Code & Exposure (Kathy Reichs)

"Code" and "Exposure" are the third and fourth book in the young adults Virals series, written by Kathy Reichs, who became famous for the series of detective stories starring the forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, and by her son Brendan. The protagonist of Virals is Victoria "Tory" Brennan, niece of Temperance, and her friends, that saving a puppy wolfdog used as a guinea pig in an experiment, contracted a virus which gave them incredible powers.
I already reviewed the first two books, "Virals" and "Seizure" here and here.
In "Code" the group find itself forced to participate in a game orchestrated by a madman, to avoid the death of those who are around them.
In "Exposure" the group voluntarily searchs for who appears to be another maniac to help disappeared schoolmates. Meanwhile Chance becomes a more and more threatening character.
As always, the action is breathtaking and Reichs gives the reader a series of false clues so that the final revelation is even more surprising. The fourth book ends with a stunning plot twist, which bodes well for the continuation of the saga.
The main action has a quick rhythm, but the private lives of the characters have evolve very slowly and sometimes it is frustrating. If in "Code" is almost ridiculous that Tory doesn't notice the boys in love with her, in the fourth book the characters' relationships finally undergo what appears to be a turning point.
In "Code" as in the previous novels there are two chapters from the perspective of the antagonist, which I found a bit annoying for the change of point of view. In "Exposure" emerges a further problem, that is a couple of chapters written from the perspective of another member of the Virals. This only partial point of view change in my opinion is a bit patchy. To make up for it, the four short stories that are part of the saga "Shift", "Swipe", "Shock" and "Spike", are written each chapter from the perspective of a different Virals member and work very well, I'd love if Reichs will go in that direction also in the novels .
Ultimately I became really involved with this saga and I can not wait to read the next volume. Meanwhile I hope to get my hands on all the novellas!
