Limitless

Limitless (serie televisiva).jpg

Here I am, definitely back to the wretched everyday life. To lift my mood today I'll review "Limitless", my favourite TV series of this summer.
It's an U.S.A. television series of 2015-16. It is the sequel of the 2011 film of the same name, based on the novel "The Dark Fields" by Alan Glynn. It consists of 22 episodes of 45 minutes each.
Although it was recommended to me by manypeople, and I saw and enjoyed the film, I was a bit biased about it, but after the first episode I was completely in love.
The series can be seen independently from the film as it takes place some time later, but mainly because the film's protagonist, Eddie Morra, becomes a secondary character.
The new protagonist is Brian Finch, a US twenty-eight guy who tries with little success to make a career as a musician, and who is considered a failure by almost all his acquaintances. Brian has to accept a temporary job as an archivist, during which he mets an old school friend, who, seeing him down, gives him a pill of NZT, a drug that allows people to use 100% of their brain for 12 hours. Brian uses the dose to help his sick father, but when he looks for his friend to ask him another pill and finds him dead, he becomes the main suspect of an FBI investigation. Meanwhile he begins to feel the side effects of the drug.
It an action series with a touch of science fiction and a tragicomic tone.
The screenplay is excellent and has a good rhytm, almost without filler. What makes this series special is the first-person narration by the protagonist, ironic and funny at the limits of stupidity (the main actor, Jake McDorman is very good and also quite handsome) that often breaks the fourth wall.
The direction style is perfectly suited to the narration with superimposed writings, parts in stop motion, animated and other tricks, such as a slight change of color in the image before and after the pill, which show to the viewer the world as seen by Brian. They are no longer very original methods, but I like this style a lot and in the context of "Limitless" these effects very well made and help to make the show more enjoyable.
Fortunately, the series has a satisfactory ending because it was officially canceled by the CBS. As that I liked it so much on one hand it is a pity, but on the other prevents from ruining a good story (as it happened with Lost).
I would definately recommend "Limitless", for the storytelling and directing quality, for the limited number of episodes and the presence of a conclusion, that make the viewing easier, because it is also suitable for a fairly young audience (there are scenes of sex and violence, but not explicit ones), but above all for the ironic style and its positivity.
