"The City & the City" è un romanzo del 2009 dell'autore britannico China Mieville.

"The City & the City" is a 2009 novel by the British author China Mieville. Of the numerous awards he was nominated to for it, he won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the World Fantasy Award, the BSFA Award and the Kitschies Red Tentacle.
It's a classic noir detective story, of those with the policeman who is the first person narrator. What is not at classic all and it is worth reading this book is the setting: in fact, the story takes place in two cities that intersect thickly as if they were one, but have different language, economy and culture, and are divided by laws so strict that is punished even to look for too long to the other side, which can also mean another area of the same street or the same park. On these infringements oversees a virtually omnipotent secret police.
Obviously the crime being investigated Tyador Borlù, the inspector protagonist of the novel, has profoundly to do with the peculiar organization of the two cities.
Initially I found it a book difficult to follow, both because I read it in English, and in particular because of the difficulty of understanding of the setting (my compliments to the perversity of the author, which, moreover, mostly writes "new weird") which emerges page after page, and which is shown either through the eyes of the protagonist or through real explanations. It started to involve me more towards the middle, when the mysteries related intersecting the two cities begin to emerge more clearly.
Not all questions are answered, but this is perfectly consistent with the noir tone of the novel.
"The City & the City" is a very interesting, but sometimes irritating book. I recommend it to fans of thrillers who love noir and are not afraid of very complex stories.
