Il cerchio/The circle (Strandberg, Elfgren)

"Il cerchio" è il primo libro di una trilogia svedese che rientra sia nel genere young adults sia nell'urban fantasy.

Una sera in cui non avevo sonno ho pensato di leggerne un paio di pagine, ma l'ho trovato così appassionante che non riuscivo a smettere e l'ho finito tutto ^^'

Tutto comincia quando un misterioso potere prende il controllo di Elias, uno studente della prima liceo, e lo costringe a suicidarsi. Loro malgrado si ritrovano coinvolte nella vicenda sei ragazze molto diverse: Minoo, una "secchiona" di famiglia ricca che non riesce ad interagire con i suoi coetanei, Rebecka, che si è fidanzata da poco e ha disturbi alimentari, Vanessa, una ragazza popolare e vistosa che esce con uno spacciatore in barba al patrigno poliziotto, Anna-Karin, una ragazza di fattoria grassottella che sempre stata vittima di bullismo, Ida, una dei bulli e Linnea, giappo-goth con situazione familiare molto disagiata.

Il romanzo è narrato attraverso il punto di vista di quattro di loro più quello di Elias, nell'inquietantissima scena iniziale. Una delle cose migliori è che spesso il loro modo di vedere le cose si rivela inaffidabile, rivelando al lettore solo una realtà distorta. Fa davvero pensare a come ognuno di noi non abbia accesso alla Realtà, ma solo ad una versione estremamente soggettiva di essa.

A seguito del suicidio di Elias gli eventi prendono una piega sempre più strana e sinistra man mano che il sovrannaturale penetra nelle vite delle protagoniste.

La suspance, la violenza e la lotta contro il tempo nell'individuazione del colpevole del suicidio di Elias fanno rientrare questo libro di diritto anche nel genere giallo-thriller. Si resta davvero con il fiato in sospeso fino all'ultimo, tantopiù che in questo romanzo anche i protagonisti possono morire. Anzi, tutto il libro è pervaso da una certa crudezza: il sovrannaturale non è fatto da fatine e incantesimi, ma è una forza difficile da controllare e molto pericolosa, le ragazze si drogano, fanno sesso, hanno disturbi alimentari, problemi di bullismo...forse ogni tanto ricadono nella macchietta, ma in generale ho trovato le protagoniste credibili e con caratteri dettagliati e approfonditi.

One evening I wasn't sleepy I thought I'd read a couple of pages, but I found it so exciting that I couldn't stop and I finished it all ^ ^ '

It all begins when a mysterious power takes control of Elias, a student of the first year of high school, and forces him to commit suicide. Six really different girls find themselves involved despite what they want: Minoo, a "swot" from a wealthy family who is unable to interact with her peers, Rebecka, who  recently found a boyfriend and has eating disorders, Vanessa, a popular 

and showy 

girl who goes out with a drug dealer in defiance of her police officer stepfather, Anna-Karin, a plump farm girl who was always bullied, Ida, one of the bullies and Linnea, a Japanese-goth with a really difficult family situation.

The novel is told through the point of view of four of them plus the one of Elias, in the frightening opening scene. One of the best things is that the way they see things often proves to be unreliable, revealing to the reader only a distorted reality. This really made me think about how each of us hasn't access to Reality, but only to a very subjective version of it.

Following the suicide of Elias, events take a more and more strange and scary turn as the supernatural enters into the lives of the protagonists.

The suspense, violence and the fight against time in identifying the perpetrator of the suicide of Elias  make this book suited even to be called a thriller. It makes you hold your breath till the end, the more so that in this novel the main characters may die. In fact, the whole book is pervaded by a certain rawness: supernatural is not made by fairies and spells, but is a difficult to control and very dangerous force, the girls take drugs, do sex, have eating disorders, problems of bullying... perhaps sometimes they fall into caricature, but in general I found the protagonists credible, detailed and deep.
