Portugal day 6: Porto

 

La mattina del 30 giugno, siamo partiti per Porto. Prima della partenza abbiamo tentato di restituire la Viva Viagem, in modo da riavere i soldi che avevamo caricato. Sul sito ufficiale c'era scritto che si poteva fare in qualsiasi biglietteria della metro, a patto di aver conservato la ricevuta. Quando abbiamo chiesto ci hanno detto che erano impossibilitati a farlo perché non avevano soldi, per fortuna non ne avevamo caricati tanti.

Avevamo già fatto il biglietto del treno dall'Italia, in modo da approfittare degli sconti che si hanno con una prenotazione anticipata: infatti lo abbiamo pagato circa 18€ contro i più di 30 del biglietto standard.

Il nostro treno era un intercity e noi eravamo in seconda classe. Non era particolarmente bello né brutto, l'unica nota degna di rilievo è che c'era un'aria condizionata fortissima che ha fatto venire un torcicollo spaventoso alla Pelosa Metà nonostante avesse la sciarpa.

Siamo partiti dalla stazione di Santa Apolonia (che è anche una stazione della metropolitana) alle 09:30 e siamo arrivati a Porto, alla stazione di Campanha, alle 12:40 circa, quindi il viaggio è durato circa 3 ore e 10 minuti.

A Campanha abbiamo fatto una carta ricaricabile dei trasporti locali (0,5€, più il biglietto) per prendere un treno per la stazione di Sao Bento, vicina al nostro albergo. A posteriori è stato un errore perché senza saperlo abbiamo fatto la carta dei treni pensando ce ne fosse una sola come a Lisbona, mentre ne esiste un'altra per i mezzi cittadini che abbiamo dovuto fare per andare in aeroporto (non si possono comprare i biglietti sfusi). A posteriori avremmo potuto fare solo quest'ultima visto che Campanha è anche una fermata della metropolitana!

On June 30th morning, we left Lisbon for Porto. Before leaving we tried to return our Viva Viagem cards in order to get back the money we loaded on them. On the official website it was written that they could returned with the receipt at any underground station. When we asked, we were told they were unable to do so because they had no money. Luckily we didn't have a lot of money on our cards.
We already bought our train ticket from Italy, so to take advantage of the discounts you can get with an earlier reservation: in fact we paid about 18€ while the standard ticket costed more than 30€.
Our train was an intercity and we bought second class tickets. It was not particularly good nor bad, the only thing worthy of mention is that there was a strong air-conditioner that caused the Hairy Half a pinful stiff neck despite his scarf.
We left from Santa Apolonia station (which is also an underground station) at 09:30 and arrived at  Campanha Station, in Porto, approximately at 12:40, so the journey took about 3 hours and 10 minutes.
In Campanha we bought a rechargeable local transport card (0.5€ plus the ticket) to get to Sao Bento train station, close to our hotel. In retrospect it was a mistake because we did not know that it was a card ment only for train and we tought that there was only one card for the whole transport system like in Lisbon, while there is another for the other trasnsports, that we had to buy to go to the airport (you can not buy single tickets). With hindsight we could have done only this latter one because Campanha is also an underground stop!

Comunque siamo arrivati senza problemi alla bellissima stazione di Sao Bento, che nella sala anteriore è decorata da enormi pannelli di azulejos progettati da Jorge Colaço nel 1930, che raffigurano battaglie storiche (tra cui la conquista di Ceuta da parte di Enrico il Navigatore) e la storia dei trasporti.

Anyway we arrived safely at the beautiful Sao Bento station, which had a front room is decorated in huge tile panels designed by Jorge Colaço in 1930, which depict historical battles (including the conquest of Ceuta by Henry the Navigator) and the history of transportation.

Siamo andati all'hotel, Residencial Porto Novo, e la nostra stanza a confronto con quella di Lisbona ci è parsa enorme. Abbiamo messo giù i bagagli e, visto che era ora di pranzo, siamo andati a mangiare da Casa Guedes in Praça dos Poveiros 130, un locale famoso per i panini al maiale. Per fortuna nonostante la sua fama c'era poca coda e siamo perfino riusciti a mangiare ad un tavolo all'aperto. Abbiamo preso un paio di crocchette di baccalà come antipasto, due birre scure e io un panino al formaggio e la Pelosa Metà uno con maiale e formaggio. Era tutto luridamente meraviglioso e abbiamo speso solo 5,50€ a testa.

We went to the hotel, Residencial Porto Novo, and our room seemed enormous compared to the one in Lisbon. We left our luggage there, and since it was lunch time, we went to eat at Casa Guedes in Praça dos Poveiros 130, a place famous for its pork sandwiches. Fortunately, despite its fame the queque was short and we even managed to eat at an outdoor table. We took a couple of codfish croquettes as an appetizer, two dark beers and I choose a cheese sandwich and the Hairy Half a pork and cheese one. It was all super fat and yummy and we spent only 5.50€ each.

