L'albero dei giannizzeri/The Jannissary tree (Jason Goodwin)

"The Jannissary tree" is a 2006 novel by Jason Goodwin, winner of the Edgar Award (which awards mystery stroried) in 2007. It is a mistery that takes place in 1836 in an Istanbul walking on a fine line between tradition and modernity. The protagonist is Yashim Togalu, a middle aged eunuch who is often entrusted by the high court offices to investigate sensitive cases.
The mystery of this novel revolves around the Janissaries, the  most powerful military corps of the Ottoman Empire, bloodily dismantled by the Sultan ten years before the events narrated because they had become a threat to public order. A series of murders of members of the New Guard, the new westernized military corps, suggest a connection with their vanished predecessors. Meanwhile the jewels of the Mother of the Sultan get stolen and one of the girls of the harem is killed... the case becomes even more complicated.
In fact, the plot is rather intricate and switches from a slow start to a fast pace towards the end. I admit that I several times was a bit confused, but I was comforted to read the blunders made by the detective, who is very good but not infallible.
As you might expect from a book of this kind written by a westerner (Goodwin is from UK), the investigation often becomes an excuse to show readers the exotic charm of the habits and customs of the mentioned. places Fortunately, the author knows the subject as a scholar of Byzantine history and because he traveled on foot from Poland to Istanbul.
Although the characters are well built (in particular I appreciated Yashim's passion for cooking) and the plot works, they seemed too built, without that I do not know what that makes them "real." However, being the first novel of the author, it's likely he improved with the various sequels.
To this first book, in fact, followed, again starring Yashim, in 2007 "The Snake Stone", in 2008 "The Bellini Card", in 2011 "An Evil Eye" and in 2014"The Baklava Club".
It is not an excellent book, but it is a light reading which can be nice if you like mystery stories, even more if you plan to go to Istanbul on vacation.
