For my birthday I received the two books that I missed in the series of Brambly Hedge Jill Barklem (here's my review of the first two). With these I have all the four seasons that make the series and I can give an overall opinion.
These two books have done nothing but confirm my previous impression.
They tell daily episodes, which for some reason become memorable, of the life of a community of humanized mice, living in harmony with nature with a low level of technology and clothes and houses reminiscent of the Victorian era.
There is no real conflict or evil, so they are definitely suitable for very young children, but also little instructive because they do not teach that the real world can be dangerous. According to me, despite everything, they can be more pleasing to a certain category of adults for the bucolic, relaxing and almost poetic atmosphere, far from the stress of everyday life. For the same reason, though, someone might find them tedious, although I think the stories are too short to really get boring.
But the real appeal of these books are, of course, the illustrations. Jill Barklem, as well as having studied with care the animals and plants that she represents, is a master in the use of watercolor and proves herself a great illustrator in every single page. She manages to create a believable, consistent and highly detailed world, full of poetry and life. Each page is a feast for the eyes and soul.
Of all the books, the one with the story story that I liked a little less was "Spring Story", because the protagonist was little a mouse that I found a bit annoying. Instead, the one I preferred was perhaps "Winter Story", the only one that doesn't have a specific protagonistr and the one that has the most fairy like tones. As for the illustration all books are absolutely worth it, but maybe the one I preferred was "Autumn Story" (it can be because autumn is my favorite season, or because it was the first I read).
