Day 11 & 13: Elche, Alicante & comeback

We leave Seville and in slightly less than a 7 hour drive we arrive at Elche, a city visited by very few tourists, mainly famous for its palm grove, which dates back to ancient times. I absolutely wanted to go there after seeing the pictures on the internet in which it seemed a magical and tropical place.
Elche is also famous for the discovery of prehistoric times finds, particularly the magnificent statue called Dama de Elche, which unfortunately now is in the Archaeological Museum of Madrid, and that you see reproduced in palm leaf in the first picture.
In fact the city is not that great and the palm grove is much less wild than I hoped. First we go in the museum of the palm grove. Nice and informative, but not exciting, anyway it allows us to understand the palm grove, still organized according to the ingenious system imported by the Arabs.
Unfortunately the stores that sell dates are all closed, as I love them. We just do a quick tour of the palm trees, but then we leave for Alicante, hoping to bathe in the sea.

Entering the city we see on the hill the castle of Santa Barbara. The city does not look particularly pretty, but I eye various interesting shops and the sea sparkles on the horizon.
But there's the age-old problem of parking. The Hairy Half manages to leave me at the hostel with all the luggage, but when he manages to reach me (after leaving the car in a garage, sigh), it is already late.
We go out for a walk, but after being in the first shop, where I buy a beautiful casket and sparkly yarn, and going to the supermarket, everything is already closing.
Since it is the last night of vacation we plan to eat out and we ask for advice at the hotel, but they don't know any restaurant and, indeed, look at us like we aree crazy. When we go out again we find out why: after the shop closeds and the bathers left, the city transforms and becomes a scary place populated by ugly mugs. We also see the first transsexual of the holiday: as a fan of Almodovar I would have been disappointed not see a single one :P
The open pubs and restourant seem ugly and we do not find more than we can't find anymore the one we spotted hoping to eat the paella with squid ink. We decide to go back and have a depressing dinner with instant noodles.

The next day is the one of the great return. We are very worried, but the 13 hours of driving pass fast, because while the Hairy Half guide, I read out loud the beautiful Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett (review soon).

For lunch I brought a set of hummus and croutons and wonderful dates bought the day before at the supermarket: a delicious Arab style meal.
Speaking of food, we have a hearty laugh at a motorway in France, where the coffee maker also offers vegetable or tomato soup (I hope not from the same nozzle).
Instead of returning immediately to Milan we stop a couple of days in Liguria, in my grandmother's house. We are able to bathe in the sea and eat the local food, but I do not enjoy the return as I would like: when just got back I discovered that my parents arranged for me a job interview in a very short time, in fact, I risk to have to go back to Milan immediately without even an ironed blouse, but fortunately there is a drawback and is postponed. I'm really back...

Pension Portugal

Mixture of hostel and hotel, with kitchen (not so clean, but working), shared bathrooms and dormitories, as well as rooms with bathroom (our choice). The second largest room of the trip, luckily this time accompanied by a pretty good bathroom. In addition in our room there was a tiny balcony. Blue towels that make us suspect an imperfect bleaching, but they have the decency not to show it. Soap dispenser, shampoo and even non-slip mat in the tub.
Wi-fi access, 24 hour reception, friendly staff, elevator (which I appreciated), television, air conditioning, access for the handicapped.
Close enough to the beach and in an area full of shops and supermarkets.
All this for a very low price.
I do not know whether to recommend the dormitories because the common areasdidn't look so clean, but the rooms are worth it.

Noi da Alicante non siamo passati. Al Ritorno siamo passati dall'entroterra, nella Mancia, dove siamo passati a vedere i famosi mulini a vento di Don Chisciotte ^^
Dormire abbiamo dormito in un paesino sperdutissimo XD
