The Key (Strandberg, Elfgren)

"Nyckeln" (The Key) is the third book in a Swedish urban fantasy trilogy for teenagers, written by Sara B. Elfgren and Mats Strandberg and published from 2011 to 2013.
I was so impressed by the first, "The Circle" (which I reviewed here), that, since no italian publisher seemed determined to publish "The fire", the second, I decided to read it in English (I reviewed it here). It was so involved that immediately after finishing it  I ordered the third in English and, although it was quite long (853 pages), I finished it in a few days.
The previous novel finished with a really important twist. In the third the chosen ones are even less, and the enemy more dangerous. And not only the Apocalypse is coming, but the Council that governs the magical powers in the world is an increasingly strong and disturbing presence. Plus, the chosen ones start to suspect even of those they believed to be their allies and to question their loyalty, so they split at the worst time.
This book is a worthy conclusion of the saga, in a excalation of danger, betrayal and twists that you can not stop reading.
I will not repeat how I like of this series the unreliable narrators, the characters, the violence, especially psychological, the realism of certain situations and the thriller structure in which the protagonists must solve a dangerous situation in a very short time.
Too bad that the real final is followed by a much less adrenalinic conclusion, which by contrast seems sluggish. It's true that it allows to close some situations, and to give hints of the possible future of the world of Engelfors, but it is also true that it adds nothing that the reader could not guess in advance, and that in any case, some questions remain unanswered anyway, so it would not be so dramatic to leave the rest to the imagination of the reader.
Despite this, I loved the trilogy Elfgren and Strandberg and it ranks in the top ten of the urban fantasy for teenagers that I read in recent years. I recommend it strongl (and not only to teenagers), with all the necessary precautions against readers who can be too young or too sensitive and may have problems with sex, alcohol, drugs and violence scenes, or with issues such as eating disorders or self-injury.
