Moonrise Kingdom

"Moonrise Kingdom" is a 2012 U.S.A. film directed by Wes Anderson, who also wrote the screenplay in collaboration with Roman Coppola.
The film is set in 1965 on the imaginary island of New Penzance. The protagonists are the twelve year old Sam Shakusky, camping on the island with the scouts, and his friend Suzy Bishop, who is living on the island with her family. The two run away together, upsetting the balance of the small community, pursued by all the scouts, by a sad policeman, by Suzy lawyer parents and later also by a woman of the social services. Meanwhile a terrible storm arises.
It's a film that manages to be deep and poetic without ever losing its irony. As "Amelie" or "Hugo Cabret", it has a suspended atmosphere reminiscent of a fairy tale, and as "Spivet", it likes to break the fourth wall with often comical effects.
This movie has a lot of great actors (Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray...), but all the characters are very well characterized beyond the excellent acting: each one, even the ones who appear on the screen only for few minutes, is defined by a series of little tics, that often digress in the grotesque, and by a deep humanity. From this point of view the protagonists are particularly significant, starting with the choice of the performers, whose faces are characteristic, but far from the classic beauty of the Hollywood children. In addition, as is normal in real life, but is difficult to see in the cinema, she's taller and has a more mature body than him. But above all, Sam and Suzy have characteristics and attitudes typical of twelve year olds that usually people prefer not to show on the screen, starting from their, albeit naive, sexuality (especially Suzy, with her improbable green eyeshadow, is very sexualized).
The photography is amazing, it's like being in an old photo of the period, with a bit 'too saturated colors and low contrast. The soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat is beautiful too.
In short, "Moonrise Kingdom" is a brilliant film and a must.
