The Shannara Chronicles

"The Shannara Chronicles" is a 2016 U.S.A. fantasy series  developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and based on the homonymous series of novels by Terry Brooks. The first, and so far only, season consists of 10 episodes of 42 minutes each.
It's set in a post-apocalyptic world, after the end of our civilization, in which there are several sentient races, including humans, elves, dwarves and orcs, and above all there is the magic. The plot of the first season broadly follows that of the second novel of the first trilogy "The Elfstones of Shannara". The protagonist is the young half-elf Wil Ohmsford, son of the hero of the first book. Wil lives a quiet life with his mother in a valley until her death pushes him to leave. Despite himself he will end up involved in a mission undertaken by the Druid Allanon and the elf princess Amberle to save the Ellcrys, a mysterious tree that prevents the invasion of the world by a demonic army.
I haven't read the book (so far I have only read the first of the trilogy, but after this series I'd like to read the other), so I'm not sure if the plot is faithful to the original, but I read that the show also incorporates elements of some later novels. The structure is that of a classic Tolkien-like epic fantasy, almost banal. At a level of storytelling what makes the show worth to be seen are the characters, which are well characterized, interesting, charismatic and very human, and their interactions.
But the thing I found most original and interesting was the setting, in a world claimed back by the nature, in which occasionally emerge the ruins of our civilization.
The visual sector seemed pretty well done, entrusted more to credibile craft effects than to a botched computer graphics common to many of the recent fantasy productions. The unique personal demerit: the Druid Allanon is really too yahoo, I couldn't even look at him.
I liked them a lot the musics too, and in particular I found very apt (between trash and epic) the choice of a Western song in a hero's ride scene.
In conclusion it is a series that will appeal to classic fantasy lovers, but which might also appeal to people who simply want to see a good action series with a romantic subplot. However, compared to the most famous fantasy series of recent years, "Game of Thrones," "The Chronicles Shannara" has a lower percentage of violence, and especially sex, so it is suitable for a younger audience.
