Autumn wishlist

Ormai il divieto di shopping che mi sono autoimposta per il mese successivo al viaggio in Giappone, in cui ho comprato di tutto e speso tantissimo, è finito. Non ho intenzione di impazzire e comprare tonnellate di roba, ma penso che farmi qualche concessione su questo punto mi aiuterà ad essere più rigida su altro (come la maledettissima dieta).
Avendo un budget molto ridotto, ho deciso di fare una wishlist mirata alle cose che mi servono di più o che desidero particolarmente.

- Zaino capiente e impermeabile. Durante l'ultima gita mi si è rotto lo zaino. Adesso me ne rimangono due, il vecchio Invicta che usavo per la scuola e uno ricevuto in omaggio che si è rivelato robustissimo (anche se si è rotta la cerniera della tasca anteriore). Mi basterebbero, non fosse che sono entrambi blu, un colore che non metto quasi mai, e quindi fanno a pugni con la maggior parte dei miei vestiti. Me ne piacerebbe uno marrone, magari di pelle o ecopelle, che secondo me è molto elegante. Ma spesso gli zaini di pelle non sono strutturati bene per quanto riguarda l'insieme di bretelle e appoggio sulla schiena, per cui mi accontenterei di uno zaino di tela impermeabile. Anche sul colore sono flessibile, se non lo trovo marrone andrebbe bene anche verde militare o anche bordeaux, o magari bicolore.
- Cardigan color zafferano. E' nella mia wishlist dal marzo 2014, ma, anche se il color zafferano è stato abbastanza di moda nel frattempo, non sono mai riuscita a trovarne uno che rispondesse a tutti i miei requisiti: costo abbordabile, media pesantezza, possibilmente non sintetico.
- Maglione bordeaux. Ho decisamente troppi maglioni, ma mi piacerebbe possederne uno bordeaux per vivacizzare il mio guardaroba invernale, perché mi sono accorta che ne ho quasi solo di colori spenti.
- Quaderni di Tiger. Sto finendo l'ultimo quaderno con le pagine bianche di Tiger che mi è rimasto e vorrei fare scorta. Ovviamente so già che andando lì finirò per comprare un sacco di cose inutili...


By now the self-imposed shopping ban for the month following the trip to Japan, where I bought too much things and spent a lot, is over. I'm not going to go crazy and buy tons of stuff, but I think some treats on this point will help me to be more rigid on the other things (as the damn diet).
Having a very low budget, I decided to make a wishlist targeted on the things I need or I want more.

- Large waterproof backpack. During the last trip my backpack broke. Now I'm left with two, the old Invicta I used for school and one I got as a freebie which proved to be very sturdy (though the front pocket's zipper broke). They would be enough for me, if only they weren't both blue, a color that I hardly ever wear, and therefore at odds with most of my clothes. I'd like a brown one, perhaps leather or imitation leather, which I think is very elegant. But often leather backpacks are not well structured in the braces and back part, so I can also settle for a waterproof canvas backpack. Even regarding the color I'm flexible, if I don't find brown army green or burgundy, or even two-tone would be fine.
- Mustard cardigan. It is in my wishlist since March 2014, but, even if mustard was quite fashionable in the meantime, I could never find one that met all my requirements: affordable cost, medium warmt, best if not synthetic.
- Burgundy sweater. I have far too many sweaters, but I would love to own a burgundy one to liven up my winter wardrobe, because I realized that I have almost only dull colors.
- Tiger notebooks. I'm finishing the last Tiger's blank pages notebook I had and I would like to stock up. Obviously I know that going there I'll end up buying a lot of unnecessary things...

Shadowhunters: Le Origini/The Infernal Devices

Qualche tempo fa vi avevo parlato della prima trilogia degli Shadowhunters, di Cassandra Clare. Si tratta di una serie urban fantasy romantica con protagonisti dei teenager, che si svolge a New York ai giorni nostri. Quando l'ho letta sono rimasta perplessa sulla scrittura e sull'originalità della trama, ma mio malgrado sono rimasta affascinata dai personaggi e mi ci sono appassionata, leggendo di un fiato anche la seconda serie, che è il seguito della prima. Al di là di ogni razionalità l'insieme dei sei libri mi è piaciuto moltissimo, così, appena ho potuto mettere le mani sulla trilogia "Shadowhunters: Le Origini" non mi sono lasciata sfuggire l'occasione.

Le premesse dell'ambientazione sono le stesse: tutte le leggende sono vere e demoni, licantropi, vampiri, fate e molte altre creature fantastiche si nascondono fra di noi. Per difendere i comuni esseri umani esistono delle persone speciali, gli Shadowhunters, che grazie al loro addestramento, a rune magiche e al loro sangue parzialmente angelico, riescono a vedere e combattere queste creature.

