The secrets of Jin-Shei is novel by Alma Alexander, written in 2004. It settled in the past, in a imaginary land similar to the ancient China (the author studied ancient chinese traditions and religions), a land historically realistic except for che existence of magic.
The point of wiew is a female one as the novel has various protagonists, but all of them are women. The novel follows the interweaving of their destiny and the bound between them and the political history of their land.
The centre and the strong point of the novel is Jin-shei, a pledge given by one woman to another, and that once accepted can never be broken. This declaration of loyalty transcends social class and normal customs. Through jin-ashu, a unique language passed on from generation to generation of women, the lives within the sisterhood continue to intertwine throughout time.
And a similar thing really existed! In ancient China for 500 years was used a secret women's writing, the Nü Shu. It let people who couldn't study to express their thoughts preventing them from the violation of the male look. Unlukily in 2004 the last woman knowing it died :(
There existed also a sisterhood bound called jiebai zhimei. The women bounded by it wrote to each other once separated by their marriages.
The story of this nowel is written really well and it's really catching. But consider that it becomes a bit sad. If it was a film it would fall under the categories of historical, fantasy or dramatic.
