Did you know that George R. R. Martin, the author of the famous fantasy saga "The Song of Ice and Fire" (which I love), has also written a vampire story set on the boats that sailed the Mississippi River in the 800? Well, now you do.
I had the impression he was influenced by Anne Rice, although I read very little by her. If you like horror or instead put
scary books in the freezer, I'll telle you that there's a a bit of adrenaline and some splatter scenes, but the story isn't really scary.
The characters are perhaps a bit stock ones, and Martin gives hints that would have been interesting to expand, particularly at the end.
Don't expect  a work of the level of the Song, but if you have some free time is a quite good novel even if it takes off only around the middle.
