Mini Totoro (tutorial)

Here's an idea that my Japan enthusiast readers will appreciate, to make a mini, soft Totoro. Since Christmas is approaching stealthily as a reindeer covered in bells, I thought it as a Christmas decoration (think how nice a whole Studio Ghibli themed Christmas tree would be!), but it can also be used as a simple doll, as a keychain, pin and much more and it is a gift idea that may appeal to many. For example I've sewn mine for a friend who loves Totoro.

Difficulty: easy. Basic sewing or sewing machine utilization skills needed.
Materials: pile or felt, two round beads, sewing material

I have chosen as the subject the white small totoro because it is much simpler than its gray counterpart, which can be done too, but requires much more time and effort.
First you need to cut out the external shape in pile twice. I did this by folding the fabric in half so to have a bit less to sew. Given the form of the totoro, it's better to fold the fabric along the side of the "feet".

You will make the work easier by sewing the eyes before sewing the edges. I chose pile of a colder white than the body, so as to make the eyes stand out a minimum. At the center of the two circles of white pile I sewed a round black bead for the pupil. If you are in a hurry you can sew only it to fix the circles, leaving the whites of the eye separated from the body, but I think the result is worse.

At this point, you have to decide where you want to insert the ribbon to hang the totoro and sew the two parts along the edges (you can sew it from the outside, pile will cover the thread and imperfections) fixing the strap too. Leave a small hole unseen to stuff it (to help you fill the ears, you can use a pencil). As padding I used the leftovers of the pile in which I had cut it out. Finish sewing the outline and your mini totoro will be ready!
