Mary e il fiore della strega/Mary and the Witch's Flower

"Mary and the Witch's Flower" (メ ア リ と 魔女 の 花) is the first film by Studio Ponoc, a Japanese animation studio founded in 2015 by several former Studio Ghibli animators led by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura. The film is based on the 1971 novel "The Little Broom" by the British writer Mary Stewart.
The protagonist is Mary, a ten-year-old girl who is spending the end of the summer holidays by her great-aunt Charlotte, in a modern, but not contemporary, English countryside (there is a television, but it is old-fashioned, while there aren't mobile phones). Mary is bored until she finds a strange flower that opens up for her a magical world, with the help of a little broom and a black cat. Obviously, something goes wrong...
The influence of Studio Ghibli in this film is very strong, both for the type of story and for the drawings and animation style. There is also the classic clash between the evil technology, in this case the transformation spell, and the good nature, in this case the magic of the flower. Yet I felt some differences. First of all there is a complete story with a beginning, a fairly clear plot and an end, while most of the Ghibli films are not very linear (I still would like to read the book, though). The plot is nice and flows well (except for a deus ex machina in the form of a rodent with a Swiss hat).
Even in the drawing you feel some differences (I loved the character design of the protagonist, while the hair and clothes of her friend Peter are terrible).
Ultimately I found "Mary and the Witch's Flower" not as memorable as the greatest Ghibli masterpieces, but still very very  nice.
I'm curious to see if with the next films Studio Ponoc will take further distanc from Studio Ghibli and find a more defined identity. I will certainly carefully follow the next releases.
