Japan 4/9/15: Ochanomizu, Akihabara, Sugamo e Ikebukuro

Today's program is to go to Ochanomizu and then to Akihabara, but we decide to trade places between the destinations. It proves to be a bad idea, since all Akihabara's stores open around 11. So we decide to go to Ochanomizu (whose name means "water for tea") which is only a quarter of an hour on foot.
We find the Cathedral of the Resurrection, also known as Nikolai-do, in honor of its founder, St. Nicholas of Japan, an archbishop who worked to improve Russian-Japanese relations and raised funds in Russia for the construction of this church. It's very strange to see a building in the Byzantine architectural style typical of Eastern Europe churches in the middle of Tokyo. It can be visited for a fee, but since it opens at 13 (which is why we reversed the destinations of the morning), we have to skip it.
We search for the musical instruments area, a street famous for its music shops, but we can't absolutely find it. Maybe everything is still closed here too? After some time we give up. Bad day start.

Fortunately, we find easily our next destination, Yushima Seido, one of the largest Confucian temples in Japan, whose particularity is to be completely black. We can not see the treasure room because it is open only on weekends and public holidays, but in the garden of the temple we see the world's largest statue of Confucius, donated by the Lions Club of Taiwan in 1975.
The school connected with the temple was very famous and branches of it have become the world-famous University of Tokyo, and Tsukuba University and Ochanomizu University.

We have a bit more difficulty to find Kanda Myojin, but in the end we make it.
This temple is of particular interest because, in addition  to Daikokuten, the god of good harvest and marriage, and Ebisu, the god of fishermen and businessmen, it hosts a very particular third deity: Taira no Masakado, one of the samurai who rebelled against the Heian government, and who was later elevated to the rank of divinity. It is said that after his death in 940, his severed head was delivered to Shibaraki area, near the present sanctuary and the locals, who respected his rebellion, transferred it to Kanda temple. During the Meiji period, the emperor hesitated to include this temple in the Tokyo Ten shrines, because of the association of the sanctuary with Masakado, perceived as an anti-government figure. Finally he did only because of popular pressure, but removed Taira no Masakado from his role as kami. However, this samurai was so popular among common people, that he was symbolically returned to the sanctuary after Second World War.
The temple is beautiful, painted vermilion, and richly decorated with gold and lacquers.

After visiting the temple, we walk back to Akihabara. We come across several girls dressed as maids or in cosplay to attract customers and advertising various maid cafe.
We arrive almost by chance to Gachapon kaikan, the first floor of a building completely full of Gachapon machines. Actually, it's not as big as I hoped. Since these machines are everywhere in Japan, it is not worth going to Akihabara for it, I saw the same kind of Gachapon sold in many other places.

Instead we are really interested in the local Mandarake shop, that sells manga, video games, CDs of anime songs, various models, cosplay and more, all strictly used and thus with better prices.
It's a black palace with a large red sign, so it's very easy to find (but we got lost anyway). Inside the goods are divided by type into various floors that can be reached either by an external staircase and by an elevator. Unfortunately you can not touch anything except in the manga section, as the models, dolls and various toys are all locked in display cases. Although it is not a type of exibition that I really like I still managed to buy a beautiful Moomin bag for 800 ¥. I heard that the shop of Moomin Cafe was expensive, so seeing a low price I throw myself without thinking twice. Later I discover that Moomin merchandise is sold throughout the city and that with a bit of luck you can find it at acceptable prices.

Lunch is a time travel! We find the tiny restaurant specialized in don (ingredients served on a bowl of rice) of 6 years ago and we do not resist to eat there again. I even take the same dish, the ikura salmon don with salmon and salmon roe (920¥). The Hairy Half chooses the All Star, a mixture of squid, sea urchin eggs, salmon, tuna, salmon eggs and another fish, which, even if it costs a little more, allows you to try more flavors. It's the first time that he eats urchin eggs, which are considered very valuable, and he let's me taste them too. They aren't the best thing I ever ate, but it's a flavor that I could get to like.
Our dishes are very good and we are served two free miso soups to accompany them.

After lunch we go to Sugamo, a neighborhood known as "the old people's Harajuku" for its shopping streets targeted towards to an older clientele. The most famous product of the neighborhood is red underwear, which is said to bring good luck.

The real reason for the popularity of Sugamo is the Togenuki Jizo statue of Koganji Temple, in the middle of the shopping street, which is thought to have healing powers. People stand in a line to wash the statue with small towels then press them on the part of the suffering body in the hope of relief. We can't resist and we try it ourselves! We do not find a lot of queque, but from the barricades in front of the statue we deduce that at peak times there must be a lot of people.
I also take this opportunity to buy good health talismans for my grandmothers.

We actually chose to come to Sugamo today because on the 4th, 1th4 and 24th of each month, the temple houses a small festival. It is the only festival that we found during our holiday and want to try this experience. In fact, along shopping street, in addition to shops there are lots of stalls selling both street food and objects. We visit various shops and stalls (followed for two or three stores by an old policewoman who clearly classified us as suspicious), then we stop at a stall just outside the temple to buy takoyaki, balls of batter with pieces of octopus. They are different from the ones I was used to in Italy, they have a softer heart and have a spicy core, not bad at all!

Since it's still early, we rashly decide to go to Ikebukuro. Since it's Friday night there are lots of people around. We immediately find Sunshine City, the shopping street, and we stop at Tokyu Hands, a shop that sells stuff of all kinds (DIY, stationery, kitchen...). This branch has 8 floors. On the ground floor there must be some themed exhibition, because there are stalls selling mushrooms themed clothes and accessories. I fall in love with everything, but the prices are to high for me and I have to settle for a Gachapon.

Even inside Tokyu Hands prices are much higher than I expected. There are wonderful things, but some, especially the kitchen stuff, are very similar to what I saw in Seria for 100¥. I decide it's the right place to buy the fudepen (brush pen) I wanted and in the end the Hairy Half buys me them.
We continue to Otome Road, which is a street of shops anime, manga, DVD and so on, much like Akihabara but aimed to a female audience. Maybe because we are tired, the stores seem small and they don't impress us so much, so we visit them very quickly.
We are so exhausted and so lost in the crowd that we give up looking for the local branch of Wonder Rocket and go home.

My booty of the day! The Moomin bag of bought used at Akihabara's Mandarake (800¥), the fudepen from Tokyu Hands that the Hairy Half bought me, the mushrooms themed Gachapon that I bought at Tokyu Hands (200¥) and a keychain in the shape of an ikura gunkan bought in a100¥ store in Sugamo.