Il titolo italiano "Le origini" è fuorviante: non si parla delle origini degli Shadowhunters e non si tratta di un vero e proprio prequel alle altre due trilogie, è una storia a parte, anche se si ricollega ad un avvenimento dell'ultimo libro e averle lette aiuta a capire l'epilogo e permette di godere alcuni particolari della storia (peraltro i personaggi di questa serie sono antenati di alcuni delle altre trilogie).

La vicenda è ambientata a fine 1800, in una Londra piena di fumo in cui piove sempre. La protagonista è Tessa Grey, una sedicenne di New York che si trasferisce nella capitale inglese dopo la morte della zia, per raggiungere suo fratello Nate, l'unica famiglia che le è rimasta. Ma all'arrivo, invece di Nate, trova due inquietanti signore che dicono di essere state mandate a prenderla. La strada di Tessa si incrocerà con quella degli shadowhunters, in particolare di Will e Jem, migliori amici diversissimi fra loro, ma entrambi estremamente affascinanti, e con quella di un esercito di robot assassini.

Si sente che questi tre libri , "L'angelo", "Il principe" e "La principessa", sono stati scritti dopo le altre due trilogie, perché la scrittura è decisamente migliore (decente invece che brutta). Il triangolo amoroso non è particolarmente originale, ma funziona, come funziona il resto della trama. I personaggi, come era già successo per la prima trilogia, sono profondamente umani, coerenti e interessanti, anche se ho trovato che a Jessamine mancasse un certo nonsoché e che Will fosse eccessivo nel suo insieme di perfezione e angst (di sicuro la continua descrizione della sua bellezza è un po'esasperante). Secondo me il punto forte di "Shadowhunters: Le Origini" è l'ambientazione che, pur rimanendo coerente con le premesse complessive della saga, ha molti elementi steampunk. Si sente anche la cura nella ricerca sulla Londra e sui costumi dell'epoca.

Si tratta di una serie urban fantasy romantica dedicata ai teenager, non certo una lettura altamente intellettuale, ma, a differenza della prima trilogia, non ho particolari remore a consigliarla se vi piacciono il genere e l'ambientazione. C'è di meglio, ma l'ho trovata molto carina.

Some time ago I wrote about the first trilogy of the Shadowhunters series, by Cassandra Clare. It is a romantic urban fantasy series with teens protagonists, which takes place in the present New York. When I read it I wasn't convinced about the writing and the originality of the plot, but in spite of myself I was fascinated by the characters and I become so involved that I read the second series, which is the follow up of the first, in a really short time. Beyond all rationality I loved the six books, so, as soon as I could get my hands on "Shadowhunters: The Infernal Devices" I seized the opportunity.

The premises of the setting are the same: all the legends are true and demons, werewolves, vampires, fairies and many other fantastic creatures live among us. To defend the common human beings exist special people, the Shadowhunters, who can see and fight these creature, thanks to their training, their magic runes and their partly angelic blood.

This trilogy is not a prequel to the other two, is a separate story, even if it relates to an event of the last book and reading them helps to understand the epilogue and allows to enjoy some details of the story (by the way the characters of this series are the ancestors of some characters of the other trilogies).

The story is set in late 1800, in a London full of smoke where it always rains. The protagonist is Tessa Grey, a sixteen year old from New York who moved to the British capital after the death of her aunt, to join her brother Nate, the only family she has left. But on her arrival, instead of Nate she finds two disturbing ladies who say they were sent to pick her up. Tessa will come across the Shadowhunters, especially Will and Jem, best friends who are very different, but both extremely fascinating, and an army of killer robots.

It's easy to guess that these three books, "Clockwork Angel", "Clockwork Prince" and "Clockwork Princess", were written after the other two trilogies, because the writing is much better (decent rather than bad). The love triangle is not particularly original, but it works, as the rest of the plot. The characters, as happened for the first trilogy, are deeply human, coherent and interesting, although I found that Jessamine missed a certain something and Will was excessive in his perfection and angst (surely the continued description of hiss beauty are a bit irritating). I think the strong point of "The Infernal Devices" is the setting that, while remaining consistent with the overall premises of Shadowhunters, has many steampunk elements. The careful research about the London and the costumes of the time is also evident.

It is a romantic urban fantasy series dedicated to teenagers, not a highly intellectual reading, but, unlike the first trilogy, I haven't particular qualms recommending it if you like the genre and setting. It isn't the best of its kind, but I found it very nice.

Ho una grande novità! A fine Ottobre in edicola uscirà "Julienne: mi piace cucinare", una nuova rivista di cucina illustrata. E indovinate di chi sono le illustrazioni? Ebbene sì, le ho fatte io!
Sono veramente emozionata per quest'esperienza che unisce le due cose che amo di più, il cibo e il disegno!
Il primo numero sarà in edicola a fine mese con un sacco di belle ricette autunnali e costerà 1€. Mi raccomando, non perdetevelo!

