"The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making" is one of the cutest books I've read lately. The author is Catherynne M. Valente, a writer, poet, critic and blogger winner of numerous awards, who often uses fairy tales, folklore and myths in her work in a feminist and surreal interpretation.
This novel follows the story of September, a 12 year old girl who one day is brought to Fairyland, a magical world inhabited by fairies and other magical creatures and where she lived many adventures. The structure is that of a fairy tale, told by an ironic and distant narrator similar to the ones of some Victorian fiction, a thing that makes the story perfectly enjoyable even by adults.
The descriptions are wonderful, settings, objects and characters are so beautiful that make me want to draw. In fact, the text is illustrated by Ana Juan, in a very pleasant, though not fully satisfactory way.
Even the follow up, where September is 13 years old is very nice and I hope there will be more books in the series. There is also a prequel, but I have not read it.
