The Magician King (Lev Grossman)

"The Magician King" is a 2011 novel by the American writer Lev Grossman. It's the second of a trilogy, which first book is "The Magicians", published in 2009 (which I reviewed here) and the last "The Magician's Land", published in 2014.
In 2015 as "The Magicians" it was also made into a TV series of the same name which I reviewed here.
The protagonist of this second book is still Quentin Coldwater, but in parallel to his story is told what happened to her best friend Julia during the events of the first book from her point of view.
The second book, while remaining much more unkind than the usual fantasy aimed towards teenagers, doesn't give such a feeling of existential emptiness as the first, probably because the characters are engaged in various missions and so they have a purpose. There is also, finally, an evolution in Quentin's character.

"The Magician King," as the first book, is extremely compelling and well written. In addition, a thing extremely rare for the second volume of a trilogy, it is self-contained. I'm looking forward to reading the third, both for the story and in order to have an overview of the saga.
