Shelter (Harlan Coben)

Shelter is the first book of a young adult series written by Harlan Coben, famous thriller author. The main character is Mickey Bolitar, grandson of Myron Bolitar, lawyer for an agency that represents sports stars, protagonist of the series for adults of the same author. The same expedient to connect a new young adult series to a successful adult one had already been used by Kathy Reichs with Virals.
In this first book, following the death of his father in a car accident and the hospitalization of the mother in a rehab clinic, Mickey has to move to a new city and a new high school. There he finds a girl he likes and who seems to reciprocate, Ashley, but at some point she stops coming to school and replying to his messages. Mickey decides to find her at all costs and in so doing he finds new friends, but gets caught up in something much bigger than him.
The protagonist is a Gary Stu through and through: he is an athlete, knows martial arts, is good, loyal, smart, liked by girls (although he is a bit clumsy with them) and so on. The secondary characters are definitely more interesting even though in the first book they aren't really deepened.
The plot is very engaging and the suspense remains high in a great crescendo.
The book is written in first person from the point of view of the protagonist. The writing (at lest in the italian translation is not anything special either for good or bad, although the style that attempts to be self-deprecating and youthful sometimes irritated me.
I found it very interesting for the fact that despite being a young adult it does not resort to the fantastic elements or female protagonists that are so fashionable in recent years.
