Yesterday I told you the first part of my weekend in Piedmont, now let's move on to the juicier, the reason why I invited myself to the house of my friend who lives in Alba, that is the festival of the white truffle. From early September to mid-November, every year in Alba are held many events that revolve around local products, in particular the white truffle (but there's also the black one), Barolo wine and Castelmagno cheese. There are all sorts of events, ranging from cultural ones, such as guided tours of the historical wonders of the city, and a medieval festival.
According to our friend, we went there the most important weekend,  the one in which there were the most events related to truffles.
Being passionate about the genre, I appreciated very much that the food stands and the many games stalls where to win local products (which included every kind of game of skill or luck, including a "race" of wooden horses mounted so that they swelled up a balloon when people bounced on them) were medieval themed, run by people in costume and that the main square was covered with straw to give the atmosphere.
On Saturday we have a lot of fun wandering around aimlessly, while on Sunday there was so many people that in some places you could not move, so it was definitely more stressful.

There were also street performers and stalls selling crafts, but of course the ones that interested us the most were the food stalls. There were so many interesting foods that relied on local products and of course truffles, though on the streets were privileged blac ones that are cheaper than the white truffle, I suppose in order to offer more acceptable prices. We tried both the street stalls and a restaurantsso I can say with a minimum of knowledge of the facts that the the stalls are more convenient, for the prices (not very low, but still acceptable) and for the speed of service, because at that time the city is besieged by tourists and even if you book a restaurant, you are likely to wait for long losing precious time. Obviously, if you want to taste delicious dishes prepared with white truffles, the restaurant is a better solution, but you have to be prepared for very high prices and long waits. At an economic and timing level it may be better to buy a white truffle (the prices I saw start from 25€) and to prepare a special dinner at home because the dishes flavored with white truffles I've seen around in medium-end restaurants had prices between 17 and 30€. Of course, every once in awhile it's nice to also indulge in a luxury, but maybe at that point it is better to do it really well in a high-end restaurant.
As far as we were concerned, for dishes with truffles we chose the stalls. We tried the famous local raw meat seasoned with black truffle (6€), two little focaccia topped respectively with lard and castelmagno cheese (6€) and mulled wine (1.50€).

On Saturday we joined a tour of Alba for the next day. There were several options and we chose the "Alba underground" tour (10€), that included, with the guidance of an archaeologist, visit to the subterranean remains of the Roman and medieval city. Under churches, banks and houses, we saw Roman roads and sewers, Lombard tombs, medieval longhouses. It was really very interesting, it is an experience that I absolutely recommend.

The tour ended at the archaeological museum, which was included in the ticket price. Unfortunately, we saw it in a hurry because we had booked the restaurant and we were late, but I was very impressed by the remains of the whale of Alba, who swam in the waters that covered the area during the Tortonian (11 to 8 million years ago), and by the mastodon of Verduno, similar to a modern elephant, dating back to the Messinian (7 million to 5 million years ago), irreparably damaged by an illegal excavator and now restored as best as possible thanks to the tours'money.

With the tour we visited the cathedral vault and then we went back to see the inside. The original church dates back to 1100 and has been revised several times, until it assumed today's shape. I found very nice both the outside and the blue starry ceiling, but to tell the truth I have not found it really remarkable if not for the overlapping elements of different eras highlighted by the restoration. In fact, in the cathedral through grates in the ground and other devices are emphasized elements such as the old staircase, the baptismal font with roman tub (in the second photo) modified and then abandoned, and so on.

As I said, on Sunday we went to the restaurant Da Gio, recommended by our friend of Alba. We had reservations, but just as we sat down the waitress warned us in a rather rude way that, unless we ate pizza, waiting times were long. We decided to take the risk, but we kinda repented, because we waited an hour and a half losing half of the afternoon. Obviously, the situation was due to the truffle fair, so I can not give opinions on normal timings.
We took a not memorable handmade apple flavoured beer from Trentino, but for the rest we focused on local produces: a platter of cheese tasting to divide among us as a starter and a barolo wine risotto with castelmagno cheese cream. The cheeses were very good, but the risotto was spectacular. The only negative note is that according to our friend they had reduced portions, probably because of the fair.
I was afraid to have spent too much, instead I got away with about 18€. In general I do not know if to recommend it or not, but certainly the period of the fair is not the most suitable to go eating there.

To lift our mood before we left (it was clear that we would meet endless queues) we decided to get ice cream at the ice cream shop La Romana. I really liked the shabby chic environment and I was impressed by the value for money: for 2,50€ (which is now the standard price of ice cream) you could have a cone to choose between wafer and biscuit, with a bottom of white or black chocolate (both chocolate taps in the second photo), two flavors of ice cream and handmade whipped cream. The "Black Forest" ice cream flavor was fantastic, while the chestnut cream left me less satisfied and I would have preferred that the cream was not sweetened. In any case, I recommend it.
The staff was very friendly, but obviously the times and the service were affected by the crowd of the fair.

Obviously, given the gastronomic event, I bought some little gift for myself: a bottle of truffle flavoured extra virgin olive oil (12€) and two salami, one flavoured with Barolo and one with truffle (6€).

Hai fatto venire fame anche a me!
