miniati, e le raffigurazioni moderne della città.

C'erano anche delle ricostruzioni molto interessanti dei materiali usati dagli artisti nell'antichità.

L'unica cosa che non mi è piaciuta del museo sono stati i sei piani di scale, ma d'altronde Girona è una città che si sviluppa in altezza e tutti i musei oltre alle esposizioni includono anche un po' di ginnastica.

Then I moved to the opposite building, the bishop's palace, where is located the art museum, which houses works from the Romanesque period to contemporary art. Of the old building remains little to visit, just the prison. Instead, I liked a lot the artworks, especially the medieval ones, in particular the original statue of the Lleona and the illuminated manuscripts, and the modern representations of the city.

There were also very interesting reconstructions of the materials used by the artists in old times.

The only thing I did not like of the museumwere the six flights of stairs, but Girona is a city that grew upwards and all the museums in addition to the exhibits include a little gym.

A pranzo sono andata in centro a mangiare una paella con mio padre e i suoi colleghi. Purtroppo non vado matta per la paella, che è stata ordinata dall'alto e sono stata molto triste di scoprire che il ristorante serviva anche il mio adorato arroz negro, il riso al nero di seppia.

At lunch I went to eat paella with my father and his colleagues. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of paella, which was ordered by the organizer and I was sad to discover that the restaurant also served my beloved arroz negro, rice with squid ink.

Dopo pranzo siamo stati al ponte costruito da Eiffel, molto bello, in ferro dipinto di rosso. L'architetto l'aveva progettato per casa sua, ma la città spagnola lo ha comprato per sostituire un vecchio ponte precedente.

After lunch we went the bridge built by Eiffel, very nice, in iron painted red. The architect designed it for his house, but the Spanish city bought it to replace an old bridge.

Poi siamo andati nel quartiere del vecchio ghetto a visitare il museo di storia ebraica. Mi ha molto deluso perché c'erano pochi reperti e tanti cartelloni che mi hanno fatto pensare che avrei potuto anche leggermi un libro invece di andare al museo. Ripensandoci a posteriori, però, i reperti mostrati erano già tanti, considerando che gli ebrei sono stati espulsi dalla spagna nel 1492. Al museo erano conservate lapidi, i resti della bottega di un macellaio e di un bagno rituale più pochi manufatti minori e qualche riproduzione di oggetti artistici di grande importanza.

Then we went in the district of the old ghetto to visit the museum of Jewish history. I was very disappointed because there were few artifacts and many boards that made me think that I could read me a book instead of going to the museum. Looking back in retrospect, however, the artifacts shown were a lot, considering that the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. At the museum there were preserved tombstones, the remains of a butcher's shop and a ritual bath, plus a few more minor artifacts and some copies of artistic objects of great importance.

Dopodiché abbiamo iniziato a girare per la città e ci siamo imbattuti nella chiesa di Sant Martì, che a quell'ora era già chiusa.

Then we began to wander in the city and stumbled in the church of Sant Martí, which at that time was already closed.

Siamo andati a vedere anche l'università, che si trova all'interno dell'antico monastero di Sant Domenec, fondato nel 1253. L'aula magna è nella chiesa sconsacrata, che è uno degli esempi migliori di gotico catalano.

We also went to see the university, which is housed in the monastery of Sant Domenec, founded in 1253. The main hall is the former church, which is one of the best examples of Catalan Gothic.

Dopodiché siamo saliti sulle mura romane all'altezza dei Jardins d'Alemanys e le abbiamo percorse verso occidente fino al lato opposto della città. Vale davvero fare questa passeggiata, avendo giusto l'accortezza di evitare le ore in cui il sole è più forte, perché il panorama sulla città vecchia è splendido. Si può anche salire sulle torri per una vista ancora migliore.

Then, at the Jardins d'Alemanys, we went up on the Roman walls and we walked westward to the other side of town. It is really worth to do this walk, being only careful to avoid the hours in which the sun is strongest, because the view of the old town is wonderful. You can also climb the towers for an even better panorama.

Una volta scesa, per rinfrancarmi della faticaccia mi sono fermata al bar La Gioconda, in Plaça Catalunya a prendere una horchata (una bevanda costituita da acqua, zucchero e radici di Cyperus Esculentus, risalente alla conquista araba) super biologica.

Once we descended, to refresh after the long walk, I stopped at the cafeteria La Gioconda, in Plaça Catalunya, to drink a super organic horchata (a drink made up of water, sugar and roots of Cyperus esculentus, which dates back to the Arab conquest).

Appena oltre abbiamo visto il famoso Pont de Pedra. Da lì abbiamo proseguito dritti per la Rambla de Llibertat, la via principale della città, dove abbiamo ammirato i negozi e i locali sotto i portici e fatto un po'di shopping.

Nearby we saw the famous Pont de Pedra. From there we went straight to the Rambla de Llibertat, the main street, where we admired the shops and restaurants and did some shopping.

Proseguendo siamo arrivati in Carrer d'Argenteria, che si chiamava così per via delle botteghe orafe. Lì abbiamo visto il pupazzo dedicato a El Tarlà, un personaggio leggendario che si dice che durante un'epidemia di peste ne avesse intrattenuto gli abitanti chiusi in quarantena nella via, tramite acrobazie su di un'asse posta fra due palazzi.

Continuing, we arrived in Carrer d'Argenteria, named so because in the old times there were goldsmith shops. There we saw the puppet dedicated to El Tarla, a legendary character who, during an epidemic plague, entertained the inhabitants, closed in quarantine in the street, performing acrobatics on a plank placed between two buildings.

Siamo passati in albergo a farci una doccia e poi, portati da un collega di mio padre che da qualche mese vive a Girona, siamo andati a fare una cena leggera a base di tapas da Zanpanzar, in Carrer de Cort-Reial, 10. Sia la birra sia le tapas erano buone, ma non ottime né economicissime. Però mi sono tolta lo sfizio di mangiare le mie adorate patatas bravas, patate saltate servite con una salsa piccantina.

Dopo cena abbiamo fatto un bellissimo giro nella città vecchia di notte, fra i monumenti illuminati.

We went to the hotel to take a shower and then, led by a colleague of my father living in Girona from some months, we went for tapas at Zanpanzar, in Carrer de-Cort Reial, 10. Both beer and the tapas were good, but not excellent or particularly cheap. But Imanaged to eat my beloved patatas bravas, fried potatoes served with a slightly hot sauce.

After dinner we had a very nice walk in the old city at night, between the illuminated monuments.
