On November the 1th, the Hairy Half and I went to visit the castle of Malpaga, near Bergamo. The regular tours are held on Sundays and holidays, except during the months of December, January and February (full ticket 7€, 3€ for children from 6 to 12 years, free under 6 years), and any day of the week for groups of 25 people or more by appointment (more information at: http://www.castellomalpaga.it/).
For the Halloween weekend were organized costume re-enactments, so it was the perfect time to visit it. If we were really clever we could have visited Bergamo that day too, but we did not think of it.

Malpaga derives from the Latin malus pagus, that is bad, humble and unpleasant village. This is because the area was not only very wet and not particularly suitable for agriculture, but it was a point of passage for German soldiers. The first castle, protected by a wide moat, was built in the mid 1300 by a Ghibelline, before the introduction of the use of gunpowder in European wars.

In the mid-1400s, having been abandoned, was sold for cheap to Bartolomeo Colleoni, recently appointed captain general of the militia of the Republic of Venice, who chose it for its strategic location to protect the Venetian Republic by the troops from the Duke of Milan.
Colleoni had to do major work on the castle, both because of the introduction of gunpowder, which forced him to strengthen it, and to make it into a home worthy of his rank. During this period, in fact, the space between the two old circles of walls was closed and adapted to house a series of luxury rooms, with fireplaces and covered in frescoes.
The frescoes in today castle are the original ones from 1300, the additions made by Colleoni a century later, and by his grandson in 1500. The picture shows the boardroom where the guests were received. The frescoes depict the reception by the famous leader of King Christian of Denmark, that shows his wealth and rank.

In this photo you can see the private rooms used primarily by the wife and daughters of Colleoni. The frescoes were made by French painters as if they were tapestries on the wall, as painted hooks can be seen at the top and fringe at the bottom. Also note that the characters are represented with clothing fashionable in France at the time.
To make the tours more vivid, in many rooms there are also modern reconstructions of furniture of the time, a thing I found a very nice.

In this photo (in addition to the costumed guide) you can see the bedroom of Colleoni, where there are frescoes depicting religious and courtly virtues, a Madonna of humility and a reconstruction of the bed that was there at the time. The mount was used to prevent the moisture and the step is made of chests where to store clothes. Even if the leader was a big man, the bed is short because in the Middle Ages people slept with the upper body elevated for a lighter sleep, for superstitious reasons (only the dead were fully lyed down) and probably also to facilitate breathing in an era of lung diseases.

In this picture, the bathroom: in the same water the first to wash themselves were the men of the castle, then the women and finally the children (and maybe the infant mortality rate of the time had something to do with it).

The view from the first floor, with the gutters in the shape of a dragon.

The space dedicated to the devotion, next to the courtyard. On the arch you can see the coat of arms of the Colleoni family: three balls (hence the family name), two in white on red and one red on white.

Il cortile con i suoi affreschi.

The courtyard, with its frescoes.

We, as I said, were lucky enough to visit the castle on a day in which the Jirga delle lame nere group showed historically faithful instruments of torture and weapons and their use. Although they do reconstructions from the twelfth to the thirteenth century, they were really good and I found their explanations exciting, especially that about swords.