In realtà, ancor più delle feste in maschera, mi piacciono le feste in maschera a tema! Come temi per Halloween secondo me sono perfetti Harry Potter e Nightmare before Christmas (ma anche le fiabe hanno il loro lato oscuro...).

To tell the truth, even more than generic costume parties, I themed ones! In my opinion Harry Potter and Nightmare Before Christmas are great themes for Halloween parties (but fairy tales have their dark side too...).

Mi sono vestita così in un giorno in cui ero distrutta per l'allenamento in palestra e depressa per la pioggia e il lavoro. Insomma, un classico look sciattone alla "è già tanto se non esco in pigiama", ma nobilitato dal tocco punk e dai nuovi orecchini ispirati ad Alice in Woderland.

I wore this outfit on a day in which I was dead tired because I went to the gym and depressed because of the rain and work. In short, a classic lazy look of the kind "I already put a lot on effort avoiding to go out wearing my pajamas", but ennobled by a punk touch and by my new Alice in woderland inspired earrings.

Qualche tempo fa su Tokyofashion.com ho visto questi orecchini che mi sono piaciuti tantissimo perché mi ricordavano i teschi di zucchero messicani.

Some time ago on Tokyofashion.com I saw these earrings that I liked very much because they reminded me of Mexican sugar skulls.

Ho pensato che potesse essere l'idea giusta per riciclare le perle di questo bracciale che mi ha passato un'amica e non ho mai messo.

I thought it might be the right idea to recycle the beads of this bracelet that a friend handed down to me and I never wore.

Fra l'altro per coincidenza avevo delle perle molto simili anche per la parte inferiore e superiore, quindi sono riuscita ad ottenere un risultato finale davvero somigliante.
E giusto in tempo per Halloween!

Yankee kun to Megane chan - Il teppista e la quattrocchi/Flunk Punk Rumble

"Yankee-kun & Megane-chan - Il teppista e la quattrocchi" è un manga di Miki Yoshikawa serializzato dal 2006 al 2011 sul Weekly Shonen Magazine e raccolto in 23 volumi. Si tratta di una commedia scolastica demenziale.
Il protagonista è Daichi Shinagawa, un teppista che odia la scuola, ma viene perseguitato dalla rappresentante di classe, Hana Adachi, perché partecipi alle attività comuni della classe. Costretto a frequentare Hana suo malgrado, Daichi si rende conto che la ragazza è tutt'altro che la secchiona perfettina che pensava, anzi, ha pessimi voti, pochissimo buon senso, e un calcio mortale. Chi è davvero la sua compagna occhialuta?
Avevo già scritto a proposito di questo manga perché me ne ero innamorata per il suo umorismo demenziale. Arrivata alla fine dell'edizione italiana mi sento finalmente di dare un giudizio generale, e purtroppo non è positivo. La serie perde vitalità nella seconda parte, quando si concentra sulla scelta dell'università da parte dei protagonisti e sui conseguenti test d'ammissione. Rimane comunque abbastanza divertente e quindi si tiene duro in vista del gran finale prospettato quasi fin dall'inizio. Ma il finale è, mi si perdoni la citazione fantozziana, una cagata pazzesca. E se c'è una cosa che può rovinarmi un manga è un pessimo finale.
Non si salva nemmeno per il disegno, che è molto espressivo, ma è ancora immaturo (basta guardare gli occhiali).
Nonostante questo non ho cuore di sconsigliarlo del tutto, i primi numeri rimangono molto divertenti. Adesso ho iniziato a leggere un altra serie della stessa autrice, "Yamada-kun e le 7 streghe" che anche in questo caso è partito benissimo, spero in un finale più soddisfacente.

"Flunk Punk Rumble" (Yankee-kun & Megane-chan) is a manga by Miki Yoshikawa serialized from 2006 to 2011 in the Weekly Shonen Magazine and collected in 23 volumes. It is a wacky school comedy.
The protagonist is Daichi Shinagawa, a thug who hates school, but is harassed by the class representative, Hana Adachi, who wants him to participate in the common activities of the class. Forced to spend his time Hana despite himself, Daichi realizes that the girl is far from the prissy nerd he tought, in fact, she has very bad grades, very little common sense, and a deadly kick. Who his bespectacled classmate really is?
I already wrote about this manga because I was in love with its zany humor. As the italian edition just ended I finally feel I can give a general opinion, and unfortunately it is not positive. The series loses vitality in the second parte, when it focuses on the university choice of the protagonists and the consequent admission test. It is still quite fun and so I endured for the grand finale envisioned almost from the beginning. But the ending is really grotty. And if there's one thing that can ruin a manga is a very bad ending.
It isn't saved even by the drawings, that are very expressive, but still immature (just look at the glasses).
Despite this I have not the heart to advise against it as a whole, the first issues are very funny. Now I started reading another series of the same author, "Yamada-kun and the 7 witches" which has a a great start too, I hope for a more satisfying end.
