Thanks to Clyo who linked me this interview, I learned a of a great initiative born right here, in Milan, in my favorite market, the one held in Papiniano street.
It is Recup, a project founded by the twenty-five years old Rebecca Zaccarini and currently run with the help of three other girls and of many volunteers. It wants to hack the problem of food waste in local markets, recovering unsold or damaged food.
In the fruit and vegetable markets, the waste disposal law force traders to throw the damaged or unsold food away at the end of the selling hours. But often it is still edible food. Numerous associations, thanks to the 155/2003 law, already recover unsold food from supermarkets or other exercises and Recup wants to do the same in the markets.
But not only: this project also wants to restore the dignity of the people who were previously forced to search for it among the garbage and to turn local markets back to being meeting places.
In fact, the food recovery and its sorting and redistribution is made by the same people who will benefit of it, to create a moment of collaboration, sharing and solidarity between people of different ethnicities and ages.
Recup doesn't only cover Papiniano street market, but also the bakers and bars in the area.
I'm excited about this wonderful initiative because many times at the end of the market I saw old people rummaging in the trash. It broke my heart, but I didn't know what to do. I hope that the project will soon spread to other markets and cities!

This is wonderful :) Only one or two chains of cafes do it here, which is a shame for such a big city with so many homeless :/
