Northanger Abbey (Jane Austen)

"Northanger Abbey" is a novel by Jane Austen published posthumously in 1818 together with Persuasion, but finished 15 years earlier. Although it was the first novel written by the author, the style is that of the mature Austen thanks to the 1817 revision. It was adapted for stage and television, but it is one of the lesser known works of the author.
Yet it was the Austen novel that I found fuond the funniest. Indeed is a sentimental novel's parody in which is inserted also a parody of the Gothic novels fashion, which depopulated at the time. Being a parody of a genre, the story in itself is rather banal, but it is worth reading for the way in which it was told, starting from the memorable opening: "No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine. Her situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and disposition, were all equally against her".
The main characters are very interesting: the protagonist is not beautiful, not particularly bright nor educated and is a fanatic of gothic novels, the male lead, in contrast to its rigid counterpart of the "serious" Austen novels, has sense of humor and the foes (of which I won't reveal the identity) are well outlined. The other characters are a bit flat, but the history is not affected by it.
The author is much more present as the narrator that in all her other works, with pretty good results.
It 's a highly recommended book for a laugh, whether you are a fan of sentimental novel, Jane Austen and gothic novels or you hate them.
