A weekend in Turin: sunday

The second day of our trip to Turin we went to Venaria to visit the palace. As we got up late, we arrived in the city around lunch time. After an internet search we decided to eat at Una Volta, in Piazza Cavour 5, close to a beautiful church.
The restaurant is very nice, shabby chic, rustic, yet modern, with a wall painted with chalkboard paint, preserves for sale, wooden decorations, antique accessories and even zen writings in the bathroom.

The service was really slow and we lost too much visiting time. After a long wait we were offered sparkling white wine and a potato salad. Offered in a manner of speaking, since this drink weighed a lot on the total bill. During the weekdays the restaurant has discounted menu, but on weekends we din't find them. The individual dishes had still normal prices, accessible (first courses between 7 and 13€, second courses a bit more expensive), but with the appetizer, first, coffee and service we spent about 20€ each.
Fortunately the food was yummy. This restaurant specializes in homemade food with a modern twist. Me and the Hairy Half split a dish of handmade plin al tovagliolo and one of zabaglione and bacon fusilli (basically a carbonara with a creamier sauce), all really delicious.
Another special feature of the restaurant is the coffee menu, there are many to choose from (though the most interesting ones cost about 2€).

We arrived at Venaria Reale, nearly at 16:00 so there was only about an hour of light left, an hour at the end of the gardens visit time and three hours at the end of the whole complex's visit time. So we decided buy a ticket only for the gardens and the palace and not for the exhibitions and royal stables (you can find all the practical information about times, tickets and visits on the official website: http://www.lavenaria.it/) .

Given that we had only an hour before the closing time, we first visited the gardens. To be honest even if we had more time we probably would not have wandered outdoors longer because it was really cold. The style of the French gardens, which generally I don't like too much because they are too geometric and artificial. In this context, however, were included modern architectures and facilities, some boring and incomprehensible and other very nice as fantacasino, a small building dedicated to games that at that time it was closed. There were also peacocks in cages.
Ultimately I liked the gardens, with the light striking the sunset, a lot, but they probaby would have been even more beautiful in spring and summer, especially the Rose Garden that at the time was completely bare except for three wilted flowers.

The interior of the palace left me with mixed feelings. On the first floor there was a very interesting exhibition about the Savoy house and some installation that wanted to recall the atmosphere of the times of the palace's glory (including a video with Littizzetto, a famous italian comedian), but for my taste they were too modern. For the rest there were a couple of nice places, the ballroom and the chapel with the tromp l'oeil dome. For the rest there were exibitions that tried to reconstruct the 1600-700 environments with furniture and furnishings borrowed from other museums or rebuilt, as Venaria fell into disrepair was sacked after the Napoleonic occupation. There were many paintings including works by Rubens and Van Dyke. Despite this, I was not entirely convinced by this part of the visit, perhaps because the artificiality of the reconstruction was very noticeable.

They kept you waiting, and then charged you for the wine...? That's weird :/

Also, the palace is so gorgeous!! I'd love to go there XD

Yes, I was quite disappointed about it, I hoped it was a way to make up. And if it wasn't why didn't they say the price and all? I think it wasn't so honest.

What will your honeymoon's itinerary be?