Dopo mangiato siamo andati in Rua Alfândega 10 per visitare la Casa do Infante, un edificio medievale dove si trovava la zecca. Si dice che sia stato il luogo di nascita di Enrico il Navigatore nel 1394. Oggi ospita una mostra su tre piani dedicata alle attività che si svolgevano nell'edificio, ad alcuni reperti rinvenuti nella casa (compreso un mosaico romano), al commercio portoghese e ad Enrico il Navigatore. A me è piaciuto particolarmente l'edificio, con tutti i rimaneggiamenti di epoche diverse, mentre le mostre non erano interessantissime.

After lunch we went to Rua Alfândega 10 to visit Casa do Infante, a medieval building that used to host the mint. It is said that it was the birthplace of Henry the Navigator in 1394. It now houses exhibitions about the activities that took place in the building, some artefacts found in the house (including a Roman mosaic), the Portuguese trade and Henry the Navigator. I especially liked the building, with all the alterations from different eras, while the exhibits were not so interesting.

Il sito della Lonley Planet consigliava come molto suggestiva l'Igreja do São João Novo, una chiesa medievale costruita nel 1539 su di un terreno che era originariamente parte del vecchio quartiere ebraico di Porto, così ci siamo inerpicati per una serie di strette stradine per visitarla, ma non l'abbiamo trovata niente di che.

The Lonely Planet website told the Igreja de São João Novo, a medieval church built in 1539 on land that was originally part of the old Jewish district of Porto, was very suggestive so we climbed some narrow streets to visit it but we didn't like it so much.

Invece ci è piaciuto moltissimo il Palácio da Bolsa, che si trova in  Rua Ferreira Borges, vicino alla Casa do Infante e proprio di fianco all'Igreja de São Francisco.
Si tratta di un palazzo neoclassico costruito fra il 1842 e il 1910 sul vecchio convento di São Francisco perché fungesse da sede per i mercanti della città. Si può visitare aggregandosi ad una delle visite guidate che partono ogni 30 minuti, disponibili in portoghese, inglese, francese, tedesco e spagnolo. Il palazzo era sfarzosissimo. La sala più bella e ricca era il Salão Árabe (Salone Arabo), una sala da ballo con pareti decorate con motivi moreschi a stucco e ricoperte da quasi 18 kg di oro.  Mi sono piaciute moltissimo anche le lampade in metallo lavorato e la stanza rivestita in legno.

Al piano terra c'era "O Comercial", un ristorante-enoteca.

Mentre visitavamo il palazzo erano in corso i preparativi per ospitare un ballo scolastico e ammetto di essere stata un po' invidiosa.

Instead we loved the Palácio da Bolsa, located in Rua Ferreira Borges, near Casa do Infante and Igreja de São Francisco.
It is a neoclassical building built between 1842 and 1910 on the old convent of São Francisco to serve as headquarters for the merchants of the city. It can be visited by joining one of the guided tours that leave every 30 minutes, available in Portuguese, English, French, German and Spanish. The palace was sumptuos. The most beautiful and rich room was the Salão Árabe (Arabic Lounge), a ballroom, decorated with stucco Moorish motifs and covered with almost 18 kg of gold. I liked very much also the metal lamps and the wood-paneled room.
On the ground floor there was "O Comercial", a winery and restaurant.
While visiting the palace there were preparations to host a prom and I admit I was a bit envious.

Anche l'Igreja de São Francisco era bellissima e ricchissima. Dall'esterno sembrava una sobria chiesa gotica, ma l'interno era completamente decorato in stile barocco e completamente ricoperto da quasi 100 kg d'oro. Oltre a questo c'erano varie statue e dipinti vagamente macabri. Sono rimasta particolarmente affascinata dalla pala d'altare super splatter dedicata ai missionari uccisi in Giappone.
E' veramente un peccato che non si potessero fare fotografie.

Il biglietto includeva anche la visita alla cripta, che invece secondo me era un po' troppo moderna e abbastanza noiosa.

The Igreja de São Francisco was beautiful and rich too. From the outside it looked like a sober Gothic church, but the interior was completely decorated in baroque style and completely covered in almost 100 kg of gold. In addition to this there were various macabre statues and paintings. I was particularly fascinated by the super splatter altarpiece dedicated to the missionaries killed in Japan.
It's really a shame that it was forbidden take pictures.
The ticket also included a visit to the crypt, which instead was a bit too modern and quite boring for my taste.

