In Real Life (Cory Doctorow, Jen Wang)

In realtà questi aspetti rimangono molto sullo sfondo.

"In Real Life" it is a 2014 comic book written by Cory Doctorow and drawn by Jen Wang.
The protagonist is Anda, a teenager girl who begins to play a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) in a guild made up of girls with female avatars, created to counter the devaluation of women as gamer. Anda meets new people, has fun and climbs the guilds hierarchy , but everything changes when she accepts a mission to destroy the goldfarmers, players who collect objects that are valuable in the game and resell them illegally for real money.
At first it seems the classic story in which the plump protagonist becomes a kind of Cinderella thanks to a beautiful virtual avatar and finds her path in real life thoo. More generally it may seem a story where girls team up to make an environment dominated by men recognize their value.
But these aspects remain in the background. The focus of this comic are injustices, human relationships in the network, and the ensuing cultural clashes.
Obviously a single volum can't talk about everything in depth, but I think there is a good balance between the said and the unsaid and despite some elements remain pending, the volume reaches a satisfactory conclusion.
I found the drawings really cute, with a soft stroke and a graphic of the type that recently is having a great success in the hipster milieu (it's vaguely reminiscent of "Lumberjanes").
Ultimately, if you are interested in the topics, I definitely recommend this title.

A me è piaciuto molto comunque, però va a gusti.
