Mosaico Mediorientale (Patrizia Fabbri)

"Mosaico Mediorientale" (Middle-Eastern Mosaic) is a 2016 book, written by the Milan based journalist Patrizia Fabbri and published by Alter Ego Edizioni. The narration consists by the intertwined stories of six families, set in Palestine/Israel, Italy and U.S.A., from 1917 to 2011. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the characters and is introduced by the name of the narrator and the date. The style is a cross between a diary and a school essay: the narration is very intimate and personal, but the language is simple and everything is explained so that the reader understands it.
The change of each decade is always marked by a brief introduction explaining the historical and political context.
At the beginning of the book there is a list of the characters, really useful considering that there are so many and that their relationships become gradually more complicated.
At the end of the book instead there is a very detailed vocabulary that reveals the author's considerable expertise.
Although the style didn't please me at 100%, the book involved me a lot and I read it all in one breath. As well as engaging I found it very informative, without being pedantic.
What I liked most of the novel is that all the characters are profoundly human and that the author does not judge, a difficult task when building a narrative around a politically hot topic like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
If you are interested in the topic I absolutely recommend it.