Siamo scesi dalle scale della chiesa e abbiamo svoltato verso il fiume, passeggiando un po' lungo le sue sponde, fra case colorate, localini e il bellissimo panorama. All'altezza del ponte Dom Luis I abbiamo preso una lunghissima e ripidissima scalinata per ritornare in centro città (due giorni dopo abbiamo scoperto che esisteva una comoda teleferica...), lungo la quale abbiamo trovato una chiesa che nei tempi antichi si trovava vicino ad una prigione. Secondo la leggenda i prigionieri che riuscivano a scappare e toccare la croce dovevano essere liberati.

We descended from the church stairs and we turned towards the river, walking a little along its banks, among colorful houses, cafes, and the beautiful view. Near the Dom Luis I bridge we took a very long and steep staircase to return to the city center (two days later we found out that there was a cable car...), along which we found a church that in ancient times was near to a prison. According to the legend, the prisoners who managed to escape and touch the cross had to be freed.

Visto che era ora di cena ci siamo messi a cercare un ristorante, ma ci sembravano tutti uguali e tutti turistici. Alla fine ci siamo fermati da Baju in  Praça dos Poveiros 60, dove ci siamo divisi due piatti: il riso all'anatra all'antica (che evidentemente vuol dire ricoperto di formaggio) e una francesinha. La francesinha è un piatto tipico della città. Si tratta di un sandwich con carne e affettati, ricoperto di formaggio fuso e di una salsa di pomodoro e birra, accompagnato da patatine. Insomma, una cosina leggera. Al ristorante era in offerta con due birre chiare a 10€. Non era male, ma non ci ha entusiasmato, mentre il riso era molto buono. Ci hanno portato anche un antipasto di crocchette fritte. Io ho preso anche una bevanda frizzante molto dolce al guaranà che mi ha vagamente ricordato la Inca Cola (ma meno stucchevole).

As it was dinner time we started to look for a restaurant, but they all looked the same, and all looked touristic. Eventually we stopped at Baju in Praça dos Poveiros 60, where we split two dishes: old style duck rice (which evidently means covered in cheese) and a francesinha. The francesinha is a typical dish of the city. It is a sandwich with meat and ham, covered with melted cheese and tomato and beer sauce, accompanied by fries. In short, a light dish. The restaurant had an offer and served it with two ales for 10€. It was not bad, but neither completely my taste, while the rice was very good. They also brought us a fried croquettes appetizer. I also took a very sweet guarana fizzy drink that vaguely reminded me of Inca Cola (but less cloying).

Residencial Porto Novo - Alojamento Local

A Porto abbiamo alloggiato due notti al Residencial Porto Novo in Rua Alexandre Herculano, 185. Con lo sconto trovato su Booking.com abbiamo speso 56€ in tutto, ma in genere costa di più.

La stanza era carina e spaziosa e il bagno funzionale. Era tutto pulito anche se non perfettamente (abbiamo trovato una macchietta sulla coperta). In bagno c'erano sapone liquido per le mani e asciugamani (anche se non erano segnalati sul sito), mancavano phon e prodotti per lavarsi corpo e capelli.
Il personale era molto cortese e ci ha tenuto le valigie tutto l'ultimo giorno, ma il guardiano notturno non capiva bene l'inglese. La reception era 24 ore su 24 (una sera però abbiamo dovuto suonare a lungo per farci aprire).

La posizione è ottima perché è 10 minuti a piedi dalla stazione della metropolitana di São Bento, di fronte a una fermata dell'autobus, a 5 minuti dal centro e a 15 circa dalla Capella das Almas (che a sua volta è vicina alla via dello shopping, Rua Santa Catarina.

Il sito indica la presenza di una cucina in comune munita di forno a microonde, frigorifero e posate che noi non abbiamo usato.
In definitiva siamo stati soddisfatti della nostra permanenza, specie ad un prezzo così basso.

In Porto we stayed two nights at Residencial Porto Novo in Rua Alexandre Herculano, 185. With the discount found on Booking.com we spent 56€, but usually it costs more.
The room was nice and spacious and the bathroom functional. Everything was clean though not perfect (we found a stain on the blanket). In the bathroom there were liquid hand soap and towels (although they were not reported on the site), but there were no hair dryer and no products for washing body and hair.
The staff was very kind and kept our bags on the last day, but the night watchman did not understand english well. The reception was 24 hours (one evening, however, we had to ring a long time to make them open).
The location was great because it was a 10-minute walk from São Bento Metro Station, in front of a bus stop, 5 minutes from the center and about 15 from Capella das Almas (which is close to Rua Santa Catarina, the shopping street,.
The site indicates the presence of a shared kitchen equipped with microwave, refrigerator and cutlery that we did not use.
Ultimately we liked the hotel, especially at such a low price.
