Villa Arconati

Villa Arconati is a villa di delizia, a residence with a garden where the nobility, in this case the Milan one, retired during the summer months to escape the heat and any waves of diseases such as the black plague. It was a widespread architectural genre especially in the 16th century. Villa Arconati was built later, in 1610, transforming Castellazzo, a fortified farmhouse, and evolved through subsequent architectural interventions up to the beginning of the 20th century. Today the prevailing style is baroque.

The garden is fabulous, with a really neat part in front of the façade, with almost surrealistic geometric trees and a back part divided into an area where there are remains of statues and water games and a wilder area where there are ruins, statues wrapped by vegetation, an old greenhouse, a swing. It seems to be in a fairy-tale (maybe one that is a bit creepy).

The villa in itself is considered an Italian version of the Versailles of Louis XIV. On the ground floor there is the Salone del Museo, with the Roman statue of Tiberius (that for long time was believed to depict Pompey), the red room, currently undergoing renovation, the stables and various other rooms where, inter alia, there are drawings on the walls left by a romantic painter.
There are also rooms that aren't often open to the public: the cabinet for the monument of Gaston de Foix, the Library where probably were kept the sheets of the Atlantic Code of Leonardo da Vinci that in 1637 were donated to the Ambrosian Library, a museum archive and a workshop.

The true masterpiece, however, is the noble floor, with magnificent ceilings frescoed in perspective to magnify the spaces, doors that show a succession of salons, a ballroom inspired by the mirror room of Versailles, a reproduction of Laocoonte, a pieno stool shaped as a shellfish and many other wonders. The main one is the salon frescoed by the greatest stage designers of the Ducal Theater of Milan, the Galliari brothers, in 1750.
We paid 5€ to enter the villa and 3 for the guided tour on the noble piano.

When we visited it at the end of September there was the festival "Delizie in villa" a gastronomic and cultural festival.
We tasted one of the cocktails prepared by the bartender Maurizio Andriani, La vie en rose, with French Vermouth, cognac, honey, lime juice, orange juice and rosemary. We also tried a good craft beer. We ate an appetizer of fried bread and cold cuts, a Lord "Sanguis" sandwich with boiled beef and green sauce and the Abruzzo style grilled skewers with oiled bread. I also took a chocolate and berries ice cream. It was all delicious.
I absolutely recommend you to visit the villa, even better during such an event.
